The number of places on the track session is normally limited to 4 0r 5 so there is little point in any one else asking for a place.

Excellent day out last year and would be there again this year, but for some terrible planning!

Will still be in France that weekend and then the week after that the Coupe will be going over to its new home there.

Going to miss the option to go for drives over here, but at least I can take it out on (near) empty roads over there!

Re: May 3rd 2014 AutoItalia @ Brooklands . - 06/04/2014 23:00

I'd like to put my proverbial oar in please!
Can those who have done an event, be it either track or hill climb, let those who have not, have a go first, then if there are spaces left, the remainder of spaces go into a hat for those who have already had a go. Sound fair?
Posted By: PeteP

Re: May 3rd 2014 AutoItalia @ Brooklands . - 06/04/2014 23:22

Indeed that is the fairest way.

I will contact Phil Ward this week to see how many places will be available for us.

I have received his reply this morning.

There is no limit to the number of coupes who may go on the test hill, you need to simply register on the day.

For the track session, there is space for 5 coupes only. He has asked me to give him names as soon as possible.

As suggested earlier, we will give people who have not done a track run in previous years first chance to participate.

So, if you haven't done it before and still want to have a go, please let me know. I will need both forum names and real names please.

Let's say by Sunday afternoon. If there are more than 5, then club members will get priority.

edit Note all track session drivers will need to show their driving licences at sign in.

I did it in the 16NA the year I piled my glider into the ground and broke my back in three places; raised a few hundred quid for the Air Ambulance thanks to the kind sponsorship of members here.

Nobody fell asleep... even though I was still walking with sticks!

Such a shame I am not attending this year, (sorry, going away with family and friends for the weekend, totally forgot about Brooklands when we booked it), especially as there are some names on the list I have not put faces too yet!.

Hope you all have a good day and the weather is kind to you all.

Re: May 3rd 2014 AutoItalia @ Brooklands . - 28/04/2014 10:08

This is purely an observation but this year's AutoItalia looks like it will have far less Coupes attending than previous years.

Last year the thread had 10x more hits and loads more replies.

Is there something wrong? Or will people just turn up- it is one of the highlights to my FCCUK year!

I hope to see old and new friends on Saturday- weather forecast even looks reasonable.

Ace Cafe London
Ace Corner
North Circular Road
Stonebridge
London
NW10 7UD

It's probably a bit out of the way but it's easy to find and there should be no traffic at that time on a saturday.

I'll be setting off from Lightwater (just the other side of the M3 to Bracknell) between 8 and 9, depending on whether the kids are ready or not rolleyes can meet right at Junc 3 and go M3/M25 or back roads.

Anyone going past Clacket Lane M25 services want to stop off and meet beforehand? We'd need to be leaving Clackets at around 7.30 to get to Brooklands for 8.00 doors open.

Anyone interested suggest we meet from 7 outside petrol station parking area (which is on exit road) as main car park can get a bit packed.

Great running on the track, you have a beautiful car there my friend.
Yes I was already to pace you lot and show you my new genuine old stock Abarth twin pipe exhaust if you could keep!!!!
They said they had found a pace car so my chance of glory was scuppered.
How come we only had 3 laps, bit disappointed with that.

My car did go better that expected considering this weeks engine built.

Well done to all that attended, great day.

A fiat 500 broke down on the main straight and took a while for the recovery truck to clear it away, I guess that limited our run.

It was another great brooklands event although I was a little disappointed with the hill climb this year (the coupes put on a good show though!). Thankfully there were some American engined cars that provided some wheel spinning, tyre shedding entertainment!

The burgundy red one. Only got it 4 weeks ago and in reality it needs a bit of work so not quite as spotless as yours looked. Its like going back in time compared to the coupe, but I'm loving every minute of it.

Ah, the ex US CS1 124 Spider, very nice.
I take it the US bumpers were replaced before you purchased.
Has it still got the anti-smog bits on it?
As you say different mind set is needed to drive, just great fun with less than 100bhp

Got it in one. Thankfully all of the anti-smog stuff has gone. Got it from DTR and they told me its the euro-spec engine. Certainly no cat so I'm loving the sound. I need to do a few tasteful mods. The indicators don't look quite right and the red OMP racing harness seat belts look OTT so will have to go.

Sorry but I didn't get to take any decent pics of the test hill. I couldn't even get near it as the crowds were more than ever this year and I left it too late to get a decent view. I had to make do with watching from the Abarth stand. Which wasn't all bad.
Posted By: DaveG

Re: May 3rd 2014 AutoItalia @ Brooklands . - 08/05/2014 22:34

I did both the track and the hill this time, first time for either but prefer to have more time looking around than signing in or going to the driver briefings or queueing. I was having a good look at your bumpers cyborg, I've been toying with the idea of getting a new set of chrome or stainless steel pre-74 bumpers to put on my SpiderEuropa, think I prefer them to the Abarth bumper-ettes. I was also thinking of getting a set of early sidelight/indicator lenses and putting some kind of LED panels underneath to avoid cutting large holes under the headlights, there are some other brackets to mount the indicators under the bumpers I think. It's been off the road for 6+ years, not much more to do now...
Posted By: cyborg7

Re: May 3rd 2014 AutoItalia @ Brooklands . - 09/05/2014 21:33

It'll be great to get it back on the road after that time. SpiderEuropa's are love and so rare that you must. Love to see it once its done.

Yes I remember it in DTR.
Totally agree about the front indicators, so wrong!
Try to find a set of oe lamps and cut holes to suit.
So if it's euro spec engine then probably a CC coupe engine has been fitted so 118bhp.
What number is on the block above the oil filter?

Again totally agree with you Dave, this was my 2nd year of track and hill. You have precious little time to have a gander, not complaining though.

What ever you do Dave, do not put LEDs' on your spider.

I also have 2 other spiders, a CS1 1800 and a BS1 1608. Wonderful beasts thumb

Had a look near the oil filter but couldn't see any numbers so probably need it outside or on a ramp. The only other plate I've found say cs1 and 1976. I'm tempted to replace the indicators with some smallish driving lights and stick the indicators under the bumper for now or maybe swap the for some rectangular chrome ones again under the bumpers. Completely agree that the cut in OE ones would look best, but after seeing the price they'll have to wait for another day. Buying this has cleared me out for now.

I've seen other cars (only photos) where driving lights in the grill have been done quite effectively. Just need to find some not too small, but small enough not to foul the bonnet. Only ones I've seen are motorbike ones (street fighter dominator single lamps at 75mm diameter). 100mm plus seem that they would get in the way of opening the bonnet.

Engine numbers are on a machined flat above the oil filter housing and to left of dip stick.

I would think you would be short of funds, wasn't the car around £9000?

I'll have a look at the engine no. at the weekend when it's safe to get it out of the garage when in finally stops raining.
It was up for £14.5 originally but I didn't pay that. I knew DTR would be dealer prices but I wasn't prepared to take a risk so stuck with DTR in the end as I'd seen some real sheds out there.

There's a couple of spiders on their website at the moment - one for £17k and one for £15k. Another (also at 17k) I saw sold only last week so they seem to be shifting them.

There's definitely a market for them because they do increase in value and fun to drive.
I could not quite remember the price.

No wonder I couldn't see the plate - thick with oil totally obscuring it. Took some serious de-gunking to make it legible:

Not sure what the numbers mean anything to you, but interested to know if they do. Also here are some pics so again not sure if there's any of the US spec emissions stuff still remaining:

132 means derived from the engines in the Fiat 132, A1 means 1756cc and 040.6 means one of several US versions (Euro versions are 000). The bottom number is the engine number. There's hardly any emission control stuff on there, my first 124 Spider from 1974 had an exhaust cam driven air pump with injection points next to the spark plugs and all sorts of extra pipes and connections on the carburettor.

That air filter you have is missing a pipe that brings hot air up from above exhaust manifold in winter with a fixed flap under the top of the air filter "lid" that you move to one of two positions

Yes, I agree with DaveG, it appears to be a US engine.

I see you still have the anti-smog relays and wiring. I removed mine and rewired to make it neater.

Thanks both, that's really useful. I need to get a proper workshop manual as my understanding of electrics is pretty woeful. I got a Hayes manual off amazon last week, but it's a reprint and isn't all that good.

Are the anti-smog relays the banks of six square things in the bottom right of 2nd pic? probably showing my ignorance now, so might be best I leave well alone.

Did you mean a Haynes manual? The hardback one with a light green cover and a (BC, IIRC) Coupe on the front? When you say it "isn't all that good" do you mean the quality of the reprint is poor, or the content is poor? I thought (content wise) it was pretty good, produced in the days when they used a lot of manufacturer drawings. Obviously it relates mostly to the Coupe but it does acknowledge the Spider and does have some Spider-specific wiring diagrams - it may not have your exact wiring schematic but you should find something good enough, plus over the years you may find that some modifications have been done. I have one pristine version in a cupboard and another rather messy version in the garage.

There's a spare parts manual produced in the US that shows those relays and other associated anti-smog gubbins which I can scan to PDF and email if you want, but unless it's interfering with the running of the engine, I would say leave it all there, I would assume that DTR removed all the unnecessary stuff already.

Half are and half are not.
Send me your email and I'll try to sort out a wiring diagram for you.
Tell me what is on the plate inside the drivers door jam, model year wise

Cheers both. Pic of plate below (type 124 CS1 made 1976). I'll PM you my email. The Hayes manual I got was a softback reprint where the reprinted photos have come out v.v. dark and a bit too much guesswork is required. When I was the Brooklands Autoitalia event I saw a proper 124 workshop manual for sale that was far far better in terms of detail. But it was for the sedan version, so I passed. If I could get one of those for the coupe/spider then I'd probably feel a bit more confident.

Chris, Have you had a look on the Fiat Forum website? http://www.fiatforum.com/

I ask as I was able to download a workshop manual for the X 1/9 there a couple of days ago.

good thinking Pete - I'll give it a go. I've had a quick search but need to scour it a bit more.
