cannot insert a thermostat into top hose - 04/03/2018 15:59
I decided to start a new thread on this because my previous one has run its course. Because a replacement thermostat is unnavailable for the 16V four cyl 2.0L non turbo, I have been trying to insert a Renault 5 thermostat into the top hose as advised by other members. It does work well but there is a problem: no matter how I try, I cannot insert the stat any further than the widened portion of the hose. This works, but it does mean that the hose cannot sit as well as it should onto the engine and I am afraid that the hose clamp is not getting enough purchase and may come off.
Has anyone managed to push the stat further down the hose?

thanks
do you happen to know the diameter of the Rover 75 in line stat used?.
I ask because the Renault 5 stat I have is impossible to insert into the hose.

The bespoke (previously used for Rover engines) housing fits perfectly into the hose and has a diameter of 33.5mm, but basically just smaller than the internal diameter of the hose itself at 35mm.

well finally I have completed the mod. I used the 'Rover' stat, cut the hose from the engine and used a modified Renault top hose from the new stat to the radiator. It all loooks good and seems to work. The stat opens at about 110°C and then drops back to around 90°.
I can't see here how to attach photos but if anyone wants a picture, let me have your email.
cheers

Interesting temps Geoff - but hopefully does the job for you.
If not give me a shout and I'll put you in touch with the company who built my unit.
