Mainly documentaries that are unavailable elsewhere, camper conversion videos (usually verging on the unwatchable!). Oh and drag queens, obviously.

I read that initially as "camper conversation" videos laugh

Yes, sometimes watchable for a very short time until they are removed....for whatever reason

Mostly music videos - stuff that’s not available elsewhere: live, cover versions, or both.

Occasional technical “how to” videos. You seem to be able to find how to do almost anything.

Bit of racing stuff. Oh, and some of Simon Sinek’s stuff too.

Actual channels: AvE , Big Clive, JayEmm on cars.

Otherwise loads of random music, movie, history, engineering, retro 8/16 bit computer related stuff.

Between that and usenet downloads I haven't watched broadcast TV for years and don't miss it at all.

Before the plague hit I used to swap a USB stick with maybe 100GB or so of video/music stuff with a mate every month, so we kinda made our own TV channel. smile

Not much from me on Youtube, but Project Binky is one that I watch when a new update comes out. it's about 2 guys fitting a Toyota Celica GT4 engine and running gear into an original mini.

Harry's Garage is the best car review site in my opinion. Also really enjoying Ian Tyrrells workshop - generally exotic Italian cars but some other content that is interesting. Retropower is worth watching to see the skills they have, and the ideas, would be interested to see what they might do to a Coupe. I watch some work related stuff and also quite a lot to try and understand what is happening in this crazy world at the moment.

Sam, if I understand you're paying for Premium Youtube (?) you can simply stop ads - which I also detest - by signing in to a/your google account and setting ads preferences, also Youtube preferences. I watch it this way completely ad-free.

I would guess you know this already!

Do you have an adblocker?

You can install an adblocker (I use uBlock Origin) to block youtube adds. Seems to work fine and I don't have a google or youtube account.

Or try the"Brave" browser, has adblock built in. It also has the option of TOR browsing built in, very useful if you like browsing with internet privacy like we used to have back in the 90's. smile

I use AdBlock Plus.

I wonder if anyone saw the Charlie Brooker series "Black Mirror" - there was an episode about a chap who lived in a small cubicle and was obliged to watch ads on his TV screen walls...

That's very interesting, thanks Graham. I hadn't come across this virtuoso and the fascinating light collages accompanying his videos - they're reminiscent of Rowan Atkinson's classic (from Not the Nine o'Clock News?) of the very same Beethoven piece with him wearing white gloves and everything else blacked out laugh Mind you that was a brilliant parody rather than a pro playing.

What this chap lacks in subtlety though is well matched by his accuracy and strong rhythmic drive, and his cadenza in the 2nd Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody is terrific.

Ah, the Satie...an extraordinary piece from an extraordinary chap. Playable by people of modest ability too which helps to make it so accessible.

Went to his house in Honfleur, Normandy a few years back - it was Dali-esque.

Gymnopédie No.1? Possibly the most boring, irritating piece of alleged music ever committed.

Its a bit (ALOT) overdone, but I don't find it that annoying, if its playing in the background while i work i dont go and find the nearest audio device and launch it out the window

There are actually very few singers I take the trouble to listen to, tbh Paul, but my "taste" is er, well my job so I guess the two are pretty intertwined. But I have been drawn to certain types of voice such as Kathleen Ferrier, some Russian vocalists, also the likes of Petula Clark and Lou Rawls, oh and Nat King Cole cool

I've always been fascinated by collaborations between two genres - you might remember the great jazz violinist Stephane Grapelli with whom Yehudi Menuhin went into brief partnership. Having had pianists who are involved in light music or improvising come for lessons because they feel somehow guilty, less able or just that they aren't doing it "properly", there is no doubt in my mind that a sort of envy exists between musical types, but unjustifiably so. It implies that one form of music is better than another which I'm not prepared to accept. When you think of the popular appeal and connection non-classical music creates I don't know how one (without becoming a snob basically) can argue for a table of merit.

What floats one's boat however is entirely different!

It is heartening though to witness the respect for each other's qualities in performances such as the one you directed me to - I found it interesting but unlikely to draw me into repeat viewing.....however I have been known, as might have been divulged elsewhere, to ferret around in some heavy metal (no Dad, it's ROCK music, my eldest lad insists laugh ) in more recent years, which has shown me an extra dimension of understanding and enjoyment regarding rhythm - I find it useful when offering descriptions to students even if it only makes the lesson a tad more interesting!
