I could not help but feel sorry for Theresa May as she coughed and spluttered her way through her mediocre speech and the "F" fell off the wall. But I feel much more sorry for the sick, the disabled and the dying who have had a very raw deal since 2010. Roll on a Christmas general election!

P.S. Theresa May's advisers need sacking - didn't anyone notice she was wearing an image of Frida Kahlo on her wrist,a Mexican communist painter who apparently had a relationship with Trotsky? You couldn't make it up!!

Whoever dresses her needs sacking. Stroll on the women has the height to carry off some very nice outfits.
What the hell was the poor old girl wearing on the national news tonight? Patchwork quilt no less!

I hope she stays in control of the party and goes on to be a well established pm for years to come.

I also hope she remains Tory leader, but preferably in opposition!

OMG what the cloud9 do we do??
No idea mate?
Panic?
Oly Noly?
Na lets have a leadership tis to distract the public

Yeah its working really well.

I'm struggling to like anyone much atm and I'm a party downer...

Some people tend to forget how politics can be a lethal place, full of career hungry MPs doing what they see necessary to further their lucrative job. This has more or less been the case for many, many years, the only difference these days are the weapons of choice such as social media sites & how news either fake or otherwise gets out to so many people.

For me personally the recent Teresa May news was a non story. It looked a tad theatrical, but no big deal, we all get coughs from time to time.... rolleyes

I'm an old git & happy with it,most of the time

I'm afraid I come from a long line of Socialists, my Dad was a Liverpudlian. I am very upset and angry about the human cost of austerity. And how the mainstream media has hardly said a thing about it. Disabled folk wearing coats indoors because they can't afford heating, or a hot bath. There have been many suicides due to benefits being stopped. 50,000 mobility cars have been taken away. Even Thatcher was never this heartless.

This isn't proper austerity, it's just trying (and still failing) to live within our means as a country. It makes perfect sense for a commercial organisation to spend less than it earns. It makes perfect sense for a family unit to spend less than it earns.

It simply isn't sustainable for a country to continue to spend vastly more than than it brings in through taxation revenue. Borrowing is never a long term solution, as we simply end up spending more on loan repayments and less on the stuff that we should be spending on.

If it can be shown that it's possible to borrow one's way out of debt, then I'll vote Labour, but otherwise, I think Corbyn is a full-on recession waiting to happen.

It worries me that there were enough inwardly-looking people in the USA that thought Trump would be a good president - I just hope Brits aren't similarly inclined to think that the Blonde Buffoon would be anything other than a political and economic disaster.

I genuinely think that Boris would do more damage than Corbyn.

The Lib Dems must be praying for a Conservative leadership election, as it might mean both main parties have near-unelectable leaders. Vince Cable should not underestimated while Con and Lab are so divided

Diane Abbott may be seen as a laughing stock, but she has achieved an astonishing amount in British politics, in the face of pretty overwhelming obstacles.

I admire her very much.

and what fate would you wish on the government if they reversed decades of income tax reductions in order to pay for all the public services that have suffered while we try to live within our means?

Jim - I took some time to read up on Diane Abbott. She's clearly devoted to her causes, but it would appear she can be a bit of a loose cannon - I'm pretty sure some of her comments have been taken out of context ("blonde, blue-eyed Finnish nurses wouldn't know how to take a black person's temperature...") but she clearly doesn't possess an adequate degree of verbal self-restraint. The less charitable might suggest she's a racist and a hypocrite (she won't call herself British because "most people don't accept us as British" and her son attended a private school after she publicly criticised her parliamentary colleagues as ""indefensible" and "intellectually incoherent" for doing the same)

I'm sure she makes a good civil servant, but I don't think she's front-bench material

She's a perfect example of today's PC hypocrisy where certain groups of people are treated differently in the name of equality and everyone must think the same in the name of diversity. It seems Orwell's "Ministry of Truth" is alive and well.

My personal opinion is that I would pay more in tax to fund public services although appreciate not everyone would agree with that one! In such a scenario however I would expect better management and leadership in return to stop some of the waste that goes on.

Nigel, this is so bogus. That Thatcherite quote of equating the country's economy with a family budget doesn't stand up to the slightest of scrutiny. If my gas bill is too high do you think I can devalue the currency, or raise the interest rate of my savings, or bring forward earnings that I haven't yet earned or any number of other levers I would have at my disposal if I were in charge of the country.

Facts seem to be, austerity was just a vehicle for making more millionaires (of which there are more) off the backs of those that have the least (and now they do indeed have less). As was said recently, and I forget by whom, selling capitalism to a generation without capital doesn't seem to be the smartest move.

None of those levers are either without consequence nor are can you use them an infinite number of times. Changing interest rates, for instance, affects the value of the currency, the balance of payments, the pace of growth of the economy etc etc some of which are positive and some of which are negative. In some ways it’s analogous to some levers you do have that the government doesn’t - like moving to a different part of the country where house prices are cheaper but wages are lower and house price inflation is almost non-existent. You can play tunes like using a credit card, fitting solar panels, shopping at Aldi rather than M&S, investing in shares, sell off the family silver - but the broad rule that at some point you have to find the money for it all remains the same.

I don't believe that this is at all bogus. I was brought up in a family where (apart from a mortgage) we spent only what money we had, we never ran up credit card bills or payday loans, and that's rubbed off on me, I only spend what money I have saved up, I don't buy the latest cars on PCH or PCP, I don't have a blinging iPhone or edgePhone, I buy the cheapest fuel, watch Freesat/Freeview and we shop at Aldi, I've never smoked and I haven't moved house for 25 years.

But I see plenty of people who live beyond their means, complain about austerity yet still have their fancy new clothes and blinging phones, smoke and drink and watch BT/SkySports a lot...

Analogies aside and perhaps I'm being simplistic, but isn't the main point that austerity is hitting the poorest, while the super class get richer?

I agree with the principle of living within our means, but the gulf between those who scratch out a living and those who have obscene wealth shows that something is broken.

The wealth of the top 1% in the UK has doubled since 2010.

It would assist the country's finances greatly if corporations actually paid any corporation tax at all. They are not aggressively pursued by HMRC and let off with tiny piecemeal payments.

Also, tax breaks for the super rich while others suffer under austerity - how unfair is that?!

The Tories are just puppets of their rich donors and care nothing for ordinary folk.

Iain Duncan Smith has destroyed the welfare state with unfair sanctions, and tests for the disabled. These are people who have PAID IN to national insurance. The NI pot actually has a surplus! Millions of children live in poverty, 100,000 are homeless in bed and breakfasts. Headmasters are begging parents for monthly donations to keep schools going. The NHS is in crisis especially mental health services. Children's mental health services are non-existant. There is a drastic shortage of care home places for the elderly and they are unable to leave hospital. Food bank use is now in the millions - people queuing up for food - in the sixth richest country in the world! And homelessness continues to go through the roof. In-work poverty is also going up and up.

Always money for a war, never any for the poor.

After 5 years under Corbyn, when people see how good life can be, the Tories will be toast for decades.

I wasn't keen on Diane Abbott cosying up with Michael Portaloo on the TV sofa every week, and she really shouldn't send her son to a private school, but apart from that I think she's OK.

Corbyn split up with his first wife over the private school issue.

I wonder what Jeremy Corbyn would be doing now if he hadn't had private and Grammar school education?

I really don't care about his background, the important thing is he is unlike any other politician. I have never known him to lie. And his heart's in the right place.

I doubt that very much Annie.
He is just like every other politician and once he gets into power he will probably backtrack on nearly all his promises like they all do!

I think May should be given a fair go at it as she inherited a right sh*t storm when she became PM.

I’d like to understand Corbyn’s position on Europe. He claimed to be a Remainer but has absolutely no track record of being pro-Europe. I would also like to understand what his promise on tuition fees actually was (especially as it would disproportionately help middle class students). I don’t trust him further than I could throw him.
