Air con compressor seal kit

Air con compressor seal kit - 05/04/2018 22:46

The air conditioner compressor on my 20VT has leaky seals. Living in the sub tropics, this is a bit of an issue even though we are heading towards winter.

Does anyone know of a supplier for a seal kit? Some initial googling has failed to turn up anything useful apart from one supplier that can apparently source a new compressor for over £300 (!).

Any suggestions?

Don't bother buying the seal kit shown on ePer, it's just a random collection of too many O rings of which very few, if any, fit. Just go to an A/C specialist and get them to supply the correct sizes from their extensive stock. I've listed the sizes somewhere on the forum. But yes, new compressors are about that amount, hopefully you won't need one. Best to get system evacuated then regassed including fluorescent dye and look for leaks with UV light. Can also use a "sniffer" (bit like a geiger counter) but I've seen those detecting gas even laying on the ground in fresh air.

Thanks for the info Dave. It was an AC specialist I went to here in Brisbane, however he didn't have the correct seals and couldn't find the compressor listed in his parts catalogues despite several other similar Denso units appearing. It would seem this kind of compressor was never fitted to any Australian delivered vehicle, hence I think I will need to source these from the UK or Europe unfortunately.

Hi Boosted,

I have been looking for the compressor repair kit for a long time now and finally found the parts needed about 2 weeks ago in Spain. I am currently in Spain for about a month and the place is only a few miles away. Very lucky there.

The seal and the gasket kit should be a few quid, but it is quite expensive, but there is no other option that I could find.

Can you PM me your email address and I will send you the details and links to the part numbers. If you have any issue with the Spanish company not wanting to post the items to you let me know and I will collect them and post to you.

I had considered seeing if I can get a discount for 10 x kits and repair compressors for people on the forum if mine goes OK.

Have a read of this thread and that thread and this one too if you haven't seen them already

Re: Air con compressor seal kit - 06/04/2018 06:40

Thanks Dave,

The A/C is always an issue. Not really big enough for the car either.

I have 4 or 5 non working compressors now so have been looking for the seal and gasket kit for a while.
Now that I finally have them I just need to fit them. The compressor is actually quite basic inside so its not a difficult job. The hardest part is getting the clutch off without damaging it as I dont have the correct tool.

It will be sometime in May or June before I get around to fitting the seal and gasket though so will not be able to give any feedback until then.

It's the seal on top of the compressor at the high pressure manifold that seems to leak and it's the one that's hard to source, as mentioned on my thread Dave linked above:

https://fiatcoupeclub.org/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1483980

I re-used the old one that time and it was OK for a while, but did start leaking again within a few months.

Eventually I managed to find a supplier of the correct seal (green HNBR @ 23mm x 2mm) in China but I had to order a 100 pack! My compressor has been fine since replacing that seal and obviously I have a load of them left so if anyone needs one just drop me a PM.

Coincidentally another guy in Brisbane (Gary687 on here) asked me about this a few weeks ago, so if you contact him he should be able to give you one as I sent him a few spares just in case anyone else "down under" ever needed one.

Well done all. I can see a group buy coming on for a seal kit ! thumb Good luck Ant - you want to stay "looking cool" in the Coupe.

When I had my "evacuation" and regas, it was done by a local mobile guy and he had a load of seals with him - though these were used on the condenser, drier and pipe connections - and we left the compressor alone. My A/C has a slow leak from somewhere - could well be the compressor, so a new seal kit would be ideal.

As for the performance, after the regas, it was easily achieving 5C at the vent, with a 25C outside temp. Pity it didn't last.

Hi Guys.

As I've just sold my E-type I reckon I can now afford to get my non-working A/C going. Just by looking at its ratty condition the rad looks like it probably shot. Where is the best place to go for a replacement condensing radiator or is it much of a muchness? Is there a brand to look for or ones to avoid?
Also, the compressor may or may not be good, I don't know, but it certainly needs a very good clean and polish. Is it worth taking off to be checked on the bench, it could then also be made to look like new, or is it best to leave in situ for a technician to test?

Avoid the cheap serpentine style condensers, try to get the thinner (16mm rather than 25mm) parallel, aluminium style like the original.

NRF part # 35185 seems to be the cheapest (maybe only) proper replacement that's still available. They still had a few left in the Netherlands when I got one last year, they ship direct from there unless you're very lucky and find stock in the UK.

Thanks Graham. Have you got a name of the supplier in NL?

Re: Air con compressor seal kit - 14/05/2018 10:28

I have found NRF #3518 here: eBay item number:122957002863
The dimension of the distance from the top holes and the bottoms is 390mm and the actual on my original (with OEM number 60630383 on it) is 402mm and on the part compatibility checker it says it is not compatible with Fiat Coupe 20vt - so now I'm not sure.

Re: Air con compressor seal kit - 14/05/2018 10:58

I have now ordered a Hella eBay item number:273103543377 & I've asked the supplier and they say is good for Fiat #60630383 and it's from the UK - £98 all in. Perhaps the dimension difference is more to do with having a non-original radiator which means the condenser has stretched a bit to fit, plus it's not so easy to measure.

Slight change of plan, I'm looking for a new AC compressor now too. Can anyone recommend a supplier?

GrahamL sent me a couple of these (many thanks), but I haven't done anything about fitting yet. I've just had the a/c looked at and was told it was the two connections to the compressor that had a slight leak and they 'nipped them up' to get the system working, which it is now (at least for the time being). However here is the photo from the compressor as recommended by Rob40 and this shows the two connector holes as 18.4mm and 14.6mm so where do the 22mm seals go then?

Re: Air con compressor seal kit - 18/05/2019 11:23

The 23x2mm seal fits below the 15.6mm connection at the high pressure side, top right of the pic. You can see that the 15.6mm part is a bolt on "adapter", when you remove the adapter from the top of the compressor you'll see the 23mm seal below (at the thin black line just below where the arrow is pointing at the compressor). That's where it leaks, but if you don't know there's a seal under there it looks like the 15.6mm high pressure port seal is leaking 'cause the leak detection dye will be around the high pressure port. It looks like the leak is between the pipe and the adapter part the pipe fits into, but it's actually between the bolt on adapter and the top of the compressor.

Re: Air con compressor seal kit - 20/05/2019 19:42

Thank you Graham, that has clarified the 22x2 seal. However, I was looking at a post from DaveG where he said the following:

"There are 3 each of 3 sizes used [going from compressor inlet to condenser, drier, cabin evaporator and back to compressor]: Small (7 x 1.5) Medium (11 x 2) and Large (14 x 2).
L compressor inlet via connection on drier to cabin
M compressor outlet to condenser"

These seal sizes are surely too small to go between the adaptor and the hose, so where do they go?
