FCSS 10th anniversay 17/06/17

Yes I can't believe it either, and seeing that it's 10 years there's no excuse for me not have an event as I've missed organising an open days many times in the past because of always being too busy.

The invitation is open to all Coupé owners, customers and friends, plans are already in place for the function room at the Drum and Monkey public house which is just down the road from the FCSS units, large parking area with good camping facilities, shower block, electrical hook up, wifi (£10/pitch) and a cooked breakfast for those who'd like to stay over, we'd need more than 10x people for breakfast to make it worth their while organising the chef on a Sunday.

Activities are being organised for the Saturday afternoon,
Start meeting up at around midday.
Function room gathering/chat at around 4pm.
Evening meal hog roast or fish things for the meat dodgers, real Ale of course, all outside weather permitting and a local live band, and more.

Sunday road trip for lunch, location to be agreed yet, and a Coupé parade through the town just so we can annoy my locals on a Sunday

Days Inn Tewkesbury which is located at Strensham services M5 North bound, there's a back lane from there to Upton Upon Severn which takes 10 minutes, of if you're travelling south bound you can exit the rear over the bridge and come in at the rear North bound, map can be supplied.

I've put this idea to the Scottish contingent as a possible "tour", but not necessarily to replace a similar 4-day event that we did this year in June (over the same weekend as the FCSS event).

I've had no feedback at all so far which isn't boding well atm, but if it took on then that could make a significant increase in the numbers. I'll try and firm up asap.

Sunday breakfast, lunch and activities.


The plan is to enjoy a full English at the Drum Sunday morning, for those who are staying over camping please add their names for who'd like breakfast so I can let Liz know the chef will be needed, 10x names minimum.

After the plan is to leave The Drum between 11.30am-midday, annoy the locals as we leave and travel M50-M5 north onto the M40 south and exit at junction 12 for the British Motor museum at Gaydon.

Speaking with the museums management they've informed me that on the same day as our visit there's a Pre 1930 motorcycle run on so the main car park will be full of two wheeled vehicles and there owners and they'll be riding off and returning all afternoon. For our group we can park in their overflow site at the top of the hill which is large enough to accommodate all of us and only a short walk down the hill to the museum.
As a group we'll get a discount on the entry ticket to the museum, and if you keep the receipt you can return as many times as you like for free over the next 12 months.

Parking at the top also makes it handy for our Sunday lunch as I've reserved us 30-50 seats for roast lunch at the The Malt Shovel arriving at around 1pm, it's a 15-20 minute walk from the car park, they do have parking but only enough for 25 cars so if there’s more then that number, which it looking very likely they've asked us to park as planned at the museum so none Coupé guests can have priority to park for lunch.

I'm a possible for the Sunday, but likely to be the Gaydon part only.

To check out parking and the plans for our Sunday lunch I took a trip over to Gaydon yesterday and enjoy a roast beef dinner with all the trimmings at the Malt shovel public house, very enjoyable and the pork looks just as good so a big thumbs up for their food and service, very pleasant pub with happy staff and they offer real ales as well

Their car park isn't massive, capacity for 20x cars so can all able people park at the museum or on the old Warick road that's now a cul-de-sac at the top end to allow the owners/partners who'd struggle with walking take preference so they're on the pubs door step.

We do have two choices for where to park during lunch, on Warick road, 3rd exit off the roundabout as you come in to Gaydon, which does have yellow lines, on a Sunday, should be ok or the over flow car park as first discussed a few weeks ago at the top by the museum entrance, walking distance is easy from both so I'll let you guys decide, the main point here is to not overfill the Malt shovels car park as they'll still have locals arriving for lunch but with our predicted numbers we'll probably fill most of the pub, which brings me on to the final point and that's interested people who are 'maybe' and yet to confirm, can you guys let me know as I need to have a clearer idea of who's confirmed and coming as it's the difference between me order half a pig for the Saturday evenings meal or a full pig, we don't want to be running out of food of beer so check your calendars and partners diaries and update the list please not forgetting Sunday 18th June is Fathers day

Um - veggie burgers would be cool, and zero alcohol beer with lemonade is my favourite tipple - I have been known to get "drunk" on it!

JBT told me today that he will have finished the work on Doris by then so all good. Managed to get a room at the Star Inn in Upton Upon Severn booked today- there were only a couple of rooms left.

I've been in denial about this for far too long but with heavy heart will have to withdraw The original plan was to combine it with a stopover at Leeds with family but now they are coming north.....there is also a Junior University music event now scheduled on the same day ....and one of our lads is handing over the keys to his recently-sold flat that weekend.

Weather report for next weekend is presently 23 degrees and dry so fingers crossed it holds so the guys camping don't get drowned.

For people camping please can you go and see Liz when you arrive so she can direct you to our allocated area and show you the showers etc, costs for the pitch are £10.00.

The general plan is we'll have access to the function room from midday Saturday, there's a few arriving Friday night and Saturday morning from Europe, people can start arriving any time after 1pm, the Drum will be serving lunch or there's a few places in Upton along with several pubs all serving pretty good grub, a fish and chips shop and a good bakers.

Hog roast at the Drum will start around 7pm, live entertainment around 8.30pm, Jenny is performing 2x 1hr slots so we'll be ending the evening around midnight.

Breakfast Sunday morning will start sharp at 9am, please buy your breakfast raffle ticket the night before from one of the bar staff, full English is £6.50, Liz has asked me to stress we need to be on time as her cleaning staff arrive at 10.30am so no dilly-dally about please.

The convoy from the Drum to Gaydon is presently pencilled to leaving between 11.30am-12.00pm, we'll annoy the locals nicely so out on to the A38 and head south to join the M50, M5 and M40 to Gaydon.
Due to the number of cars we won't be able to use the Malt Shovel car park as they don't have enough spaces, please park in the top over flow car park for the British Motor Museum, it's only a short walk to the village, anyone who'd struggle with walking of course takes preference to park at the pub.

Just seen the weather forecast for the weekend, wow I might take my coat off.

This weekends events are shared with the Royal Three counties show, basically this lot below......



.......... which by 6pm today will be twice the size, then we have the visiteors traffic Staurday and Sunday so let me give you guys the heads up on the most direct routes in so you're not stuck sitting in the traffic for the Three counties, it will be busy.

North bound M5 get off at junction 9 heading for Tewkesbury, follow the A438 to the high street, turn left at the mini roundabout, along Mythe road for half a mile then left back on to the A438 heading for Ledbury, over a single lane bridge with traffic lights, follow that road until you see the B4221 on the right sign posted Upton Upon Severn, turn right and follow that road for 3.5 miles and you'll find the Drum and Monkey on the left.

South bound M5 do not get off at junction 7, stay on the M5 heading south and get off at junction 8, head West on the M50 and exit at junction 1 heading south towards Tewkesbury on the A38, turn right onto the A438, single road over the bridge with traffic lights and then follow the above route in on the B4221.

M50 heading East stay on until junction 1, if you get off at junction 2 you'll be stuck in the traffic coming over/around the Malvern hills so carry on to junction 1, head South on the A38 towards Tewkesbury and follow the route in via the B4221.

Anyone heading West on a none motorway route, head for Tewkesbury on the A46, follow the route in after the high street, if we can all travel in via the B4221 you won't experience any delays as we'll be well away from the thousands travelling to the Three Counties.

Good luck today Joe for what looks like a very impressive collection of coupes , last time i went to an event with my coupe was Rockingham in....?? 2005 i think it was......getting old cant remember year but remember the track.
I am hoping to pop down to take some pictures ...will be tomorrow as working today .....when would be a good time to come by tomorrow I dont want food just to look at the cars / take pics if people dont mind / soak up the coop love.
I d also like to see the cars /take part in the drive to town but i wont be able to go onto Gaydon . What are the times for setting off from the drum tomorrow please . Once again Joe thank you for organising ...will make it even harder to sell my coupe once ive seen the great and the good tomorrow . Better get polishing my tank

OK. I might have a problem. Having battery issues. Car started last night after being sat for a week but won't turn over this morning. Tried jumping it from the Land Rover but the immobiliser has kicked in. Can anyone tell me how to reset? Still not much charge in the battery. Help!

I had this problem on the 2.4, a new battery solved it.

Another hiccup at home prevents me from making this meet.

Just back from the Saturday event (had to dash back for another Hog-Roast Event locally-which supports the Air Ambulance -don't ask!)

Great to meet so many coupe owners! Neil, Dave, Clint, Chris, Martin, KJ and all who I have forgotten to mention!

Great to see so many coupes in one place-and gave me lots of inspiration for improving mine!

As we sweltered on a scorching Saturday afternoon - the topic of conversation was who had working a/c !! (no-one I could find!!)

My car suffered bizarre loss of ride control on the way to the event- so a slow and gentle drive back was order of this morning. Along with loss of a/c. And the dreaded 4 cylinders hic-cup has returned! So some investigation work required this week...

Wouldn't have missed the event though- fantastic testament to Joe and all he has done for the coup out of fcss.

Best part of the evening for me was catching Joe in the bar for the last pint of the evening and chatting away about the future - we all need you Joe! Congrats on the first 10 years!!

Very much enjoyed the trip from Upton to Gaydon today, even though my AC is clearly not up to scratch (much it seems like everyone else's)!
The pub grub was excellent and a big thank you to Mike for the lift back to the Museum. This probably saved me having to explain to my mother what had happened to my 80-year-old father in today's heat)!
We managed to enjoy just over an hour at the museum before driving safely back to Glos.
Great to meet some more Coupe owners and indeed so many other Portofino owner's, with seemingly, not one of us a hairdresser by profession!
All in all, a memorable way to spend father's day with my old man. Thanks to Joe and all who made the trip.

What a great weekend and a true testament to the owners of this beautiful coupe. That said, many of our cars wouldn't have been there without the help, skill, knowledge and dedication Joe has shown for the coupe over the last 10 years. Congratulations and happy anniversary Joe, here's to many more decades keeping the coupe alive!

Other than Brooklands, it was mine and Jans first proper 'coupe only' meet and it was lovely to meet coupster friends from both sides of the water. I did remember a lot of your real names from the weekend but unfortunately can't place all the forum names to the faces but it was lovely to meet you all and see such a lovely display of cars. It was good to know that nobody had any coupe issues that stopped play other than just about everyone's AC not working on a weekend when it really was needed......first stop, getting my AC sorted this week for sure!

Great weekend! This was my first proper coupe meet and it was a really chilled experience. It was also good to put some faces to the forum names. As already commented upon elsewhere in this thread, not one of us Porto Blue owners are (or ever have been) hairdressers

Story: why it was pretty hard to actually get to the UK..

It all sounded pretty easy.

1/ Drop the kids off at some grandmothers (admittedly, sounds easy, but it's a lot of packing and multiple babyseats and in total it's a 4-hour drive).
2/ Meet up at my workplace, leave 1 car behind
3/ Drive to train station
4/ Train to Antwerp
5/ Train Antwerp to Amsterdam
6/ Flight Amsterdam to Birmingham, Holiday Inn
7/ Pick-up by Neil, drive to Upton
8/ ...
9/ Days Inn
10/ Eurotunnel back
11/ You know: cars, kids,...

Unfortunately... Middle one was on a bus from a school trip, 15 minutes late (train!!). We were in a bit of a hurry. Also, trains were disrupted due to an outage in a sign station and car was not an option since Ghent to Antwerp was 3 hours instead of 1 hour drive due to traffic. The Coupé Gods were with us though: sign station was up and running again and when we arrived at the station, the first train that didn't get cancelled was about to leave.

Arrived in Antwerp with half an hour to spare! Woow!

Unfortunately... waiting for the train to Amsterdam where we would take the flight, I suddenly spotted the date for the flight. Which was the Saturday at 22:00. Errr... okay, so no flight.

Amsterdam was no longer an option since the only available flight on Friday evening / Saturday morning was 1st class coming in at a whopping 2.600 Euro.

We decided to cancel the train to Amsterdam (50% refund), cancel the flight (no refund yet, they only accept incoming calls from monday to friday), cancel the Birmingham hotel (no refund), take the train to Brussels and get on the Eurostar on Saturday morning.

Only... upon getting our tickets for that train, the ticket guy asked for an ID. Seemingly though, the missus forgot her ID at work. 'Can you give yours?' Well, yes, but we'll need your ID to get past customs.

Called work, checked if the ID card was indeed there. And behold, the Coupé Gods once more came through: not only was the ID there on the desk, also a collegue was still there who lives in Antwerp. 'Shall I bring it to you?' Woow! 40 minutes waiting time and we had the ID.

During those 40 minutes, rearranged pick-up by Neil because we wouldn't be in Birmingham. Then again, St Albans train station is a lot closer. We also checked out which paperwork we would still need, because carring the stuff for flight etcetera was no longer necessary.

Oh no, wait, checking the date, our return ticket seems to have been booked for the 25th of June. Which is next week.

Problem with the Eurotunnel is, if you book tickets 2 days in advance, they tend to go up from € 79 to € 240 so I was getting worried we'd have to eat bread and drink water for the next 2 weeks. Coupé Gods to the rescue again though: the upgrade / date change was only € 15.

So... tickets to Brussels, small hotel in Brussels, 6 am early rise, on to the Eurostar.

Arriving in London, we took train tickets for St Albans. We had about 3 minutes to just hit the 'promotion of the day' which happened to be a return ticket to St Albans. We went for them because we couldn't figure our how to book a single ticket (kept pointing us to a desk with a large queue somewhere to buy a ticket). The return tickets could be exchanged, but the value was £ 8,60 and we would have to pay £ 8,70 for the privilidge to hand them over, which is a net loss of £ 0,10 so they ended up in the trash can.

End of story. I will triple check dates etc. before we hit 'buy' next time.

Now that the dust has settled and I've taken a few deep breaths I can sit down and say thank you to everyone one who joined us over the weekend, the owners who travelled the length of the country, and to all the owners who travelled over from around Europe, you guys all truly made the event what it was and it was awesome if I may say so myself.
To quote Jake's words “it was one of the most chilled Coupé meets ever”, you can imagine he's been to a few with me over the years so with him saying this and watching all you guys keeping cool in the shade sipping on Ale's Saturday, Sunday road tripping, Sunday lunch at Gaydon and even more faces to me it was a great success and I'll remember the event for many years to come.

To our Dutch friends, thank you guys and girls for the massive effort to come over and your gifts, the canvas picture of me at Assen this year hangs proudly on my office wall. To Franck who came up from France, and to Keyjey who was flying but didn't fly, then came in via EuroStar on Saturday and to Neil for collecting Kayjey and Joke and bring them up in your 16v.

Liz at the Drum did an excellent job as our function room host and plenty of cold beer, I hope all who experienced a pint of Butties for the first time enjoyed the drink, you can buy it online direct from Wye valley brewery, link at the bottom
A real shame the weather was so hot in the evening, hats off to Jenny with the live entertainment as she gave it her best, but singing to a near empty room must be the worst scenario a live entertainer can dream of, I've emailed her and her agent to pass on my thanks under such difficult and hot conditions, have to say the weather over the weekend and today has been blisteringly hot!

Deb at The Malt Shovel put on a lovely lunch, the hot weather killed my appetite as it did many others but the whole convoy, road trip playing catch up and keeping cool after that walk was an experience so again my gratitude to all who attended.

Jake and Alex did a sterling job selling raffle tickets for the Worcester animal rescue centre, we raised just under £100.00 which will be dropped in later this week.
Sunday evening Liz picked a winning raffle from my mixing bowl, before someone shouts “Fix”…. I'd like to say I did have 3x witnesses watch Liz blindly pick a winner which was number 074…… Barnacle….. Mr Neil Barnes

10 years is only 120 months, that doesn't sound very much at all unless you calculate those years as days, 3650, now that's quite a few
I suppose what I'm trying to say is I'm approaching a crossroads at this point in my life, I'm 48 years old and juggling a lot of personal stuff that could have an outcome of changes my circumstances over a period of a few weeks, it's not all plain sailing and happy days I'm afraid, gratefully FCSS is the busiest it's even been and I really appreciate all of my regulars returning year after a year so I can look after your pride and joy, the full restoration work is really exciting, I get such a buzz out of working with you guys and as Pete has said above, yes it is a vocation way more then a job, it's who I've become and it keeps me focused and level so I'll continue to look forward to coming to work in the morning, but from now on I need to finish at 5pm and keep realistic hours as the years of 12hr days isn't healthy tbh and it's one of the reasons this personal stuff has come about so it's a new working directive that will be upheld and I can maybe start to feel I have a life outside work, we'll see.

To sum up, again thank you everyone for the weekend and to all the owners who emailed, text and phoned their best wishes and apologise that they couldn't make it, it's lovely to have so many great clients and genuine friends, even people who sold up years ago have emailed to congratulate me on 10 years, appreciated all your messages.

Klaas that story was just mental! It's worse than both my epics - the "ash-cloud" replacement journey from Schipol to Edinburgh and Emilia's and my trip to Assen this year missing 3 ferries - put together!

Stopped a the local supermarket on the way home to, er, 'check' their stock levels of icecream. As we got out of the car, a young chap pulled up behind us and said " 'kin' great car, mate, proper old school!"

Same happened to me twice. In Harwich on the way to upton the customs officer took a great interest in my car and on the way back on the car park at the tesco in Folkestone a chap walked past the car commenting what a beautiful car it was.
Great weekend, sorry we had to leave a bit earlier than expected.

I have to sell my coupe 14 years of fun but circumstances mean I cant keep two cars now and i want it to go to someone who will look after it , let me know if you get anyone enquiring after a good honest coop ... i ll put it on auto trader and here at the weekend around the 2200 mark.
I ve still got the video of all the cars leaving the drum on route to gaydon , will try to upload !
