Yet more forum power; recommend me a mattress - 30/05/2018 09:03

Have developed a bad back over the last few weeks and the chiropractor I saw recommended looking into a new mattress.

This makes sense as our current mattress we’ve had for probably 9 years and it was gifted to us by a family member at the time.

I don’t really know where to start but I’ve seen loads of adverts for companies offering 100 night money-back trials which seems like a pretty good idea. Casper, Eve and Simba are among a few companies I’ve seen with this same type of pitch and their King Soze mattresses all seem to be in the £500-1000 range, which is what we had in mind.

Has anyone tried something like this, or are their any other recommendations around this sort of price?

We just spent £1200 at John Lewis for a super-king size - 2000 * 1800 from memory. It replaced one at least twenty years old and the difference is, <cough> night and day... no moneyback if we don't like it, though smile

I wouldn't touch a memory foam mattress - too many people I know where it's remembered holes and saggy bits in sloping edges in far too short a time.

And to be honest - how is a money back if you don't like it going to work? You've presumably already got rid of the old mattress...

I'm in a similar boat as you: bad back, currently looking for a new mattress. I can't really offer any advice or recommendation per se because the more I've looked into it the more confused I've become and have yet to take the plunge.

However it might be worth flagging some of the issues that I've come across on the journey of scouring the internet for info & reviews.

1) As per Barnacle's advice the general thinking on memory foam casper, emma, eve, simba et al have very mixed reviews. Seem good at first, but more concerning later. I think the jury is out regarding longevity.
And the 100 day trial seems to have come in for lots of criticism. Worth reading the small print as apparently some require you to repack in the same packaging which it came in. Considering they are vacuum packed this seems to be sailing close to the wind as far as unfair contract terms goes.

2) There's lots of newspaper comparison reviews on the internet - independent, guardian etc. all with articles such as top 10 for 2018. On the back of these I looked into the premier inn and other luxury hotel chain matresses which come highly rated - on the thought process that commercial use must be better quality. It's probably true to an extent, but again there are mixed reviews.

3) finally I came across the following website, which seems to be far more honest that some of the big brands and are prepared to reveal the actual construction and materials they use - unlike all of the big brand manufacturers. Plus they seem competitively priced. Worth taking a look as you really need to choose depending on how much you weigh etc.

https://johnryanbydesign.co.uk/product/origins-pocket-1500/
(you need to scroll down as the techy advice bit is down the webpage.

4) last bit of unsolicited advice (sorry, can't help myself) is get a copy of the 'back mechanic' off amazon. There are 3-4 key exercises to do, but more importantly a whole load more to never ever do again - like sit ups.

Let me know which one you go for as it might persuade me to get on and decide.

We got a good pocket sprung mattress. Not that expensive either and it's excellent. Was from Dreams. 1000pocket springs per king size.

Tried memory foam and not keen on the feeling of sinking into it. It's also too warm at times.

If you've ever stayed in a Premier Inn and like their Hypnos mattresses, then you can buy them :

https://www.premierinn.com/gb/en/why/sleep/buy-our-bed.html?

Also, if you haven't slept on one before, the good thing is that you can book a room for the night and sleep on it first to see what it's like laugh

I think this is the one we bought. Bloody typical, they've dropped the price since we did...

Thanks all.

Interesting points raised about memory foam. These new breed of mattresses all seem to have hundreds of 5 star reviews, but there’s no word on whether those people are reviewing after having spent a couple of years living with the thing. I expect that all new mattresses are comfortable to begin with.

Interesting too about be Premier Inn mattress. At £525 it seems good value for a king size. Pretty sure I stayed at a Premier Inn on a stopover on the way to Scotland a couple of years ago. Can’t say that the night’s sleep was all that memorable but then perhaps that’s a glowing review.

As above hated memory foam too hot in the summer and the Mr's and i would roll into one another in the middle or fell like we would fall out if too close to the edge!
We now have a matres from Dreams cannot remember the price but it was nearer to £1000 than £500, was rated no 5 for hardness the highest level, in my opinion its just a bit too hard and i wish i went for the No 4 firmness
I think weight would have a huge bearing on the type of matres suits the individual also
Its Not an easy choice but your past experience with what type of matres you have had should help

It's definitely worth reading some of the articles on the website I recommended if you're interested in the Premier Inn one. I think you can get the same / better for less. The site carried out their own review on the Premier Inn mattress:-

https://johnryanbydesign.co.uk/understanding-beds/premier-inn-mattress-review-alternatives/

They've also got posted some interesting articles explaining who are the manufacturers behind some of the brand names and how they cut corners and weight guides:

I got a Hypnos mattress 10+ years ago from John Lewis, it's been brilliant and still is

I have two Super King pocket sprung mattresses, both just topped with memory foam. This system is fantastic and both are equally comfortable. The Next mattress was only about £700, less than half the Hypnos one.

You can pay anything from under a hundred quid to a king's ransom for a mattress. It seems that there are only a couple of manufacturers in the mid-range mass market, but they have a plethora of brands.

MrsC suffers from an intermittently terrible back and we have tried many different solutions. What we have ended up with (which is reasonably effective) is a pretty firm £500 mattress plus a £120 memory foam mattress topper from Ikea.

The mattress itself remains in more or less as new condition and we can get a new (softer or firmer) mattress topper as the need arises.

These people make excellent mattresses - https://www.harrisonspinks.co.uk/ - it is possible the John Lewis ones people have recommended are made by Harrison Spinks as they are a supplier to them. And I love the fact they have there own farm to grow matresses (or at least, the materials to make them!).

IT's true, mattresses are grown. They're kinda like one of those huge pumpkins, but grown in a frame to get them the right shape.

I think.

Thanks all.

We went to Dreams and opted for a combination mattress (Henley 1000, if anyone’s interested).

The guys at the shop were very helpful and informative but basically said it’s just down to personal preference.

We’ve been sleeping on it a few nights now and it’s very comfortable. Of course it could just be that any new mattress would be comfortable next to our old one but we’re pretty happy with it.

Thanks again for all the replies.
