Polling for super meet / drive...

Polling for super meet / drive... - 07/01/2006 01:10

When i had my 1st coop i drove to belgium to get loads of duty frees..
The drive was awesome, stunning cold spring morning and quiet roads,
I got to Dover for the Euro tunnel @ 6am, drove aboard and then had the dash accross france etc..

I was home by 5pm fully stocked up too,

So my question is who would be up for a meet @ Dover sometime, and then a day to Belgium or any place surrounding?
A hotel can be arranged with ease for a 1 night stay..

The footage hooning it down the foriegn roads @ 140+ would be amazing..

Thoughts on a postcard..

Kayjey

It sounds to me like there might be some interest in a big summer Euro meet. I am sure it could be good fun and if we were to make block bookings costs would probably be more acceptable to a larger number of members.

A group buy on ferry tickets now that would be fun

Re: Polling for super meet / drive... - 12/01/2006 22:50

Okay, I'll check it out and see what interesting things we can do. I haven't driven in France too many times and we should try to avoid the toll routes, but maybe we can sort something very nice with a hotel in Luxembourg - extremely cheap petrol there. Just a brainstorm...

- arrive in Calais around noon on Friday, I pick you guys up
- go to Brugges for some shopping in group or on your own (CROWDY!), scenic tour by myself, food, party, sleep, breakfast
- next day drive up to Luxembourg
- meet up with people joining only Saturday
- Luxembourg there around noon for food
- visit some castle or vineyard or...
- saturdaynight in a hotel, party, breakfast,...
- each their own to England again on sunday

as an alternative:

- calais early saturday (10.00)
- drive up to a nice town for food and shopping
- drive up to a champagne chateau in Reims
- stay in a hotel for the night
- maybe we can arrange a trackday experience on sunday? ooh! Or just go watch one?

or something else:

- arrive in Calais early saturday
- drive to Kortrijk or Brugges for shopping and an organised karting race, mixed sports event or similar
- evening dinner in Ghent all-you-can-eat wok restaurant
- explore the nightlife
- stay somewhere in a hotel
- no organised events on sunday - stay and explore or return

Anyone interested, could you post how many miles you want to do at max, starting from Calais...? And what your budget for the combination of organised activities (if you want to participate) and hotel + food is? And what activities you are interested in? (pick: shopping, karting, mixed sports competition, wine/champagne tasting, nightlife,...)

If this goes on I'll surely offer roadmaps etc. to the people interested so that nobody gets lost or so that anybody can catch up if you have a problem, arrive later,...

Good call Kayjey!!

Others should read over this..

Re: Polling for super meet / drive... - 12/01/2006 22:56

something else yet...

- arrive in Calais friday afternoon
- enjoy the evening in Ghent with wok restaurant, nightlife and hotel
- meet up with people arriving on saturday
- drive up to Mechelen for organised professional car control course and karting
- back to Brugges to eat and spend the night
- back to england on sunday

Re: Polling for super meet / drive... - 12/01/2006 23:04

Yep looks good.
Anyone mind if we bat around a few alternative suggestions?
Amsterdam, for instance, is 225 miles from Calais, via Belgium of course.

(The big bridge at Millau in France is about 560 miles)

Very much up for this - well used to driving in France - Great roads!

Re: Polling for super meet / drive... - 13/01/2006 02:43

Major thing though is to make sure you have enough time for everything. I drove 450 miles up and down again for the Christmas do. I started off at 8.00 in the morning and arrived in Harrogate around 16.00. And believe me, that was with some spirited driving. So I guess starting from Calais, we shouldn't do more than 250 miles or so. That will take us to Luxembourg at the furthers. So if you just want to make it a fancy meeting with a lot of driving, pick one of the above suggestions. If you want something exotic, consider the Champagne tasting in a chateau. I know one that has the cellars far below the ground and you take a little train to drive around it. Might be a splendid experience, though we'll have to set up a party in a less 'classy' environment, which is where Ghent might come in nicely.

This sound fun to me . Money and mileage wont be an issue as it's probably going to be the only holiday abroad for me and the misses.

That sounds like fun but I will have to drive from St. Malo as thats where the boat goes. Gives me more miles swanning about la belle france though so all good. Easter time is not a bit of a mare for me as on call but can change for the chance to see kayjey again

Re: Polling for super meet / drive... - 14/01/2006 03:19

Ok, just for an idea I asked pricing for the karting and the slip/brake course.

We have about 45 quid per person for a full grand prix karting race with 270cc 10bhp karts, warm-up, qualifying, b-finals and superfinal including champagne and trophy.

Whe have around 135 quid per person for a half day of theoretical and practical training for car control (unvoluntary oversteer slip) and braking in emergency situations.

All excludes drinks and food.

Feedback welcome.

Ditto exactly!

Love the sound of this. Alison and I were hoping to escape to France/Europe for a (our only) holiday this year. Sounds fantastic!

Love Brugges as well. We went there for our honeymoon a few years back.

Yes, yes, yes lets do it!

1st 2 weeks of April i think, and lets have your poll on what you would prefer from Kajeys ideas..

Maybe you can get a page set up Kajey, so they or we can clicky what we want to do from the things you have listed..

Including what day arriving etc?

Re: Polling for super meet / drive... - 18/01/2006 01:19

...put me down as another interested coop. Deffo be up for an adventure like this, including the track day might tip it out of my budget though.

Re: Polling for super meet / drive... - 19/01/2006 16:37

Ok, I'm working out some of the ideas I have. Normally today I will have a few rough propositions, hopefully including pricing information. For now I'm putting by bets on 7-8-9 april, although depending on reservations or reactions it might be 14-15-16 april.

Of course, you guys will be getting first picks. But if the interest is low I will invite all Dutch and German members over too.

Plans currently are to make this a nice weekend with some room for driving, activity,... It will also offer the possibility to start either the friday or the saturday. If you plan on making this your holiday I suggest instead of leaving the sunday you can use this event as a starter for a one-week trip. Luxembourg, France, Holland, Germany,... I will post a new thread with suggestions and polls as soon as I have the practical info on my desk.
