In the new storm season we got to D for Denis now we've gone to J for Jorge. Do all storms get a name even if they don't affect us?

They get the name from whichever country is first affected and the convention is that every other country's Meteorological service take the name.

In this case it was Spain who named it, thus Jorge.

So all severe storms do get a name even if a particular country is unaffected as you suggest.

Thanks Pete, so if we get to name the next one that comes our way, do we revert to alphabetical order ie E or will we follow Spain's J ie K?

I think we follow Spain's Jorge and go to K,

It depends if there are any in between that hit and get named by say, France or Ireland first I suppose

So does this apply to storms that don't hit us?, say Jorge had not hit the UK - we still have to use K,

Or would our next storm not be a J? Because we ducked Jorge?
