AutoItalia at Brooklands May 5th 2018

AutoItalia at Brooklands May 5th 2018 - 02/02/2018 12:06

I have been speaking to Phil Ward about the event this year.

He assures me that the entry issues we had last year have been addressed and should not recur.

Much of the museum refurbishment work is completed so space will not be an issue - for example the finishing straight has reopened and been extended.

I have asked for a block of 30 spaces to be reserved for coupes.

The emphasis for this year's track demos is classics. Speak to Phil directly if you are interested.

Re: AutoItalia at Brooklands May 5th 2018 - 03/02/2018 21:35

There is a "secret" entrance to the site off Brooklands Drive, up near the Mercedes Benz world. We stumbled upon this entrance the year before last and managed to sneak in with a select group of Ferrari owners. The guys on the gate tried to block us from coming in after treating the Ferrari guys like VIPs... I'm sure this had nothing to with the fact we were driving old Fiats rolleyes

Hopefully they can sort themselves out this year. In previous years this has always been a great event. Have fun everyone.

Hi sorry to sound daft but is this just put your name down and turn up. I'm re-emerging from quite a few years of non Coupe activity, have just done a partial restore on my Ink Black 20VT and would like to get involved again now she's all up and running and looking good! I now nothing about this event but would be interested in participating.

Re: AutoItalia at Brooklands May 5th 2018 - 22/02/2018 12:55

Yes, just put your name down and turn up.

You can just pay on the gate but it is cheaper if you buy tickets in advance and it may be quicker entry on the day.

Here's a link.

Re: AutoItalia at Brooklands May 5th 2018 - 14/03/2018 09:40

Just to be clear (from those who have been before), I'm taking other with me but don't want to pay for them upfront in case the cancel, so I can just turn up as pay on the gate on the day right. The website says if the museum get full you have to go off an used a park and ride etc. So how will they know I have a reserved space? is someone going to create some sort of pass from here?
Posted By: PeteP

Re: AutoItalia at Brooklands May 5th 2018 - 14/03/2018 10:42

Just go, They won't cancel the event and even if they did you would be refunded by Brooklands Museum Trust.

It will be slower to get in if you pay at the gate, but then that is your choice.

The marshals will direct you to the area reserved for the coupes. They know what coupes look like!

If you arrive so late that there is no room in the museum grounds you will be directed to an overflow car park next door which is just a short walk to the entrance.

Re: AutoItalia at Brooklands May 5th 2018 - 14/03/2018 10:55

No I meant if my friends cancel wanting to come I didn't want to buy their tickets upfront for nothing. OK well I have put my name down on the list here so I will be there. Be good to have some 3D Coupe chat.

Re: AutoItalia at Brooklands May 5th 2018 - 14/03/2018 12:50

Ah, I follow you now James.

It will just be a little slower getting in as they say they will have a separate lane for cars with prepaid tickets.

See you with the others at the top end of the finishing straight then.

I'm coming with the father and father in law, already put my name down but just want to doubly check as it's my first time...

So you just arrive at this entrance, pay on the gate and someone will direct you where to go simply by recognising your make of car. Or do I literally have to say "I'm in a Fiat Coupe and I have a space reserved with all the other Fiat Coupe's, where do I go please?"

Looking forward to it anyway, weather looks to be good (ish).

I'll be there but not with a coupé...

Been frantically trying to find a tool to get the locking wheel nuts off today but no luck. So I've ordered a tool.

Don't fancy chancing it with no way to get the wheel off if, in the unlikely event of a puncture. I just know my luck though. So we'll be coming topless. If you see a white TT roadster with some pink headed bloke driving it could be me... give us a toot smile

Re: AutoItalia at Brooklands May 5th 2018 - 05/05/2018 14:03

I was a bit miffed not to have been taking the Coupé today. But when I saw where everyone was parked I was glad I hadn't frown Also glad that I didn't take in our chairs and stuff. None of the coupés were parked together so no real focal point or chance for everyone to meet.

The event also seemed far too over sold and there were far too many modern / brand new Lambo's and Ferrari's, many keen to let everyone hear their motors bouncing off the limiter.

For me the beauty of this event has always the balance between classic and modern cars, today there was little balance. Modern Exotica had pride of place, with most classics stuck out the back.

I won't be gong again frown

Re: AutoItalia at Brooklands May 5th 2018 - 05/05/2018 14:52

Agree - disappointed not to be parked with the other Coupes. Despite getting there at 9:30 I was down towards the end.

Everything seemed to be rather mixed up our allocated area - the event is still rather chaotic generally.

Managed to speak to a couple of members though.

Re: AutoItalia at Brooklands May 5th 2018 - 05/05/2018 16:42

I used to really like Brooklands, it along with Stanford hall were two of my favourite meets each year. We were usually granted a reasonable, if not great, spot and thus it used to be one of the best attended meets by Fiat coupé owners, often pulling close to 40 Coupés.

When the weather forecast was poor we still turned out and one year even managed to get space in the now Ferrari only parking area.

In recent years I have much preferred the Brands Hatch event, just a shame that has limited spaces frown

Today was not all wasted though - on the way out we spotted a Porsche dealership and Trish got to have her first look at a Boxter, though sadly they didn't have a 718.

Re: AutoItalia at Brooklands May 5th 2018 - 05/05/2018 16:46

I am a little sore I couldn't make it this year but sounds like it was a bit disappointing.
As good a place as brooklands is I can't understand the logic of continuing to host the event there. It has far outgrown the site and the marshals seem to have lost all ability to controll the volume of vehicles. And for What? A whole hour of the MBW track.
They could do so much better taking the event to a race track and having someone like javelin run a track day at the same time. You could have the standard show but with proper track action going on all day.

Re: AutoItalia at Brooklands May 5th 2018 - 05/05/2018 17:50

What is going on with this event? Did not go this year and it sounds like the issues experienced last year have got even worse; I think the organiser needs to think about what AutoItalia at Brooklands has now become for the many..... an expensive overcrowded car park. The treatment of FCCUK has appeared to be worse since he sold his Coupe :(, maybe that's just a coincidence. The great social event for FCCUK that it once was has lost it's way. I agree time for a different venue. AROC Alfa Day last year at Hever Castle was how it should be done.

Re: AutoItalia at Brooklands May 5th 2018 - 05/05/2018 19:19

To be honest I said the other day when I heard the coupes would be on the banked part of the old track somewhere, I knew you would be out of the way and mixed with all the other cars as thats always been like an overflow if you like. Years ago used to have a great spot with upto 50 Coupes all together. Each year has got worse for the Coupes unfortunately.

I went with my Dad and left his beautiful Plus at home as we expected this so came in the Audi and walked in equals no disappointment!

So all that aside, I say it was much better than last year when the place was a messy building site with rubbish weather. Today was very busy yes but the weather made if you ask me.
Also I think they got their act together a little more on the food side of things.

I enjoyed it.

P.S you want track action and organisation I recommend Festival Italia at Brands in August. Went last year and it was a stand out day for me and again the weather was perfect!

Re: AutoItalia at Brooklands May 5th 2018 - 05/05/2018 20:43

Guys it was good to meet a few of you but yeah it wasn't quite what I though it would be. The drive there and the sun were the best things unfortunately.

The plot we had was not great, to out of the way and how many modern Ferrari/Lambos do you need to see all at once??

Anyway not a bad day but doubt id go again. Pleased to blow the cobwebs out of my Coupe though, no traffic on M4 back to Bristol meant I seriously gave it some!

Get yourselves to the Silverstone Classic this year. A few of us are already going (see events).

Yes, a bit expensive but, it's well organised, food is ok, if your camping you can have a beer or three plus there's a lot of racing and the night entertainment is fantastic.

Just caught up with this somewhat belatedly !

We didn't go this year either as last year's was a bit of a shambles.

Sadly, I can only agree with all the comments here and unless it changes back to how it was for us as a club ie. a proper park-up spot, I doubt we'll go again.

Will give other shows a try.
Posted By: PeteP

Re: AutoItalia at Brooklands May 5th 2018 - 06/06/2018 19:36

The sad thing is it's not really AutoItalia's fault. I had previously spoken to them and they assured me that the problem would not happen this year.

They allocated sufficient space for us to be all together, but the Brooklands Museum marshals parked anything Fiat in our allocated space after the first 3 coupes had arrived.

I have to say that if it ain't expensive or its make begins with an A, then Brooklands staff don't appear to give a toss.
