Engine number

Hi

Where do I find the engine number?
The manual says: Stamped on the cylinderblock/crankcase near the starter motor.

But on my engine there is nothing (or so greasy so I can't find it.)

Can anyone give me a hint where to look for it

If it's a 20v/t coupe, then:

Nicely illustrated, Graham.

If it's a 16v, forget it... the number is stamped into the block on the front balance bar housing, nicely concealed below the oil collector and all the exhaust plumbing.

And almost certainly illegible through rust even if you can get to it.
