I had to deliver a letter to Bournemouth around 40 miles away, thought i'd give the coop a spin. There's no motorway in Dorset and few stretches of dual carriageway though this trip offers one of the longest bits, as soon as I got to it I automatically started accelerating without much thought, i realised I was slowly catching a navy blue Volvo estate which must have been doing 80 ish in the outside lane. As i got closer it didn't pull over and I stayed behind for a minute or so, I glanced in the mirror and there was a navy blue Volvo estate right behind me. The police here use a lot of unmarked Volvos so I waited for the dreaded blue light to flash but would it come from in front or behind or both? After a while the one in front pulled over, discretion advised I followed suit at which point the one behind flashed by at what must have been 3 figure speeds, which assured me it wasn't a police car so merrily followed.
It was an uncomfortable moment totting up what the penalty might be for for such speed, thankfully the one in front had slowed me a little so the penalty was dropping by the time the other arrived! Ironically when going through Bournemouth, a notoriousplace for speeding tickets, I was overtaken by an unmarked VW T6 van with blues and twos.

Careful with stories like this, the school prefect will likely be along shortly to admonish because you mentioned a speed over 70mph on a UK road.

Sadly part of the reason its so quiet on here frown

In 1973 we drove a Ford Granada from County Durham to Barnstaple, Devon at an average speed of 70.8mph.
I remember passing a police panda car just south of Birmingham at 115mph. As we were slowing.

I suspect many of us have similar tales to tell regarding speeding, with or without the involvement of plod, i know I do. However I have no desire to share as I'm well past the age of pub bragging rights and quiet frankly for me, its boring.

My point is that if someone starts a thread and the discussion is not specifically about speeding but just happens to mention a speed over the limits on a public road the poster is / has been admonished and asked to edit their post. It's a pity as we all speed from time to time, its inevitable if you drive a Coupe the way it was intended. The issue is the 'Chilling Effect' it has on a forum, people stop posting as they just can't be bothered with the school prefect approach - you can see it here, the only posts are technical issues, there is no banter by any owners who are not 'forum fossils'

Perhaps this policy has changed, I hope so. Perhaps this tread staying up unmodified and you as a club rep/mod adding to it is evidence of that.

I think that anyone posted damn right crazy antics on any forum runs the risk of the law catching up with them eventually, either via their online commentary or by being caught in the act

I’ve been on and off the forum for 20 years or so and I do remember some of the stuff that went on, some was good reading and some of it simply wasn’t

I do agree that in a world of speed cameras and ever changing road speeds you can end up driving around looking at your speedo and not actually driving

I can say that as a Coupe enthusiast who drives both on the track and the road, that for me driving on the road has to be according to the conditions around you. But have I exceeded the limits, the honest answer is yes on occasion, and anyone who says they’ve never done it is simply not being honest with themselves

So I’d say driving stories that we can all relate to in our time in possession of a license that aren’t damn right stupid do have a place in the forum, if nothing else but to have a bit of banter

Cheers Jamie
