Hi all,

Just wandering if anyone has done Spa before with the standard brake pads and how they faired. I've just had all the brake fluid changed but the pads are fairly new so I didn't get them changed but was wandering if this was wise.

I did a track day at Donnington in my old coupe which had 3G discs and yellow stuff pads and the brakes did a great job of shedding the speed and I was impressed with them, but on road I didn't like them so much. They were no good from cold and I didn't like the feel.

So is it worth me changing the pads for something more track orientated? Will I get lots of fade? Opinions much appreciated.

Stu

Change them.
Spa is a 5th/6th gear 3x a lap circuit. And one of the big straights leads onto a near hairpin.

Its not so much them being stock its the heat they generate.

Too much heat means the fluid will boil.
Believe me that isnt nice and gives you no warning.

Change your fluid to at least 5.1

"At least" 5.1?

I've being using Castrol SRF, which is classified as Super Dot 4, the main difference between this and normal Dot 4 is the dry boiling point, which is around 320C compared to 260C degrees.

Definitely change pads. Standard dot 4 so long as it's reasonably fresh should suffice.

I meant a better fluid in general so my comment of at least 5.1 isnt totally correct

Standard dot 4 so long as it's reasonably fresh should suffice

I wouldnt take the risk...
For the sake of a few quid extra and using a better/higher boiling point fluid

Is it racing fluid? If yes, would you have to change it quite regularly?

I think this is what was put in my car recently...

The one thing I changed on my car before I went to Spa last year was the pads. Went from standard (that aren't bad, but you WILL get fading on Spa, definitely, and lousy pedal feel with it, and maybe visit the grass or gravel) to race pads and it's the best mod I ever did.

I use standard discs, pagid yellows and castrol SRF. The car stops well from high speed with no fade.

Cheers for the info guys. Barbz changed the fluid for me, not quite sure what he put in but I asked for stuff for the track. I guess I should bite the bullet and swap the pads as well. So what do people recommend? They have to be good from cold, not squeal like a bitch, be decent on track and not break the bank. Would ds2500's be a good choice?

Stu
