As title, on the M11 yesterday in a pothole - £400 of tyres - still don’t know if the wheels are OK - otherwise it might be a £1000 problem.

I’ve contacted the Highways Agency to see if I can claim.

That sounds dangerous as well as expensive! Did the tyres lose pressure straight away?

During my Alfa 166 ownership period I lost three wheels and a few low profile tyres to pot hole damage.

When I bought my first A5 fitted with 19's and ultra low profile tyres I decided to search for a set of 17 inch wheels, shod in winter tyres. I found a full set for £350, with almost new tyres, and have run those wheels on both the old car and the current car for the last three years.

So impressed was I with how the super thick sidewalls eat up the holes in the road, and the levels of winter grip, that I did the same on Mrs BB's TT too.

No - fortunately not. In fact, the front tyre has only lost a bit of pressure despite looking a right mess. The rear has slowly gone flat which I hope isn’t due to a cracked wheel. The side wall is bulging though.

Would have been catastrophic on a motorbike.

Yup - I’ve been running 16” wheels and cross-climate tyres on the E-Class rather than the 18” wheels. Not least because the house in Cambridge has a crappy kerb by the drive. It’s a more comfortable ride.

Both nearside wheels are buckled - not too bad but noticeable. No cracks.

Just checked - £1400 worth of wheels plus £400 of tyres.

Similar experience a couple of weeks back but on the A1 a little further up, no tyre damage but wheel buckled. Got lucky I suppose in that I didn’t lose pressure but had a £90 bill to have it straightened.

Finally got paid for (some of) the tyres - £321 of £401 - on the basis of wear.

They’ve only now asked for more evidence of the wheel damage. Guess I’m going to have to get my dial gauge out.

That's shocking shocked We're all coming to live with potholes unfortunately but don't expect this on a motorway! Hope you get more recompense in due course.
