Hi just bought a coupe 20v n/a.
It has LE 16'' wheels with 225. 45.16 Toyo tyres.
The tyres will soon need replacing and I find the ride harsh
Could I fit a larger profile tyre eg,225. 55.16 without any problems.
Thanks

Not sure if they would be ok as the 55 profile tyre is 1.7" bigger in diameter.
At the very least your speedo reading would be well out.

55 profile will scrub on the arches, if the rims are LE four spoke they should be fitted with 205/50/16 as they're a 7J rim, 225 is ideally for the Plus design 7.5J, that said that tyre size fit comfortable on the 7 but if you're finding the ride hash go for the 50 profile and run 2.3bar on the front, 2.2bar rear.

Am I right in thinking the original wheels were 15''.
If so then if I got hold of some genuine coupe 15'' wheels then I could loose the low profile tyres.
Thanks

Yes the 20v N/A are fitted with 15" rims, there were two designs for the n/a, VIS has the smarter blade design.

I have a set for sale with good tyres if interested.

VIS wheels with good tyres.

Not all of them. Some of the VIS have the original wheels and black strip along the sill.

But yeah, if you want the best ride quality possible then you need the 15" wheels.

Both 15" and 16" wheels were fitted with 205/50 tyres, so the sidewall is actually pretty much the same height. The original 15" wheels are not particularly light. The 20VT wheels might not actually be much different in weight - they don't feel much different to me. So the biggest hitter is going to be the quality of the tyre. Go for something known for refinement, say the Dunlop SportMaxx RT2, which is a very good tyre too. The other areas to watch are the drop links and the tracking. The NA is fine with 0 toe in/out. I find that mine rides best with normal pressures (2.5 Bar F / 2.2 Bar R). Any less and it bounces about. Other worn suspension components won't help but best start at the easy and low-cost end and see how it responds.

My na has 20VT 16"s fitted, with 205/50 Kumhos, which are both quiet and comfortable riding, makes a huge difference over the previous Pirellis.

The previous owner had fitted 205/55s, as they are cheaper and easier to get hold of, but they were a bit 'bouncy', as well as the speedo issue. I actually find the ride is better now.

I am using 17" TSW wheels with 215/45 tyres.
Speedo is right compared with a GPS gadget.
Maximum 5% error at low speed.

Same here. 215/45 r17 is in the end 2-3% bigger wheel combo, and offsets the stock small underreading of the speedo (compared to gps).
I've found that ride improved significantly when i switched from stock 225/45 r16 to non-factory size. Could be the slightly bigger wheel, lighter 17" alloys (-2kg compared to 16" 20vT Plus double spokes), and fresh tires with softer sidewall.
The bigger wheel scrubbed the front arch lining on full lock when I had new Goodyear Excellence tires, it stopped when they wore out. It didn't scrub when i fitted new Uniroyal Rainsport3.

I wrote all this because You wanted to fit higher profile tires = bigger wheel diameter combo. In my oppinion, 215/45 r17 is on the limit (scrubbing), so anything bigger will most likely cause issues. Keep in mind, not all tires of the nominally same dimensions (eg. 215/45) are exactly the same.

I use 205/45/17 and they are OK. Ride quality is good with standard springs and shocks. Speedo is spot on with these tyres.
