Doris is my first ever Coupe, so named due to the storm that was raging on the day I flew up to Scotland to view her. I was after a really low mileage Porto Blue car that I could perhaps spend some time (and money) on to return to her former glory.

I know they say never view a used car in the rain let alone a snowstorm, but I was seduced by her graceful curves and the sound of the 5 pot engine and risked a sketchy belt service history and the full force gales to drive her back to Leicester. She did this with ease given the few years she had been laid up prior to this.

She has just 36,000 miles on the clock which from records and history along with confirmation from letters sent to the two previous owners appears genuine. My timeline was to sort any mechanicals in year one, the eradication of all rust and body imperfections in year two, and a full respray and wheel refurb in year three at which point I would have a mint condition car to maintain over future years. I am a former aircraft technician so I figured I could put my tools to good use on most of the mechanical jobs, but I never learned how to weld.

I had a couple of weeks before she was booked in to see my local specialist JBT at Midlands car servicing, so drove her at every opportunity and visited a few of the other specialists.

Things I completed prior to visiting JBT:

1) Restore and polish fuel filler cap.
2) Replace the gas struts which hold the bonnet up as both were u/s via Joe at FCSS.
3) Sourced a pininferina badge to replace the o/s badge which was missing via Nigel at Motormech.
4) Sourced a set of good condition black leather seats via another forum member to replace the cloth ones, which although in as new condition are not leather...

The pics taken so far can be seen by clicking on the link.
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=...mp;l=14f356ad9e

The visit to JBT confimed my suspicions that there was indeed a 'bit of rust', but he also found a hole in the boot floor on the o/s side in the usual place which has scuppered my timeline as this placed more urgency on corrosion rectification. It made sense for him to also sort the pressing mechanical issues at the same time, so Doris is now with JBT until the middle of June to sort the following:

1) New rocker cover gasket- leaking
2) New thermostat- stuck open
3) New radiator- corrosion
4) Front and rear brake calipers - corrosion
5) All brake pipes and lines - corrosion
6) Buckled o/s rear wheel- on the inner side looks like a bad kerbing, ravine or similar!
7) All belts and tensioners change
8) Suspension bump stops- perished
9) Handbrake cables- u/s
10) Front wishbones
11) Track rod ends- play
12) Front and rear suspension struts, springs and dampers- corrosion
13) All sills- corrosion
14) Rear wheel arches - corrosion
15) O/s front wing and inner wheel arch - corrosion
16) Hole in boot floor

The work starts in May and there will no doubt be a few other nasties discovered as the strip down gets underway so will be posting pictures of all stages of the work as it goes along.

Several people have asked me if I have taken leave of my senses in relation to what they view as a 'rusty old Fiat' and my answer to them is probably one that all on here can relate to which is 'it's not any rusty old Fiat, it's a rusty Fiat Coupe!'

That's all for now
Ballypete

Ok its update time as JBT got the old girl into the garage for a strip down to better assess what corrosion rectification was required.I think the following pictures leave me in no doubt that there is some pretty major repair work required to get her solid again. if the original pictures of her shiny exterior were the good, here is the bad and the ugly...

This one is an 'interesting 6" hole in the n/s front

More images of bodywork corrosion to be rectified. The hole near the fuel filter requires a repair that will encompass a portion of the inner floor and inner cross section.

Apart from that the body is otherwise solid... biglaugh

So now onto the suspension, rolling gear and brake system. The first picture is titled 'someones bodged the compensator' Just before I purchased it the car had failed its mot due to the compensator and this had been changed to get the pass...

The radiator turned out to be more rusty on top than bottom but it's still getting replaced.

All to be replaced as part of the restoration work

Will also be turning my attention to the front end and the engine bay click to enlarge

Hoses still have the original fiat clips on and are being replaced including the CHOD which JBT tells me is a bitch on an NA. Belts and tensioners, possible water pump and definitely knackered thermostat being changed. the rocker cover gasket was leaking and will also be sorted.

Half a dozen shovel fulls of mud were removed from the underside and it looks like some of that mud made it into the coolant looking at the colour of the expansion tank. I have this at home with me to get sparkling clean.

Where possible metal parts will be sandblasted and cleaned along with treatment to slow down corrosion in the engine bay area on this visit. Then she will go back in the winter for a full front end strip and restoration to match the body and rear being done this time.

JBT is being as least intrusive into the exterior paint as he can be at this point, as the full respray is a couple of year away in my timeline.

JBT tackled the most complicated of the repairs today, the hole near the fuel filter housing that extended onto the inner floor and inner cross section.

He didn't need to cut into the firewall and managed to get an angle drill up into the chassis to clean the metal around it. Used 1mm plate triple clamped in paces for added strength. The last part was the most tricky as he wanted all the end pieces in one section. So jig made and then used a press to form the edges with fine cuts made until perfect fit achieved. click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge

Some good progress made by JBT today as follows:

All other bodywork repairs completed.Final repair to box section fabricated and welded in.

Rear springs, calipers, brake cables, compensator, flexi pipes, bump stops, all brake lines and front to rears done. I am going to look at a new or reconditioned subframe perhaps powder coated as part of future restoration work but that will do for now.

Interior and fuel tank refitted.

Tomorrow the mechanical work starts.

For my own part I have discovered that sugar soap with a little warm water melts the gunge in expansion tanks before your very eyes! click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge

Sugar soap, warm water and some sand. Fairly harmless in terms of chemicals to damage the plastic. Has come up pretty clean too. Was also thinking about trying bicarbonate of soda but didn't need to in the end. click to enlarge

A brief update today. JBT informs me that the car is now back together and all engine work and other mechanicals completed. Basically the car has all new undercarriage in terms of brakes, suspension and steering. Not much in the way of images for this bit yet but will post when I get them. Maiden voyage went like a charm and he says 'night and day difference' in how she now drives compared to before.

Doris is now at the bodyshop for paintwork required due to the corrosion rectification, but not a full respray at this stage.

The wheels are also getting a refurb as some of them were in a sorry state. One wheel was quite badly buckled so I managed to get a good quality replacement via Nigel at Motormech (2nd pic)

click to enlarge click to enlarge
The car had a different brand of tyre on each corner when I bought her, one Goodyear, one Falken, and two tyres that I have never heard of let alone be able to pronounce the names! After a good review of the subject on this forum I have settled for some Hankook Ventus V12 Evo's which would appear to offer a good all round balance to compliment my driving style and the fact she will always be garaged during the winter months.

Looking forward to getting her back now for hopeully a long hot summer of driving her around the country

Picked the car up yesterday and it really is like a different car to drive. The engine is more responsive and the ride is much improved due to the new suspension.

Spent today removing the cloth seats and putting a set of leather seats in which I had spent some time cleaning and repairing with gliptone liquid leather stuff. click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge

I also spent an hour or so in the engine bay but it looks like 19 years worth of grime is going to take a few goes to banish completely. It already looks better than before as the comparison pics hopefully show

click to enlarge click to enlarge

Restoration work will stop now for the rest of the summer so I can drive, drive, drive her. During the winter months she will be going back in for an engine out full front restoration to match the rest of the body.

Finally, I like my old faded Fiat badge on the back end- something about the faded blue/green that appeals to me

A little bit more work on Doris over the past few weeks- mainly cosmetic stuff. I have again attacked the engine bay with a selection of brushes and am maybe 20% towards the level of clean I would like. click to enlarge

Swapped out the old armrests with some leather ones I picked up for free via boosted7 on this forum click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge

I have also had a full refurb on the wheels, as there was a lot of kerb damage and general corrosion to sort out. I got this done via a company called The Wheel Specialist and think the result looks pretty good. click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge However they ignored my advice on the correct jacking points to use and I found this on the o/s front floor pan grr!! grr click to enlarge

Picked the damage up when having the drivers side engine mount changed as it had perished and was causing the most annoying squeak ever click to enlarge click to enlarge

finally picked up a new reg plate via the DVLA which basically says what it is on the tin biglaugh click to enlarge

Over the winter Doris has been in the safe hands of JBT for an engine in front end restoration. I was thankful that the front end didn't have as much corrosion as the rear...

The main work consisted of new slam panel, radiator support cross member, Eiffel towers both sides, bumper corner supports, corrosion rectification and paint.

Corrosion and Paint

That's pretty much it for this year I think. Future plans include reconditioning the rear subframe once the rear disc stone chip covers arrive, and maybe a new paint job at some point- although TBH the paint isn't too bad on the old girl. There is however a small bubble of what looks like corrosion on the N/S front bumper that will need to be sorted. Until next time...
