@ Turbo J, ha ha, closely matched, would be good, but I have absolutely a big fat zero in experiance.
Call me paranoid, but also dont want to risk anything on the car by putting it through that sort of stress................................................................................................................................

but ill think about it, laugh

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 15/07/2010 23:21

Taking bets:
Technics 381 bhp & 355lb torque vs
TurboJ 374bhp & 400lb torque

Technics 11/8
TurboJ 8/11

TurboJ odds on with more torque and a little lighter still should be mighty close!!

Ladies & Gents place your bets laugh

When we get to 25 we will set a date yer?

So 3 more people please!!

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 17/07/2010 11:11

how about taking a deposit? might persuade people to turn up if they've shelled out rolleyes

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 17/07/2010 11:18

Whatever date you set it would need to be expendable because if the weather is poor I won't bother.

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 17/07/2010 11:52

Just had a look,.,

There are 2 main dates...

24th or 31st

I think 24th is a better day but it's up to every one... Can a mod put a poll up with them dates please??
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 17/07/2010 13:34

depending on whether im working or not I will come for a blast.
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 17/07/2010 16:44

Dates don't bother me as I am very flexible. It’s just the weather, I know you can't controller that so if we set the date for the 24th and if it's called off then the 31st can be the backup date?
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 17/07/2010 17:07

Why not make it the 24th, then if weather permits then great. If the weather is looking bad then postpone it till the week later? Its a long way for some people to travel for a rain off. (including me laugh )

hope we better the number from last time!!

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 17/07/2010 22:13

Ok so Sunday October 24th just to confirm ?

No need for deposits at the pod (unless Proccy is trying to get a whip round for a new jumper tongue ) - it's just a case of turn up, sign on - and run. cool

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 29/07/2010 14:52

i sent him a pm... but i didnt hear back from him... he is a busy man...

im seeing a GOOD shoot out..

if we can get Flea, mavric, Barbz and the other STUPIDLY high BHP cars to try to beat the 11 second 1/4 mile times, i will willing pay out of my own pocket to get 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies made! lol

cheesy but could be funny to get a trophie for all there hard work and mega money spent on there car!
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 29/07/2010 15:08

Is Flea really having a crack at sub 11 secs? that is going to take a lot of doing!
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 29/07/2010 15:10

who knows, but i DO know Barbz is looking to cfrak the fastest coupe 1/4 mile time!
Posted By: Cyclone

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 29/07/2010 19:58

What is the fastest Coupe 1/4 mile time?

Is it still Mavric and Flea at 11.9? If so then sub 11 I doubt will be on the cards, but mid 11s could be possible with 520+bhp.

Jules

ps I may come along and join in.

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 03/08/2010 15:15

5 years ago, when I went in my Evo with a few Coops, Fishy Dave was kind enough along with SaabSi (I think) to prepare some small cards to put in our windows, They were sticky backed and had the FCCUk logo and power ranges printed, eg -

220-250bhp 250-270bhp 290-320bhp 350bhp +

Good idea if someones in the know how!

Il have 290-320 please! we could all cover the materials, £1 each??

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 23/08/2010 23:32

Marco if you’re organising this can you find out of if it’s ok for me to bring a RR. I was going to bring my mates Dyno Dymanics rollers so we can do power runs at a nice price on the day say £35 a car. All I would need is a 240V plug for the computer/fans and permission from the pod (maybe they will charge a fee also). He has all the required paperwork i.e liberty insurance etc as he travels all over the country hosting RR days for clubs etc. Would be good to see all the high power coupes together on the rollers and ¼ times at the pod on the same day so no excuses laugh

Right guys and gals...

i have spoken to Chris at santa pod and its looking good!

ive enquired into bringing J's RR and waiting to hear back from that.

i believe it will be for coupe owners only. (If we are allowed to bring it...)

also, im going to pay out of my own pocket for a patch to keep all the coupes in one area..

if no one turns up and i waste my money... i will not be happy!

any more people coming to what should be a great day!!!!

You can put all the names on pm as you did for the original pm.

Also do we all book individually or pay on the day?

In true Fccuk style if theres 23 on the list, then youll be lucky if 10 show up.

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 25/08/2010 13:44

quite easy really

copy those names into notepad or word

then one by one copy and paste them into the PM...

are there any tyre changing facilities there as i'm thinking if i'm going do the 'POD' i may aswell have a proper go and get some slicks/track tyres!
if not does anyone wanna go halves on a shite set of wheels from joe at country cruising... Obviously we'll only need 2 each for the fronts... Obviously still have to source the tyres though!

you can get some cheap alloys off joe...

what would be the best slicks to run? i was also thinking to use a second set of alloys!

ive heard back from Santa pod...

Dear Marco,

I have heard back from our trade and RWYB managers and we can offer:

You a reserved club space at the top end of the fire up road, near the pod shop or down from the pod shop closer to the grandstand for £30+VAT.
A reserved space for the Rolling Road and power by the pod shop for £100+VAT. He is then free to sell his services on the day.

Please let me know if this is ok and what location you’d like to club to be in?

Many thanks,
Chris

im going to pay for the pitch so thats sorted...

If I had two definate buyers I'd split em

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 27/08/2010 23:21

We should make this an annual event "The British Coupe Showdown" hehe

Can I make a suggestion?

We split things into classes to make things fair?

Depending on numbers we may be able to have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in most classes.

Class 1. Std internals T28 style turbo, including hybrids.

Class 2. Std internals but GT28R/RS/RSR

Class 3. std internals large unrestricted turbo GT2871/30's etc

Class 4. Full forged unrestricted

Class 5. 16vt T3 journal bearing based turbo

Class 6. 16vt full forged unrestricted.

Class 7. Naturally Aspirated

Class 8. Anything goes, 20vt/16vt, nitrous, sprint cars, twin engined, 4wd etc

Class 1-7 Road legal tyres only, Class 8 anything goes wrinkle walls etc..

I think this would make things really interesting and add a little bit of fun to the proceedings.
Its up to the owner to enter the car in the correct class and any cheating is pointless and anyone found to be entering in the wrong class will not be included in any results.

At the end of the day we meet up and go through the classes to see who has the best times, timing slip being evidence there of.

I'll start..

Davie Class 1.

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 27/08/2010 23:50

Good idea won't ever happen like that. People are just going to race and the quick times are the quick times.
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 28/08/2010 00:02

Why wont it happen?

Adds more fun and a bit of genuine competition IMO

If people dont then they must be boring buggers.
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 28/08/2010 00:37

not enough people for that many classes.

could make it much simpler:

class 1: T28 (standard or hybrid)
Class 2: GT28 not forged (R/RS/RSR)
Class 3: Forged with whatever you have

OR

Class 1: Sub 300bhp
Class 2: 300 - 400bhp
Class 3: 400+bhp

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 28/08/2010 14:24

Power category would be far better, You can just pair up against who you like then, We will take note of times etc..

To be fair I think Marco is printing some stickers for the car windows, 200-220 220-250 250-280bhp etc etc

Im in a Seat so the whole turbo setups not relivant to myself..

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 28/08/2010 23:38

No need to make things so complicated imo. Why not just turn up and race and analyse afterwards?
Posted By: coupedummy

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 29/08/2010 00:23

exactly, post results.add your spec to your times later.Doesnt matter who races who as its all timed
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 29/08/2010 02:00

Tbh people I think it's easier to just run and aim for the best times. That way you can say my coupe did xyz time & what ever bhp. Simple.

I will put up a spec vs time sheet after the event.

Like...

Forged 20vt with 300bh @13.2 ect.
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 29/08/2010 02:03

And yes I will look at getting every ones bhp figures before hand so people can see what a certain BHP coupe can do on the strip!

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 01/09/2010 11:07

This sounds like an awsome event/day to me and being fairly local i'm a definate for sure.

Put me down as Racing - Confirmed.

I'll also see who else I can get to come along.

Marco, not to hit on the "you never turn up" line but considering your organising this, your not down as confirmed on the list!!! are you hiding something lol.

Also, i've just read the last 187 posts on this thread and don't recall seeing a price for the day, I assume it will be about £20 to enter santa pod and then £30 to race or something???

Can you confirm?

Also, add me to the PM thats been going about please mate.

If I find an 2.75" exhaust and get the flea map done by then, then I will also be up for the RR.

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 27/09/2010 17:15

Regrettably im now 50-50 on this as its my good friends birthday the day before and we are out on a large one in Brighton.
So it all depends how hungover I am the next day and weather im in a state to drive.
Worse case scenario, ill see if my girlfriend wants to drive in her Alfa.

Fingers crossed as it sounds like its going to be brilliant!

i am considering putting a 3076 on just for this but although i already own the turbo i will have to have the car mapped with it and then its going to have to be done again when they finnish making my turbo in the us and send it over so financially it would be silly but i have been looking forward to this..i cant really think of a viable solution

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 01/10/2010 20:26

Marco... me, ollie and bob are coming in our coupe's still. just to let you know bob's not running down the strip as still runniing his engine in!
If my turbo's been sent off to be refurbed I will run try to beat my 13.6 but its smoking at the min and I have not bothered yet!
Ollie will be running his but he said 'its not a big gun yet' as only std turbo with fmic, blueflame etc ready for hybrid or roller bearing!
Just an update as I know a few are dropping out as usual.

just want to make people aware of this...

if its raning..

im simpley not wating my time paying for a pitch and going to the pod to be cold wet and waiting for the track to open.

i can handle it being just cold!!

if its forcasted to rain this is a no go!!!

but i think it will needed to be played by ear the night before!!!

every one ok with that?

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 11/10/2010 09:12

If the weather allows us to run, I'll be there. If there's more than a 50% chance of rain, I probably won't bother with the 200-mile round trip to stand around in the rain looking under Coupe bonnets

So - I'm a definite if its dry

@ Eldinho - Off topic, did you break the whole of your car? A brave choice, Did you recover more money than you could have got in selling working??

I see it as such a DARING option, I could never do it myself..

Chrissy..

Its still getting broke. But it looks like it will be getting put back on the road which makes it easier.

I will be making over £8k once finished.

why not in a coupe?

Not had a Coupe since 2003 but still like to keep in touch with the forum and often ponder over buying one again. The old Audi is an ugly old barge but it goes quite well and as nearly all my cars end up being 1/4 miled or VMaxed then it is a good opportunity to see what it will do. I am predicting a 13.9 1/4...

I'm wavering....

My radiator split on the way home last night - I lost about two litres of coolant before I spotted it - its currently got Radweld in it which appears to be holding but its Monday before I can get it fixed

If its dry, I'll be there and I'll take a view on whether or not to run on the day

What time do you think would be wise to meet there at aswell?

If you're coming from Weybridge, it will be the roundabout where you can go left for Addlestone, right for Chertsey or straight across to the M25 / St Peter's, the layby is on the left before the M25 flyover. Not sure on what time, say 7:30am? Then it should only take 90mins to get to Santa Pod and running doesn't start till 9:30am

Changed the wishbone today and a bolt was missing (could have ended in a disaster as the wishbone was very loose) then took it to be tracked. A seized on track rod end. Negative 2.6 degree on one side and positive 1 degree on the other. lol. Now I'm ready laugh

Can my mate come along with his blade? not sure if bikes can also run?
Can we break up the line of coupes with my integrale and my mates blade or have we got to find our own parking? I don't mind parking at the end of the line :-)

Have you guys all registered? I have ;-)

if we are still at the pitch next to the grand stand then santa pod website has a site map that is well marked and so the grand stand is in through the gates round the back of the strip and you should see the grand stand on the other side and i think you drive round the back of it and should be somewhere close!

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 23/10/2010 21:29

Yup - I took my sub out rolleyes

Its going to be too cold for posting really good times - I reckon I'll be lucky to see less than 13 seconds, so I simply decided not to bother stripping it out - I'll still be running with a spare tyre and jack

My only concession to posting a semi-decent time will be to drop the tyre pressures

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 23/10/2010 21:37

Well, Since this has been arranged, Ive been looking forward to a possible 13 sec,

But on a few tests my cars been doing the elastic throw through the gears indicating my clutch is worn..

Il not be warming my tyres, and if its this cold il be lucky for a mid 14..

We shall see,

Cant wait to see some action.

Right just waiting for the AA to pick me up!! Not sure how everyones day went but mine went from bad to worse. I was planning to get here early morning at 9 which I did and have a couple of runs and leave by 12 which I didn't. Instead we waited till 12 to start running then once I finally got to the start line to sent off the inevitable happened. Launch.... Bang.... Gearbox.... Great now only 60 miles from home and waiting for the AA, didn't see one run didn't get to do one run and waisted a shed load of cash for nothing :-(

Posted By: Nigel

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 24/10/2010 17:25

Same here - waited three hours for the track to be dried - queued up, did a bit of a burnout and when I dumped the clutch, there was a big clunk and I lost 95% of drive

I think I've done the same as TurboNick and smashed the diff - I limped it back to the paddock area - SennyDave checked the drive shafts - both there

Got it towed out of Santa Pod (cheers Moosey) and recovered - just got home five minutes ago

The initial diagnosis of a broken clutch coverplate is looking far less likely now, as I'm leaking TWO different colours of oil - red AND black

Looks like I've broken the diff casing at the very least - I'm hoping the the black oil is just gearbox oil that's run through the bellhousing and got mucky - if its engine oil, I'm in LOTS of trouble

JBT - If you're reading this, I'll almost certainly be taking you up on the offer of a gearbox casing - I'll let you know ASAP

TBH, the pain of the failure was nothing compared with the tone of voice of Wifey when I told her..... Things are a touch frosty here...

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 24/10/2010 18:21

Glad to know your back now, Nigel. I think everyone who bombs down that strip deserves some credit (I think the bikers who reach 170+ going down that slippy strip deserve a medal!). A Citroen Saxo vs a Beast of a Chevy Chevelle(I think it was) was surreal!

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 24/10/2010 18:43

Hi All,
Sorry to hear about the problems guys, hope you both manage to get things sorted with limited costs.

Good to meet a few people at Pod but have to say my day was a wash out.. £50 worth of fuel interior sat in the garage and never even got a chance to do one bloody run. Sat at position 20 for 3 bloody hours and then had to go before I had a chance to run. Thought I'd at least get a couple of runs in after arriving at 9..

On the plus side I found a iphone near the burger van and rang the girls mum, sounds like they thought it was a gonner so done my good deed for the day.

Any decent times?

Did any coops run today?

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 24/10/2010 19:16

I don't think the track was that bad, damp at worst but it was so chugging cold that it took ages to dry

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 24/10/2010 19:18

Lets be honest with the money they take on the day they really should either have some sort of cover or start to dry out the track from 7 not start drying it at 9! I was pretty pissed off to say the least.

Shame 2 of the big boys above couldnt get a few runs in.....

But a good dayout.

P.s spoke to the guy with the white skyline with slicks on the rear, cant remember what time it got, but was bloody fast, showed me a power graph........915bhp! shocked

Glad to put some names to faces (finally)

I din't bother stripping out anything.

Bit annoyed at the queue and waiting for 3 hours to run.
Did a 13.5. The second one I messed up the launch and Couldn't be bothered to wait so just chilled for the rest of the day.

Bad luck for Nick & Nigel.

Give me a ring tomorrow. Its not going anywhere.

I did a 19.3 with a stuck clutch
a 14.3 with no excuses
a 14.7
and a 13.2
very dissapointed that in 8 hours i only got 4 runs.Didnt get used to the car at all.
But for its first 1/4 mile it held up well.

What time was your first run?

Whats a stuck clutch?

Paul

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 24/10/2010 19:53

Basically the paddle sticks and doesnt allow it to release.
SO the pedal stuck to the floor for about 8 seconds then a loud bang then it returned.

Managed to wedge a tool kit under the pedal to stop the travel so much.Worked well.
First run was 14's with launch control.Got the 13 without it

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 24/10/2010 20:29

I didn't arrive until 13:30 having been to my son's footy match first, then all they wanted to do was eat lunvh and I couldn't sign on until 14:30, joined the queue and first run was at 16:38, which was 14.25 at 103mph, then joined the back of the queue for a second run not long before they closed the queue. For some reason they only ran one lane and took twice as long to get through everyone, but I was very pleased with my second run, 13.98 at 106 cool But having arrived late and spent all afternoon in the queue I didn't get to chat to anyone other that Elder81 and SteveG. Kids had the camera most of the day, I'll see if there's any good pics. Saw TurboNick being pushed out when we arrived, then saw him on the AA flat bed on the way home.

So a good day for me, I was in two minds about running since the AVC-R is overboosting to 1.5 kg/cm2, but I did it anyway... laugh

I felt sorry for paul in his lancia getting to pod early and not getting to run because he had to leave at 12.00. They litrally took the absolute piss all day with the track iv never seen it like that before! They took AGES drying a dry track in the sun untill 12.30 then a few cars broke slight delays nothing major untill that LOUD drag car got fibre glass all over the track for another long delay, then it got going again finally and they go and close one lane for no apparant reason! Still enjoyed the day! Some nice coupes loved the moony with the azevs and was gutted the 2 biggest power coupes didn't get off the lights! A scudaria F430 only ran a 13.0 so coupes can all be proud of there times!

feel gutted for the two coupes, hope all goes well with them,

some stunning cars also, love the azevs on coops will definitely be looking for some in the near future.

unfortunatly the track did claim a few victims today, i do blame pod as the length of time that place has been going and they should know how to prep and dry the track properly,
they just couldnt seen to get it right today, however some great runs and good show hat off to the bikers that takes some balls!

would love to ride shotgun in that tigra that was stupid quick jjust bouncing off the line. and best burnouts!

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 24/10/2010 21:42

Right the [cloud9] AA take the piss!!! I will be on the phone to their complaints department tomorrow as one flat bed picks me up at 6 then drops me off at services and I had to wait for another one to come. I got home about 9 proper S**t day for me.

That track was way too grippy!!! don’t think having yokohama A048's on a track like that helped! also i think its ridiculous that santa pod like to charge for a full days track service but only supply you with half the day and then half the track!

Daveg i put my thumbs up when you put your hazards on i was ready to race you with the AA truck lol also speaking to the AA guys and they do come into santa pod to pick up cars! (for future reference) so i could have stayed and watched but we thought the car had to be off their premises.

JBT for the record mines an early 5 speed box the supposedly stronger box didn’t seem to strong on that line though lol

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 24/10/2010 22:08

That's really crap service from the AA - I called Green Flag at 3:00 and was picked up at 3:40 - driver took me the whole 100 miles home - was home for 5:30

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 24/10/2010 22:09

well you two wern't the only ones with problems today.

after running last all morning sorting the kids out etc, we finally got to Santa Pod where we were confronted by the LONG LONG que.

We decided to grab a seat and wait for the racing to start.

Bloody Cold.

The day goes on, usual Santa Pod crap of shutting lanes and pointless closures. personally i was getting anoyed with the bikes going down the strip with such a long que of cars.

Anyway, after a few hours and it seemed all was going well(ish) i decided to go and sign on.
"we are not taking any more cars as the que is so long"
Fair play, could of just taken my money.
she said "come back later as it will be quieter with less cars racing"
so i did, but in this time, the strip had been closed yet again so the que was no smaller.
needless to say they wouldn't sign me on.

being cold and fed up and 4pm I decided wnough was enough and we headed back for the car.

We literally get 10 mins down the raod to the A45 and bang bang bang bang bang bang bang.

frown

I pull into a petrol station and USA diner, I have one look in the engine bay and decide to call the RAC.

RAC roadside fix solution shown below:

toe'd it home frown

likely cause, RAC man says it likely to be the cam followers broken!!!!

When I have the heart to look at it one night after work this week i will let you know.

Got home at 9pm! and not very happy grr

SANTAPOD SAFETY.

They close the track for hours collectivly, Due to minor things,

However there are total dicks drifting @ the drifting school, zero control, with no safety barriers right where peoples cars are parked! it would take a minor over-cook and they would barrel into parked cars...

Priorities!

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 25/10/2010 12:27

Hmmm - not looking very good frown

When Paul put it up on the ramps, he immediately started fishing bits of aluminium casting out of the bellhousing

I've definitely broken something - we reckon the diff has punched through the casting into the bellhousing and locked up against the flywheel of the clutch

I also think that the tow out of Santa Pod has killed the viscodrive, as there was a pop, lots of smoke and black oil on the floor (to join the gearbox oil that was already leaking out)

Not one of my cheaper days out...

£25 petrol
£10 entry fee
£25 signing on fee
Amount of competitive time on track - about half a second rolleyes

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 25/10/2010 12:37

doesn't look like it, but until the box is off, we can't be sure. However, its coming from the viscodrive area, so at least there's SOME hope...
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 25/10/2010 12:48

cry Real sorry to hear this Nigel, I should have stopped when I felt the towing load increase a little, at the time I just put it down to maybe surface/ gradient.

I think it might be worthwhile at these events to have, as a group, a comperhensive tool kit to hand for better diagnosis at the track.

cry cry

i had a full tool kit in my boot!!

i never leave the house with out it!

Nigel, again, im sorry mate, kind wished i never organised this event.

when will paul have the box off?

sounds like you have done what i did to my gear box.

still massively gutting.
Posted By: Nigel

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 25/10/2010 14:41

Moosey / Marco - don't worry about it - I attend these events knowing full well that I could break something

TBH, I've been spectacularly lucky so far - I've probably done a dozen or more Santa Pod days and six TOTB events and never had to go home on a recovery truck. Simply going by the law of averages meant that I had to break something sooner or later. Dumping double the power through a gearbox was always going to have some negative effects eventually. However, I still say the track was too grippy - Specky's 10.04-second run would go some way to supporting this view

The box is already off - I'd destroyed the diff, the diff casing and the bellhousing, as well as cooking the viscodrive when we towed it out. The Viscodrive is an easy replacement, so I'm not really bothered about that. I'm hoping that I've sourced the diff and casings from JBT, so I just need Matthew to go and collect them for me - car should be back on the road later this week, depending on Paul's workload

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 25/10/2010 22:17

Like most have already said it was a bitterly disappointing day!! I along with a few others was there around 9ish and was number 6 in the queue, therefore with it not looking too busy I was hoping to get a few runs in early on, however on first viewing the strip I was shocked at how wet it was and just knew that it was going to be a good couple of hours waiting.....

First run was a 14.01 at 100mph which I was quite pleased with, however it was nearly 90 mins before I was back at the front of the queue and when I finally lined up they closed the other lane so it was a boring solo run!! I switched ESP off and dialed a few more revs in than before but got a crap start that ended with a dis heartening 14.2....I have to agree that it felt especially sticky and hence I could have dialled in more revs to get a better launch. When I went back round to queue up again the queue was right back up to past the Drifting section, they'd just started letting the bikes go again so I called it a day (2.30pm!!).

I suppose I should be happy that I got 2 runs in but unfortunately it was just one of those days at the Pod, some days you can get 20 runs, other times 1 or 2. I've said for years that when it's been raining that the Staff should have a stand by crew who come in early to clear the track for a 9.30am start, but it will never happen.

No real highlights unfortunately as I didn't really get a chance to see much racing as I spent most of the time queuing. There were some nice Coupes there and the best action I saw wasn't at the Pod it was on the M1 slip road (J15) and down past the closed Shell station, may have been Technics and Tolga?

Sorry to read about people's woes, this may sound harsh but you have to have Nigel's attitude when it comes drag racing etc, at the end of the day it's a Coupe and there is always going to be a weak spot that gets exposed. When I used to drag my Cerb I was constantly paranoid that something was going to go bang, but fortunately it never did.

I was in the old light green A6 barge.....

The forged green 20vt is mine, thanks for the opinion on the wheels. I refurbed them and thought i'd give some chrome paint a try, obviously to poor effect. I thought 3 of the 4 looked decent but the front passenger one blistered for some reason, i'll have another go at that one.

did any one see a time for the 106 turbo supposidley 450bhp i did see 2in the que with impressive engines and big turbos but no evidence of a 450bhp run frown

to be honset do think the small hatchbacks really stood out setting consistant good times although found them least reliable with one close to the end coating the track in gearbox oil,

also any one notice the mk1 audi tt on 19's with mk2 electronic spoiler, and an array of bonnet vents the car was stunning though and did speak to the guy, also quite smug but he was pushing 590bhp with 50 shot of nos and still running with standard box!! crazy hi-lift cams that wer bouncing about under the rocker and he didnt set a time once limpning over the line both times, not sure if it was that box or his super deep pockets didnt buy him any expertees with his mods, that car could set a great time with the right set up.

No that was owned by some company who tunes these. They broke a driveshaft early on.
Then they had a decent run and put in a 17.2 run.420bhp at the wheels my ars3
The black 106 next to me a few times has one of our company logos on it and hes running 200bhp and was putting in times similar to mine of in the 13's

Suppose i best say some stuff now. I enjoyed the day albeit was extremely cold! The convoy up with techincs was fairly chilled out until Tolga joined the party in the M1 50mph road works, after that they were gone and i didn't see them until i got to Santa Pod, that will teach you for hooning off and missing Junc 14 turn off wink

As everyone has said, the course was extremely sticky, you could hear when the guys were walking about it the squelching / sticky noise coming from their feet and watching the amount of axle tramp all the car were getting, it doesn't surprise me some went bang, which was 2 coupes, 1 corsa, 1 pug 106, 1 mk2 fiesta (with added punching of the steering wheel).

Cyclone, so that who the Audi A6 was, was quality to watch, just no noise and no fuss smile I have got 27 odd video's off the phone, but it seems due to the nature of HTC when filming in HD it has the odd pause through the video. Only 1 i've uploaded so far and that was JBT vs Tolga

It was a good day to meet up with some regular posters on here and actually to get to put a face to a forum name smile

I have to be honest, I love to see the quick coops, And I love speed,

I have been to the pod anually for the last 5 years, This is my last visit, the quing, the cold, the waiting etc etc, its just too much, Plus the 340mile round trip!

Im thinking I would enjoy a track day far more, More driving time and more skill generally and less breakages, Id be going up with a few other mates to make it competitive..

Possibly Castle combe in the spring, If anyone fancies a meet with more drivong involved - I shall do a thread in due course,

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 26/10/2010 11:32

In response to Chrissys post, track days are definately much more fun. Although they do cost a lot more. You've got to take into account brakes and tyres. They only last a few trackdays at best. And then the fuel. I normally go through a tank of fuel at a trackday without the travelling.

But it is definately worth it and I think people worry too much that they will crash there car or break something on a track day. Go out and enjoy your cars!

Yes that was me, one of my less glamourous cars I've ran at SP but with the intent to upset a few of the nicer and supposedly faster cars there, however due to issues at SP didn't really do this justice. It runs well though and it basically has the B5 S4 engine with just with narrower bore downpipes and as standard a lower state of tune. All I've had done is to have the pre-cats gutted and a remap via MRC, so it's probably knocking on the door of 310-320bhp, which given that it's a heavier beast than the old S4 and auto is probably good for a 13.8 quarter which feels about right. These can be picked up for well under £3k and come with lots of extra's and make a comfortable mile munching cruiser.

Mine is a lightish green A6 and pulled off by mistake at the closed Shell stn just after the M1 turn off. It's about 5-10 miles from the Pod so possibly not the same one.

Yes you were, it was from a set of lights, think you were tucked in behind him and I was up ahead, I pulled off at the shell stn but think you went straight on, Tolga may have slowed down to turn off also but realised it was shut and carried on I think.

The only video was of me with no gears laugh .
Managed a 27 second 1/4 on that one with only a first gear launch.

Doh.Need to sort these paddle clutch issues before next time as the tool kit i wedged under the pedal isnt coping well.

When i was at crail a couple of months back i was having a slight issue with the clutch pedel sticking to the floor on a couple of runs JBT what causes this?

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 26/10/2010 14:41

you may need to bleed the slave cyclinder Or replace the plastic bush's inside the gearbox.

i had the same problem.

Basically the design of the paddle means that on the standard slave it over stretches the throw. They always stick at high revs.
Notice in my drag there the launch was good but then the change to second meant the clutch didnt return and didnt until nearly the end of the strip.

The only easy fix is to put a restrictor under the clutch pedal.
They work fine until about 2 inches from the floor. Then they stick everytime under hard launches.

I drove your car a few times and it happened on me once when driving it hard.Had a few complaints since as well about the paddles.Working on an easy fix so wont be long.

es the 1/4 miles are extremely hard on the cars transmission and drive train.
Track days are alot of fun,but 1/4's can be if your not queueing for 2 hours for a 14 second run.

Drag strips break clutches, drivetrains and gearboxes, but track days break engines, a slight problem that would not matter on the road or even the drag strip can turn fatal on track!

I did see one run where he got a fantastic launch, dunno if that was the 12.4 or not but that would go a long way towards it.

I think the latter, certainly the best launch I've ever seen a Coupe do.

At boostmecoopup, lol.

I agree with the launch, it just must of been perfect. Don't think he has some secret spec under the bonnet, I had a blast with him on the way up and I was slightly quicker, only slightly.

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 27/10/2010 09:28

Slightly quicker Technics? You were both sporting 18's, and you have circa 70/80bhp more..

I really think Tolga would be 350bhp 1) to be close to your performance when toying, 2) Nigel is a superb driver track & Drag and at best with 300bhp did a 13.376..

So to get a 12.4 with 300bhp should be totally impossible with a car weighing 1300kgs and FWD.

Unless the rediculously sticky track was helping everyones times..

A 300bhp coop should with an immense launch get mid 13's IMO..

I wish Tolga would speak up a bit and share some tech specs..

Chrissy

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 27/10/2010 09:37

My best time with 300bhp was a 13.376

My best ever time was with over 400bhp, a modestly stripped-out car and a very sticky track - posted a 12.38 - this was with a 2.01 sixty foot time (good for FWD) and about 115mph terminal

As I've said above, the track was over-glued, which might go some way to explaining a 12.4, but I reckon tolga's sixty foot time would need to be in the region of 1.6 - 1.7 to post a 12.4 terminal - not impossible with huge grip and a good driver who knows the car's characteristics

OH - BTW - Paul has said that he's never seen a differential that's been so comprehensively destroyed - apparently, the planet gears are wrecked (teeth stripped off), which then caused the rest of the damage inside the casing

I'll see if I can get hold of the bits and take some photos when I pick the car up

Someone please get a vid up of this.
also tolga can you tell us your 60ft/teminal

Mine's 304bhp and only ran 13.6 with a v good launch back in feb and if nigel's best is 13.3 with that kinda power + the coupe with noz and green wheels (STEVE G) ran a 14.3 best without the spray at 300 bhp
knocking seconds off those times is a lot over a 1/4 mile wow
and Technic's car is way over 300 and they were apparantly toe to toe down the err cough M1

maybe his coupe has Herbie's ecu

I missed his 12.4 run getting another tea

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 28/10/2010 11:35

Santa Pod does quite regularly chuck out 'rogue' times , some sort of fault with the timing system. There is no way a 300 bhp coupe got 12.4 secs with a fluffed change in the mix. The 60 ft time and terminal will be telling.
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 28/10/2010 11:46

I thought this. I would like to see the times and terminal.

I managed a 12.6 with 430bhp and partly stripped out and some semi slicks on the front. There was a few more tenths in the car I think as I had a slight misfire in 4th and launch wasn't perfect but 12.3 at best I think.

300bhp with a passenger at 12.4 would be a small miracle sticky track or not IMO.
Posted By: chrissy

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 28/10/2010 15:14

I agree, fluff timing gear it could be, everyone seemed to be getting superb times, more than any time ive been to the pod??

Anyone see the green Starlet Turbo with slicks? - That was getting 13's

Then It did a crap run with a pants start, medium pace..... then I was gobsmacked when it crossed at 12.3...

Fishy.

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 28/10/2010 18:33

Its supposed to be uber reliable would be good to see the timing slips... 12.4 before sunday i would have put my life on it not being able to do that with fwd and I still would.
That Sagaris did a 12.9 and the F430 -> SCUDARIA <- did a 13.0
So 12.4 ummmm
Posted By: Cyclone

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 28/10/2010 19:03

For 12.4 you'd need 430-450bhp in a Coupe, I only had 410bhp in my Cerb (weighs 100kg+ less than a Coupe) when it did a 11.9 and that was with a 1.9 60ft.

I've seen a Coupe with approx 330-340bhp do a 13.0 - Dan20vt (never seen a coupe launched so consistently well), so unless Tolga was running a 100 shot of nitrous on top of a 330-350bhp engine then maybe the timing was wrong, but again this is pretty rare at SP.

Jules.

Think it was a T350 and not Sagaris so he did quite well and got a decent launch. The F430 crawled off the line hence his time.

There's nothing that Barbz could do that would have prevented my failure - the diff planet gears simply fell apart

IIRC, Barbz's mods include a strengthening plate to prevent the gearbox & diff casings failing and also some extra support for the 6th gear
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 29/10/2010 10:20

On the integrale gearboxes which are much the same inside as far as I'm aware, these are the mods I know of:

Steel Strengthening plate around the bell housing where it meets the engine.
Steel strengthening plates inside the gearbox that keep the bearings from moving apart from each other
3rd gear cog is pinned to the shaft to stop it slipping around the shaft.

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 30/10/2010 19:23

I have a video of your 13.2 John which does prove that wheelspin is better than bogging down!

Santa Pod is invariably a painful exercise in trying to have fun. Quite simply there is no elation to be found in waiting for the track to open, or queueing, or seeing the bikes go round and round, or f***ing up the launch, or f***ing up the gear change, or breaking your car... or indeed the food. The masochist within must revel in the relentless dissapointment that is Santa Pod and it's most precious asset "Unobtanium". Oh but for the rarified exultation where all the planets align, the sun does not set in the west but the east, and Beelzebub announces he has revoked the simple fly in favour of it's far prettier cousin ... then, just maybe, for the most fleeting parsec you will have your hallelujah!

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 30/10/2010 21:13

That's why the smart people go to Shakespeare County Raceway, in my opinion the best 1/4 venue and not quite so full of chavish folk.

I don't believe Tolgas car is only 300hp, a 12.2 is as quick as a GT3RS. Either he has nitrous and a light car or his engine is a much higher spec than announced.

And I think Flea's 11.9 record is amazing but by now really should have been bettered, why aren't people raising the bar on here?

First launch was ace but as the track heated up alot of people bogged.Which was bloody annoying after waiting 2 hours at a time for a failed 1/4.

Im sorry but York is w-a-n-k, its very poor considering how much money you pay(more than most)the track isnt great and being up here in the North suffers from poor weather regularly raining things off.

Shakespeare County Raceway in Stratford Upon Avon is the best 1/4 mile venue in the UK by far, IMO of course.

Someone else said that was good.

Anyways a bit of H2O seperates the men from the boys.
That is if they let you run.

The best 1/4 mile i did was Jimbo's runway day.

Shakespeare County has alot of "old boys" helping run it, and I have it on record from a very good source as being THE track to use.

I live closest to York than any other venue and I would happily endure the longer drive and expense to go to Shakespeare County. Good camping venue too, bbq's and light topping of beers makes for a great weekend, weather is normally very good too.

I was involved in alot of classic mini drag racing at Shakespeare County( dont laugh, there's 1.3 litre turbo mini's that'll do an 11.1 1/4!!) and loved the weekends there.

Jimbo's 1/4 mile & top speed run day was excellent - good memories.

Shakespeare County Raceway sounds promising, pretty close to me so I am happy to go down and have a gander.

i had a flick throw of this and i dont think i could see peoples bhp and torque figures with there times. I just wanted to see so i could kind of get a ruff idea of what i would get.

ive got 330 bhp and 306 ft/lbs

so is there anyone near them figures that ran ?

Sorry mate only maybe 20% of people on this site have the balls to use their cars, and the ones that went didn't bother posting times or anything. I tried making it a little competitive but alas too many people scared of hurting their cars. I was dissapointed by the poor reaction to a bit of competition tbh.

bit harsh there mate,
not everyone can afford to take the chance of breaking their car, so subjecting to the huge stress of 1/4 mile times isn't for everyone.
Per example, my car is my daily driver, I NEED the car for work, or it costs me over a £100 a week just for transport, then the repair bill on top of that. If I was to seriously damage the car I'd be screwed.

Not sure about the 20% figure, but I partly agree with the comment. However, to chastise owners for not running their car up the dragstrip is rather harsh. There are many stories of blown engines and gearboxes, and an awful lot of them happen on the dragstrip, so people are naturally reticent to take the risk of having to walk to work on Monday after they have killed their car on Sunday

I'm living proof of this - £20 to get in, £25 to sign on, several hours in the queue and my gearbox had exploded before I'd travelled more than two car lengths. A long, slow trip home on a recovery truck, followed by several days off the road and a painful bill for a new differential and bellhousing.

With hugely expensive and inconvenient failures like this, its really not surprising that some owners choose to watch,, rather than take part.

At the end of the day its their car. They pay the bills, they look after it, they may not even enjoy drag racing/trackdays so its their choice.

Drag strips aren't my cup of tea Rosey, track days however are. Much more entertainment throwing the car round some twisties and much more track time than say a 13 sec blast on a overly sticky drag strip that's a car killer!

Get yourself to one next year mate thumb

Should be good for low 13's with a good launch - if not then high 13's

I can totally understand that viewpoint Nigel. I can see why alot of people don't do it.

I think I just find it difficult to adjust to this forum now and again(sorry guys, still love it though) as I was used to building turbomini's and on their forum there was always continued development, and a bit of friendly rivalry.

While I can see Nigels point, I question why some members have these high performance cars if they are not going to use them properly, be it strip or track, if you are constantly scared of using the car in anger or cannot afford it, why have it?

Seriously maybe a 306 dturbo may suit them better?

Just because a car isn't taken on the circuit or the dragstrip doesn't mean its not used in anger. Sure, it's becoming increasingly difficult to use all of a Coupé's potential on the road, but it doesn't mean its going to be treated gently. My own car is used very hard on the road, in all weathers and I know that many other modded Coupe owners are the same.

A 400bhp Coupe is modestly decent on a dragstrip. Its pretty handy on a circuit. However, its utterly devastating on the road, which is where 99.9% of Coupes spend 99% of their time. You don't have to be travelling at warp factor 9 (although its occasionally unavoidable wink ) - a powerful Coupe can be a lot of fun at legal speeds

The main factor is that the owners that stay away from the track and the dragstrip are probably the ones that don't kill their cars - the appeal is obvious

Davie - I also understand your viewpoint - I was SO exasperated this year when I was the only Coupe to run at Ten of the Best, despite "100% certain" promises from several members during the preceding 12 months

At the end of the day, some members are prepared to risk their cars, but most are not in a position to bear the cost of an avoidable breakage

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 29/11/2010 14:18

I'd guess that there are a huge amount of performance car owners who have never even sniffed near a track/drag event.

At an AutoItalia event at Santa Pod a few years ago there were hundreds of rare exotica. I seem to remember seeing only 2 ferraris go down the strip, and 1 of them (a 360 or maybe a 355) managed to break its gearbox and get towed home.

I always get amazed by the sheer amount of cars which are drag/track special car, rarely used, dragged out once a year to go to events. A lot of people simply cannot afford that luxury so most of us make a compromise. The coupe may be an affordable step into performance motoring but it doesn't mean things are cheap to fix.

It was a 360CS. I've got the video somewhere

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 29/11/2010 15:09

load it up..
that will be an up setting video to watch..

regarding the Pod..

i really wanted to run mine, but a dodge drive shaft and no time to fix it left me buggered and i just could not run the car, looking at the damaged done to other cars.. the pod would of chewed mine up and destroyed the drive shaft as well as the gearbox.

just not worth the risk at the point in time.

im sure the next event will be better!

A 306d Turbo is not going to be the same fun or adrenalin as a powerful coupe on the road is it?

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 29/11/2010 16:07

Kudos to those of you that do track/drag them, I'll see you on track next year smile Road driving has significant limits no matter how enthusiastic you may be, track driving is all about finding both the cars limit and the drivers limit.

And those who don't, I understand reasons why to. My 20vt is not my daily drive so I can afford that chance. Also, the coop is a fairly inexpensive way into good performance track days.

What I don't understand are those owners who won't go near a track as they are too scared?! And before you all deny it, I've heard that so many times smile

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 29/11/2010 16:21

I dont think scared is the right word to use.

I had never driven my car on a track before. Ive always wanted to do it, but didn’t feel comfortable just turning up one day and going straight in at the deep end.

At the agm I plucked up the courage to give curborough ago! I loved every min of it!
Now im looking forward to giving SPA a go. I think the issue is people who have never been on a track before may feel a bit worried to just turn up on a track day and go straight in at the deep end.

Maybe if some of the track gurus on here wanted to organise an amateur track day where they could go out as passengers in peoples cars and help them out, or take them out in their cars and teach them the ropes?

I want to do a few smaller tracks next year before spa..

As for drag racing... it just doesnt really appeal to me - I would even go as far as saying a tad boring laugh But its everyone to their own smile

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 29/11/2010 19:21

A track day for us wimps would be great... I would be scared of stacking my Coupe and finding that a broken wing leads to an insurance write-off shocked . I confess to hooning around a few of the Kentish country lanes and getting VERY close to the speed limit on the M20 when it is quiet laugh .

I was planning to have a go at Curborough, but CHOD meant I could not even get my Scottie to the AGM - god knows what might have happened if that had occurred whilst hacking round the track ooo .

I still regard the Coupe as a wonderful GT; she is NOT a racing car in anything resembling standard form, and is certainly not a dragster. I admire the cojones of anyone risking their beloved Coupe on the 1/4 mile, but they do need deeper wallets than I have rolleyes . I love my Coupe(s) too much to subject them to that abuse - too many get towed home. Mine got towed home from my son's school shocked , and I was NOT doing 140mph!

Like watching though!

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 29/11/2010 19:35

in my case i've lived most of my adult life driving boring company diesel cars trying to avoid getting too many points on my licence. i've only been on track twice driving, once at Spa last year and once at curborough at the AGM. what i've started to try and do is go out with a few of the experienced drivers to see if i can get any hints - but then when it's your car and your adrenaline it's a different matter!!

also, at my age, there are so many ways to meet my maker!!!!! laugh

i do need to add that i intended this to be a bit of a track car, but £13k later of issues i'm trying to build up a few quid back!!!

I concur with the drag comment, however subtle handling mods and she makes a very fine track car, at a performance per pound level virtually unmatched I would say. And if you are in possession of a large pair of testicles, even more so smile

Still not been towed home from a track, only twice in about 20 have I had to call the RAC, both on the way home, once when my intercooler pipe fell off about 10 miles outside Bristol after doing Castle Combe. Ok, admittedly I gave it a little bump which loosened it when I chose the scenic route on the track... But hardly an expensive repair. Secondly in mid wales after Anglesey, but again not an expensive repair.

Hope not to have cursed myself ahead of Silverstone this Friday driving

Re: Big Gun shoot out!!! - 30/11/2010 00:25

I have to say that even though the performance is good on a Coupe, not all of us buy them just for that.

Some of us appreciate the looks/styling of the car and being part of a great club like this one.

I usually say I'm scared of going on a track, but I'm not, what I'm scared of is damaging my car or someone elses.

My car is also my every day car and I need it, so can't afford for it to be off the road.

Anyway, I'm booked for Spa next year, so WILL be on track on the Coupe only sessions, so hopefully, you'll all keep away from me laugh

What does scare me the most though, is driving on the 'wrong' side of the road shocked laugh

Hi

My name's Shakespeare and I work for Shakespeare County Raceway, Stratford-Upon-Avon as the track's Club Liasion man. We recently joined your forum to ask if we could could contribute and to flash up our dates for 2011. Then I stumbled upon this thread. Sounds like you all had some fun with a great turnout of cars.

May I suggest that you consider running the next Big Gun Shootout at Shakey next year with one of our Public Track Days. We don't get the volume of vehicles that Santa pod gets but we're always there to help out so that clubs such as yours enjoy their day without the pain of having to wait in long queues and not being able to watch the racing at the same time.

We can help organsie a club thrash out such as this. Run a knockout elimination, give you club space. Anything like that.

Just have a look at some of the PTD dates on offer and get in touch with me on 01789 720180 or e-mail enquiries@shakespearecountyraceway.co.uk. We're here for the club members.

Oh and btw MCMIKE I live in Sutton Coldfield too. You may have seen my road car with Shakespeare County Raceway plastered all over it. Hear from you guys soon.

Would this 'Tolga' be tolga20VTURBO?

His coop was noisy and quick, but certainly not 12.2 quick at the Essex meet. In fact it was a bit slower than mine and a fair bit slower than R1Dan's (350bhp) when we had a few blasts.

Maybe he's done some more work, combined with the apparently sticky surface there...

Essex Meet
Dan was pushing him up the road at 1:30 and at 1.41 you can see the turning point when he overtook me laugh

Few 'fly-bys' from the same day Very noisy (Diddy and the Coupé)

Yes - that was an expensive day

100 mile journey
3-hour wait (track was damp)
£10 entry fee and £25 track fee

The organisers had been treating the track with 'glue', which was giving spectacular traction.

Unfortunately, when I side-stepped the clutch at 5,000rpm, the tyres just gripped, meaning that something else had to give

The replacement didn't last long either, so there's a Quaife in there now, but I shan't be doing any more RWYBs
