I thought maybe this thread might be a place to discuss the Fmic and the various types we have on the car.

I believe mine is a good copy of the pro alloy one.

I bought it some years ago as it came off a 350 hp coupe.

That was the only reason I bought it as I don't have any technical knowledge about them.

Tell us about the coupe Fmic's you have please.

I used an Evo 7 uprated front mount intercooler on my coupe with good results but I had to cut the front bumper quite abit as it was wider than the pro alloy fmic . I also shortened the pipe routing to reduce the pipe lenth and bends .

I find the Fiat coupe aftermarket FMIC kits to be shocking in design and very old tech. I understand we (including myself) love a bargain but the designs we are using are very old news and restrictive.

I run the full Pro Alloy kit and its is terrible with the amount of bends in the pipe work design i think i counted 11 changes in direction, Ive read some where that for each 90 degree bend you need to push 3-5 psi more to make the same power than a direct pipe route with the same intercooler core.

I like the Evo set up but the cooler core is very old tech now and there is a lot to improve.

With the track toy next year id like to make the routing as short as possible with out running into problems which i know a few have with either the pipe wearing on the ground/speed bumps or blowing silicone hoses because being to near the down pipe.

I am very keen to move over to a charge cooler set up but the one i want is very expensive, this maybe a plan if the moon all line up and one comes up forsake on fleabay

especially after just buying a new turbo

In the future when my workshop is up and running I think I would like to have a go at making the less obstructive and shortest route for a Fmic.

Maybe a solid run with no silicone if possible.

FMIC should have at least a cross section bigger than stock :
air go through 8" x 3" section on stock intercooler so don't got smaller than that.
We went from stock to 9" x 3.5" (with 3" inlet/outlet) on my friend delta and spool + top end were both improved.
I Run 12" x 3" x 18" (3" inlet/outlet) fmic on my 400+ coupe and I think it's nearly the best I can do for under 300€.
I would like to go to vertical flow FMIC to improve piping length and reduce pressure loss but price and routing will not be the same : at least 600€.

The short routing for the pro alloy unless I'm wrong goes under the Rad support bar which I've seen and used before but it hits when going over speed bumps which wear the pipe through. I had an issue when driving down some bumpy roads in Wales where it did the same so opted for the full routing with the LE.

Id like to see how Flea has routed the pipework just incase its different.

if you can take some pics Trappy that would be great.

What is the most ideal enter/exit position that would suit the 20 vt?

Would it be top and bottom nearside? I imagine this is what Julien was getting at.
So then are we looking at two long collection chambers top and bottom with horizontal short tubes/fins?

yes that is a better way but i measured a core etc up before and where the exit would be it runs straight into the slam panel i think it was.

The vertical flow I'm talking about is just to solve the problem for short piping and having a big cross section area on ours coupe.
Of course if you can manage to do the same with horizontal intercooler then the result will be the same and there is no gain to go vertical.

I went from stock to 7"x2.5"x18" (2.5" inlet/outlet) -> more lag but lower IAT
then from 7"x2.5"x18" to 12"x3"x18 with 2.5" Inlet/outlet (in fact the external diameter is 63mm but internal is more about 55mm) -> less lag than previously
then from 12"x3"x18" with 2.5" inlet/outlet to 12"x3"x16" with 3" inlet/outlet -> less lag than previously

Even on stock turbo you will see good gains by changing for a big FMIC

You're right, it does go under the rad support. As I recall, it has been cut out a little so it isn't as bad as that might sound. The tie-down hook is still lower.

I've never touched a speed bump with it. In fact I've driven around every single speed bump I've encountered in 10 years of driven the coop but it would be fair to say that it would touch one if you did.

I tend to drive round speed bumps as well smile

With the sorter routing I have a pipe come off due to riding a kerb at brands while being chased by a GT3 which in turn was very twitchy trying to get over out the way with no power frown

either way il keep at it wink

If you run the turbo output under the rad support you need to cut a fair bit out of the undertray too, which leaves the pipe exposed unless you patch over the hole in the undertray with fibreglass or carbon fibre or whatever.

Yes that would be my problem also with the curbs or if I decided to do a bit of gardening on an open track day.
I am also very lazy by not running the under tray most times.

I was thinking about what clearance I would have loading and unloading the trailor.

More thought and actually strip out my front end to have a play about.

Edited to add that I have now all the kit ready for installing electric power steering,so I am wondering if the old pump removal will free up any useful space.
