Drilled box or induction kit??? #1536845

Hi all after a couple of months hunting for a 20vt I've found one :-)

It looks pretty sound so far other than it feels a bit restricted. I found a split boost pipe which I'll be changing at the weekend to see if it cures it.

My question is as it's completely standard with low miles I was wondering what's best
Panel filter with drilled air box or k&n induction kit or a similar?

Funds are a bit limited ATM after having to up my budget to buy this car but I'm aiming to get 300bhp in the near future so any other ideas on what's best to get to my 300bhp would be much appreciate.

Thanks in advanced

on a standard car I would use a k&n panel filter and drilled airbox as a cone filter saps the low down torque .

I drilled mine, infact I cut the whole side right out with a dremel, then meshed over it
I was running with a k+n panel filter up to 330+bhp (for over a year with no issues what so ever) before having to changing to a large cone filter when I wanted more power, so up to 300/330 bhp is fine, with a good panel filter.

It's probably not ideal, as the filter will get a lot more dirty, a lot faster and require replacing more often, but as For the noise, works a treat thumb

Yeah I often just blew it out with the air gun to be honest.

To get to 300 bhp or there abouts you'll be looking at:
An upgraded turbo
fmic (front mount intercooler)
Fuel pump wiring mod
and a remap or custom chip.

That alone is going to set you back a few hours overtime! If funds are tight, drill the box, get a decent panel filter, and look into remapping as it is, then just enjoy it whilst you save, just be warned... Once you start tuning it, it's a very down hill slippery slope laugh

Sorting that boost leak will certainly give some performance gain For starters.

Will you take £30 collected for the air box and k&n mario?

What's the fuel pump wiring mod?

Can a fmic be fitted without loosing the aircon?
I looked at one with a fmic and he had to remove half the air con system which I don't want to do.

Sorry for the stupid questions I haven't played with turbo cars for 13 yrs lol

front mounts are fitted without loosing the a/c yes. There are a whole range to choose from, just get onto one one of the specialists on here, I'm sure they'd be happy to give you a stack of advice.

The fuel pump wiring mod, basically when your running a bit more power, your engine will require a better fuel feed. The standard pump is easily up to the job for 300 bhp, but it will suffer when your battery drain is high, ie - if your in traffic, your engine fans kick in, lights, wipers, a/c , stereo are all on etc, this will intermittently take power away from the pump. The wiring mod gives a good constant live to the pump ensuring your getting all the fuel when you need it.

I didn't know that f1angs. I'll have to look into the different types of fmic and the fuel pump wiring when I get tuning it properly.

Awesome pm sent :-)

Is drilling the air box (wing side not block side) proven to increase performance?

At least a 20 bhp increase dependant on the size of the holes and colour of the cam cover smile

coat

Don't forget one of those sport placebo air filters will also add another 50bhp & of course the best by far is the electric turbo air blaster that blows all that air into the airfilter box, unlimited bhp.... laugh

I'm an old git & happy with it,most of the time

Nigel did a test many years ago on the rolling road at Powerstation when it used to be in Cheltenham.
He devised an airbox with a louvered opening which could be controlled by a bicycle brake cable and lever.
On a back to back test between louvers fully closed and fully open, he car gained a whopping ZERO BHP.

Just fit a K&N panel in the standard airbox, it does change the noise slightly and you hear a little more from the dump valve.
Induction kits can sound a little too harsh and unless you're following it up with a list of other mods, they will lose you some torque low down.

I want a bit of noise as I use to have a vr6 and that sounded awesome. I will do more mods once I've got some cash back together

Drilled airbox and K&N sounds great - a lot more noise with a K&N filter.

If you get hold of a spare airbox, you can always go back if you dont like it.

Cone filters will have your passengers looking in your glove box for Darth Vader (might be just what you are after noise wise!)

Agreed with Suba. If you want more noise go for the drilled airbox. I did this first then changed to a panel K&N. The difference in noise is far more noticeable going from:

std airbox to drilled airbox (both with OEM filter)

than:

drilled with OEM filter to drilled with K&N.

Here is an image of my old "drilled" airbox, it made a noticeable increase in induction noise!
