filler cap neck seal

filler cap neck seal - 08/05/2016 15:22

I'm sure I read on here only a few weeks ago that someone replaced the seal on their filler cap, but I can't find the post... trying without success to locate a replacement.

At the moment, there's a temporary 40mmx4mm o-ring on, which seems better than the original, but a proper replacement would be nice.

Any pointers?

It's this one Neil.

I subsequently found that the circular seal between the 16 valve engine camshaft cover and the plug holes in the head is a perfect fit too.

When my coupe had an MOT advisory for this, I bought a universal cap for a Volvo S80(I think) and used the seal from that as it seems identical to the original, it's been ok for a couple of years now.
I've just tried searching for a link and come across this which looks like the offending article.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-S60-S80-V60-V70-XC60-XC70-XC-Petrol-Fuel-Cap-Washer-40x52x6mm-/291602712081?hash=item43e4e04611:m:meUM-XaVFRlU1MCyzw8yQVg

Hope this helps

Re: filler cap neck seal - 08/05/2016 20:28

Thanks Pete - same size (within experimental error) as the o-ring I found, then.

Alex, good call - ordered one. The snag with the o-ring is that it's a hardish plastic, while the proper shape gets softer at the outer edge where it meets the neck.

After purchasing, I was led via the 'other people looked at' to the FuelShark! - just plug it into the accessory socket and start saving fuel.

I mean, it *must* work, right? 10 to 30% - what's not to like? shocked

Replacement arrived; it's a drop in replacement and an exact fit. It's sold for the Volvo S60, S80, V60, V70, XC60, CX70 - dimensions 40x52x6mm, possibly part number 291602712081

Re: filler cap neck seal - 10/05/2016 18:59

Excellent news, it's nice you can now get the seal separately instead of having to buy the whole cap.
As I said, mine has been on for a couple of years now and still looks new so hopefully a good long term fix thumb

Well, the one I took off took over twenty years to die smile

Thanks for that, Alex!

Just to add some more detail to this thread.

These fuel filler cap washers are ebay part no: 300722622065 (thanks to Sir CountryCruising for this tit bit)
And supplied by Sprint Manufacturing - their part code: J008.

They are an absolute direct replacement for the Coupe, hopefully the picture here illustrate this?

And you can see the difference in thickness between an old one and new one!

The old one (on the left) is from my 1997 Coupe and still offered a good "pssstt" seal, but comparing the two I can see how aged and hard its become. Conversly the one on my 2000 Plus, is falling apart and crumbly and did not "pssstt" seal!! Now that I know these are a perfect fit, I'll order another one up. Delivery was unbelieveable, I ordered on Friday and arrived next day!

HTH,

Regards

IMHO using the money to buy fuel instead of a fuel shark will probably be the only way you will get more miles for the money!

Interestingly the Ebay link for the volvo listing has over 100 sold and 0 available. So I googled the above part number, 300722622065, it comes up with links to the same Ebay seller, and a listing for fuel filler seal for Triumph motorcycles, 57 sold, more than 10 available. Mine should arrive between Nov 24 and Dec 1.

Aye, but it's got to go a long way, Grigio. Did he say which year? (grin, duck, run...)

I've ordered one of these too as I'm sure my seal is cracked in multiple places.

Saw this and ordered one....fits perfect and helps the ‘action’ of the fuel cap. Makes it feel solid when shutting. Great find!!

I ordered a CAS from Sydney last weekend, it was $20 more expensive than one from the UK, but I figured it would turn up sooner. After completing the Ebay transaction I got an email with a delivery estimate the same as if I'd bought the UK item. Living in paradise has the occasional downside.

Nice spot this, thanks. Must be the quickest, easiest, cheapest fix in coupe history so worth doing as preventative maintenance. smile

Re: filler cap neck seal - 30/11/2017 08:51

Ordering today as TRS has failed the "hisss" test.

Is this just a pull the old one off, put the new one in place re-fit?

Looks suspiciously too easy to fit for a coupe replacement part- without any need for a specific anti-directional, metric reverse possi-drive star lined ratchet?

Regards

No problem Joe,

We were rather busy with Mr Mouse as you may recall - thanks for spotting and rectifying....didn't fancy the ASB going off line just when it may have been needed!

I use a screw driver to lever it out but yes, nice and easy!

Re: filler cap neck seal - 01/12/2017 17:48

Cheers Gunzi!

I guess I was being too suspicious of the fuel cap...after it locked shut and wouldn't open on me a few months ago.

I'll take nice and easy then- it will be fitted in the morning!

Cheers
