DIY undertray?

DIY undertray? - 29/10/2017 15:03

My coupe's without an undertray and they appear to be quite rare now as a part. Has anyone fabricated their own - not the full monty - but enough to cover the belts and if so what material was used? As MGR came under financial pressure they axed the full tray in favour of a shortened version to cover the vitals as a cost cutting exercise and I reckon something similar could be possible for the coupe?

Get in touch with Joe (Countrycruising) at FCSS, he may have one.

A very important protection for your horses smile

On the 16V, there isn't much of an undertray, just the first foot or so back from the bumper.

I had to get creative with fibreglass to repair mine, but then, I did use to take my coupe off-road and across farm tracks, which rather wore the corners off it...

Thanks Neil. I was thinking that I didn't need the full kit as per the 20v/t. I assume that Fiat thought there was more to protect with the more powerful cars then?

That's not a 16 undertray, Raumklang. It *might* fit but the shape is rather different.

Might be quite easy to make one out of plastic, aluminium or even plywood as these guys suggest....

Thanks guys for the updates. 35e is not bad for the undertray that could be adapted to fit the 16v plus all the fixings should marry up to the bumper. Unfortunately they don't ship to the UK - BREXIT strikes early.. crazy wink

Here was my first attempt.
Very easy to make a tray for the 16V NA.
The latest version goes back a bit further and does away with the tie down eye and hole in the tray.

Re: DIY undertray? - 03/11/2017 07:05

Aluminum, 3mm sheet,
Its bolted to the bumper with captive nuts. I used 2 "L" shaped pieces, riveted to form a box, as a support under the radiator lower mounts. The tray is bolted to these to provide extra support. The idea behind the "box" support was to allow it to deform if there was any contact with speed bumps or the like, rather than damage the rad ot its mount. So far its all good.
