Started my 16v up this morning drove 2 miles and switched it off, then was really reluctant to start. Once it did it was missing but off idle under load. No warning light, popped the bonnet and checked plug leads, coil connection and distrubutor connection all ok. Spark plugs changed 2 weeks ago for the same problem.Only seems to do it if left a few days. Now it's decided it's going to behave itself which is great but not when your trying to find the fault. Any suggestions woukd be good.

I had similar symptoms with my MGF when the fuel pump was on it's way out although I'm sure it wouldn't last over a 2 week period. Faulty sensor somewhere?

Check for breakdown in the plug cable insulation under the cover, or where the rubber plug holds the bundle in the end of the engine.

Looking in the dark for sparks can be helpful.

Eventually it played up again a couple of weeks a go. Hot and after turning it off for approx 15 mins it Popped banged and didn't want to start but it did just.
Thinking of hot heat soak I decided to change the pick up inside the distributor, which so far seems to have worked.
