Hi all,

Lot of clever computer type people here.

I have both a Laptop (I work from home on) and a Desktop that I run of the same monitor. The current desktop uses RGB cable and the laptop uses HDMI. I have a KVM switch that switches the mouse and keyboard which is great. However the KVM switch only supports RGB.

However we are upgrading the desktop to something a bit more potent which means both will be running Display Port to HDMI.

I do plan on running a second monitor so my question is:

Is there such a KVM switch that will support the above requirements?

I have looked through the usual sites and nothing makes sense to me.

Thanks

Mark

Are there no other ports available on either computer? Most PCs will have a second port, such as DisplayPort

Alternatively, you can drive an external monitor from a USB port using a USB > VGA adapter

They both have multiple ports, but i an ideal world I need to press one button (As I do now) and it swaps from machine to machine. Plus my current single screen only has one HDMI port.

Do you mean VGA (blue 15 pin connector) rather than RGB?

What PC are you getting? I would bet it has either a VGA or more likely a DVI connection which can be converted to VGA so you could still use your current setup.

If I'm reading your post correctly your laptop has an HDMI output, your current monitor is HDMI and the new desktop has an HDMI output so no need to worry about display port, just HDMI/USB (assuming your keyboard and mouse are USB not PS/2).

Up yours Photobucket.

Sorry,

The laptop has 2 mini Displayports and one HDMI. I use the display ports with a display port to hdmi cable. (I have many of these cables hence the confusing statement :))

In which case I see two options from the Lindy list above, either
1. all HDMI or
2. display port from both machines to the KVM then your existing display port to HDMI cable from there (for now, see below).

Personally I'd go with the HDMI option (unless you are thinking of upgrading the monitor at some point and get something that is display port only) as there are less connection links, it's £30 cheaper too.

Up yours Photobucket.
