Watching Sex Pistols: Classic Albums.

Never Mind The Bollocks.

Meant so much at the time, but the band look like grandads now. Which means I could/should be one.

How can you be a potential grandad, when you were there at the cutting edge of popular music (70s style)?

My dad had a similar attiude about Elvis and Cliff....

Could it mean no matter how young and angry you are, if you're lucky you end up as an old git? Like your dad?

Bollocks to the filter..

You should make the most of what you've had and what you've got, no matter how good or bad it may be.

Some of us would love to still have a Dad around who was lucky enough to become an old git.

I'm still in my early 30's, but I get what you're saying. I've just returned from a night on the town where most of the drinkers were born in the 90's. This not only terrifies me, but makes me realise that I shouldn't be in town in the first place, let alone on a Saturday night.

My band was Nirvana. They spoke right to the heart of teenagers full of angst at the time. They were brash, loud, used swear words and your parents hated them - "It's a bloody racket!" Much the same as the Pistols. I appreciate that the Pistols had a political agenda that Nirvana didn't, but I feel the comparison is just. Like van Gogh, it's only afterwards they're seen as the geniuses that they are.

This generation doesn't have one of those though. They've been drip fed from a sickly Cowell teat. There just aren't the breakthrough acts like there were. Nobody to cling to. Nobody to metaphorically understand. Unless you empathise with Will Young, of course. Where's today's Pistols/Nirvana?

Perhaps there out there in that virtual world of internet bands that release songs for download frown Gone are the days of going to the Nag's Head in High Wycombe and seeing the likes of Wreckless Eric in a room the size of my lounge. Really happening music and culture in the raw.

Last time I went out I felt old.
Everyone looked like kids.
But pistols and nirvana have always looked ancient to me.
Lady gaga and Diarhiana are there modern replacement.

I think the older you get the less you keep tabs on how old your getting.

Instead of year after year you have milestones.
13 17,18,19,20,21,25,30,40,49,50,60,70.the iconic numbers are all sub 30 so one day It just hits you.

Getting older doesnt bother me,I prepared for this in my younger days as I look ten years older than anyone else my age.
What bothers me is one day thinking a plus interior looks better than an Le.

Yep happens to as all for one reason or another. Back in the day, late 60's early 70's it really was happening, OK looking back with rose tinted glasses aside it was a different time, a sense of innocence but still laced with a bit of bad behavior & the excitement of it all.... we were young & sure to have our way.......sorry songs/flashbacks.. hippy

I still reckon we had a better time back then. So many things were changing for the young. I'm with Brewster on the "yooff" of today, to be fair it's not exactly their fault. Another thing, there is a lot of information open to everyone nowadays in many forms. Sounds like I'm sounding daft but information overload is not a good thing.

I considered myself a bit of a "dude" back in the day, I'm the first to....can't believe how cynical & grumpy I've become, & it's usually something trivial to boot
.. laugh

My wife & I had a trip down memory lane a couple of weeks back. We met nearly 40yrs ago at a well known night club in Aberdeen. Obviously things had changed it was now a Hotel & the owner who was our age was only too happy to show us around when he heard our story. Well gone was the long haired "dude" with attitude & cock sure of himself....I actually felt so emotional & wanted to have a good blub cry Ah well that's life. Sorry slightly off topic. For me I grew up in exciting times & I could blether on but I can't put you through that laugh What the hell happened to the years? cry

I'm an old git & happy with it,most of the time

Every generation has its rebel icons. There was no political message to the Sex Pistols - it was the same nihilism that Nirvana preached. I think Eminem served that role to an extent, but it was less on my radar as I'm not a rap listener. Politically, acts like NWA carried the torch, but today there are no -isms to follow, ideology is dead and so, apparently is the desire to rebel through mainstream music. You occasionally see glimpses such as RATM beating XFactor clone to Christmas number one or Ding-Dong this weekend, but it's not what you'd call a strong political message, more mischief.

Music as a medium for politics is more under the radar these days as the old record industry model no longer works so they won't put money into anything considered risky as the potential return isn't worth it.

There are those that believe in "Live Fast, Die Young", but they are usually foolish youngsters wasting their youth, as is their duty and as was ours.

Check out The Mars Volta.

Young(ish), fantastic musicians, intelligent and with strong messages (but without being over the top and preachy about it like Rage Against The Machine.

I know what you mean, I went to a gig on Friday night...and was pretty well the oldest there....

My legs ached and ears were numb by the end of it.

I reverted to middle-age type by picking up some red wine to drink when I got back home!

When you get even older you will have the red wine already opened and breathing BEFORE you get home cool

The Sex Pistols? Radical?? I don't think so, they were individuals pulled together by Malcolm McLaren weren't they?

Unless time is being unkind to me, my memory is telling me they never wrote a single word of any of their anti-establishment songs, or much of any of the others - they were as much a product of media hype and individual selection as JLS!!

Oh no. The depressing thread. Usually, I start going down memory lane (courtesy of the internet) after too many bottles of "2 for the price of 3" real ales. I start looking up my old university, to find it no longer exists. My friends on Facebook... successful with lovely families.. and shiny teeth (though some have shiny bald patches too). Looking at the photo albums of a lost youth. Wishing away the last year of my 30's.

Now where did I leave that noose? crazy

Just kidding of course. laugh I get as morose as the next guy, but I try to keep things in perspective as I age.

My first Coupe was in my late 20's..... my second in my late 30s. Who says you can't have 2 mid life crises !! laugh laugh

Ach dinnae worry so much, when you get as old as me you're past caring, jimboy'll tell you tongue laugh

But you'll find on here a fair cross-section of folk I'd bet who have issues of one sort or another and you might say to yourself well actually I'm quite lucky....??

My old boss used to say when I went upstairs to his office two at a time (in my 30's) , It's alright for you young Edinburgh, it's all dahn 'ill from here... laugh
