UK Outlaw Street FWD Shootout - 20/12/2010 15:32

We are looking to organise an Outlaw Street FWD shootout, they are massive in the US and with the number of fast FWD cars in the uk increasing yearly now seems like a good time to pull them all together in on location, for one weekend only

We are still in the planning stages at the moment, but please show your interest by following us on facebook

It will be 3 qualifying runs, then top 16 cars go through, then 4 rounds of knock outs.

Re: UK Outlaw Street FWD Shootout - 25/01/2011 09:55

None of the current uk fiat coupe's are quick enough to compete at this level unfortunately, and in the rules 5 cyl cars are not even permitted. This would seem only open to the 16vt guys and nobody in the uk has a serious enough one to compete.
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: UK Outlaw Street FWD Shootout - 26/01/2011 15:11

we can modify the rules if 5cyl cars want to join. Its only the weights, and it would come half way between 4 and 6 smile

Its not always the fastest cars that win on the day, reliability has a lot to pay in it. In the HKS series 50% of the time the fastest car doesnt win.

Re: UK Outlaw Street FWD Shootout - 26/01/2011 19:16

There would be no point, other than for personal entertainment

The fastest Coupe quarter is a high eleven, which would see us a long way down the times (several UK FWD cars are now breaking into the high nines)

Even stripped out, a Coupe is around 1200kg, which puts us at a massive disadvantage compared with the sub-1000kg flyweights.

I reckon a Coupe would need 800+ bhp in order to compete, and even then, traction would be a massive issue
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: UK Outlaw Street FWD Shootout - 27/01/2011 12:03

i may do it if we can sort out what class etc i would be in and it looks i have a chance of qualifying but like nigel says i doubt i will be that competetive particularly in view of the fact i have never done a 1/4 mile run as yet..(though theres plenty of time to change that before the event)

i don't think there would be any point in me going for more power to try and get anywhere though i could quite easily make more as i am going to struggle with traction anyway and breaking things

anyway i am game for it

Re: UK Outlaw Street FWD Shootout - 27/01/2011 20:00

As two of us have found out to our costs, too much traction is very bad for gearboxes - the diff just isn't up to it

Also, if you've never done a quarter mile before, you really need to get some practice - its pretty difficult to launch a standard Coupe in order to get the book figure quarter time (circa 14.5 seconds). When you double the power, I reckon it more than doubles the difficulty level

When I went from 300bhp to 400+, my times got slower for the first few runs - I reckon it took at least ten runs (over two or three events) before I got the hang of it

Sadly, I won't be doing any more drag runs, as I now know I have sufficient power to break a diff frown

Re: UK Outlaw Street FWD Shootout - 28/01/2011 17:50

If you have big power, track tyres and a grippy surface, release the clutch a bit more gently, if you release it fast at 5000rpm that sends a massive impact straight through the diff and gearbox.
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: UK Outlaw Street FWD Shootout - 29/01/2011 22:38

surely one of the new big power coupes have enough to rip the lower power light weight cars?
Posted By: Jack

Re: UK Outlaw Street FWD Shootout - 29/01/2011 23:37

for the same price you can do totb and you get 1/4 mile, top speed, and circuit plus they dont discriminate against 5 cylinders

Run a APEXI Boost controler and set it low in first gear?

Still wont help. When you dial in 4000rpm and dump the clutch a boost controller isn't going to help save the gearbox

Agreed - if I had performed the same launch in a standard car, the diff would still have broken - it was the shock load of too much traction, trying to shift a 1400+kg car - something had to give - normally its the tyres, but with the track being super-sticky that day, something else broke frown
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: UK Outlaw Street FWD Shootout - 31/01/2011 09:56

that track was soooo sticky it was crazy.

pod claimed alot of gearbox's that day.
still shocked how you managed to limp it down the 1/4 mile Nigel!?

Re: UK Outlaw Street FWD Shootout - 31/01/2011 15:37

Guess we need to re-think the way forward to make a faster 1/4 mile. Faster spool-up, faster torque delivery? Spare gearbox..lol

It seems a shame to break Coupes drag-racing when they are one of the prettiest and most capable GTs ever. Track days are fun (although I'd never risk breaking mine), but leave the drag tracks alone unless your Coupe is surplus to requirements IMHO

^^^^ +1 couldn't agree more.

Leave the drag strip for those lighter creatures better suited!

I guess you mean JohnS' Ink Black Coupe (rather than my Sprint Blue)? It was broken for spares a year or two ago... cry

Sadly, the Coupe is just too heavy to do well in drag events - we can't get below about 1150kg, even with everything stripped out. This is leaving us with a 200-300kg disadvantage against the Vauxhall boys

When you do a top speed event, you might get some Coupe interest...

Maybe you're pretty wrong.. maybe nobody REALLY tried to do that in UK .. click to enlarge ...Oh, I forget to specify..: is still A LOT of weight to drop.. now my door is 11.6kg.. one fiberglass door is about 6kg.. my bonnet ~12.4kg.. fiberglass bonnet (race purpose not "bling-bling" one) has about 9kg. Fuel tank at my car weight is standard one.. if is replaced with aluminium front tank, help at mass distribution AND drop another 7kg... the bar that is under dashboard, weight about 14kg..one duraluminium replacement , has about 3kg ...My brakes is useless at drag and is Very heavy... here is room too for a lot better lightweight(ALSO with smaller brakes can be used 15" rims and drag slicks that help A LOT at good 60ft) .My wheels was the standard set.. here could be droped again about 10-15kg ... That is the story Mr. Nigel.. Sadly NOBODY from fccuk ever really tried to get a decent ET .. frown.. All of our mates came at dragstrip with rear tyres Very large width, and Maybe..just maybe with street (semi)slicks on front rims.. Not to say they came in many occasions with...bigger rims than std 16" ...and that's pretty hilarious for somebody that pretend is coming to get a best ET for his car..:)
