Hopefully this is the sort of thing one of the IT boffins on here will know off the top of their head.

Knocking down and rebuilding my house. Currently have Sky broadband, but very happy to change this to something else.

Will be living on site but about 60 metres away from the house, broadband hub and phone socket.

Want to be able to use the internet and landline (we get naff all mobile signal) where we will be temporarily living. Anyone have ideas on the best way to achieve this?

Will be laying an armoured cable between the two sites so we have electrics.

After the build, where we are temporarily living may be used occasionally. So if it is not a hassle, it would be useful to have the option of occasional internet access there.

If you can leave the broadband router/hub connected in the house then you can run wired ethernet cable upto 100m no problem, which would give a 1Gbit connection (or 100Mbit if it's an old router). Use a Gigabit (or 100Mbit) network switch on the other end and that'll give multiple sockets to plug into.

As you want to use the landline as well:
Simply run a telephone extension cable the 60m from
the house to your site and then plug in phone and Hub to it as normal. You can do this at the same time as you lay your armoured cable. Job done smile

Thanks both.

To condense requirements, in case this helps:

- Currently internet and landline in house
- Shortly will require internet (if wired, will need to be able to use wireless devices) and landline in temporary accommodation, no internet or landline required in house
- Next year will need internet and landline back in house, ideally (but not a deal-breaker) with internet still in temporary accommodation (so can use wireless devices).

Just move the hub back to the house next year and if you need to use wireless devices in the TA(temp accommodation) then as long as there are no major obstructions, the wifi signal from the hub should reach the TA without a problem.

When you say knock the house down do you really mean that. To what extent?

The extension method may work but could cause issues, not least when you do ground works. Depending on what your doing you may need BT to come out and install a temp lime to the new location. May cost a little more but in the grand scheme probably not signigifcant and may save heart ache with poor and/or lost connections.

IIRC the master socket is key if you disturb/move/other piss about with it BT may well walk away from any issues until you pay them as it not yours to play about with.

External wall that has the master socket is getting knocked down and rebuilt.

In which case I think technically you will need to contact BT to move it for you. You could risk it but you could end up liable for a new connection if there are issues.

Yup, definitely call BT. You'll get into a virtual shit-storm if you don't, and you really don't want to be in the middle of a BT - Open Reach sandwhich...

P.s. don't forget to run a fibre network in your new abode ;-)

Yes, if you're moving the analogue phone as well then would be easiest just to extend the main phone line and getting BT to do it would probably be advisable.

This has turned into a farce.

Following several calls back and forth, in a nutshell Sky says it is BT's issue, BT say it is Sky's.

BT will not relocate it to temporary accommodation on the same premises, only to another location in the same building.

Sky can't do it because it is BT's equipment.

Doesn't look like there is any solution via the proper channels.

All suggestions welcome.

Have Virgin put a cable in your road yet Mark?

have you tried looking on self build/renovation forums? I am sure this must be something others need/want to do.

Get some cable and DIY. You may lose some bandwidth with the extension but it's still the best available alternative if BT and Sky won't play ball.

PeteP - We are not in Virgin territory, so to speak.

GrahamL - This is what I am contemplating.

Hyperlink - The search continues!

What GrahamL said. Move the master socket, there isn't anything complicated in there just some wires that come in from outside.

Unscrew the box from the wall (Assume it is a box) then somehow bury or protect it and run a cable from it to a convenient location in the house that isn't being renovated.

Then string Ethernet cable from your house to the temporary location. (Ethernet should be fine for a run of 60m). You can then bung it into an ethernet to wifi bridge or just hardwire it.

Many thanks for all the advice.

As it happens, I ended up sorting this out yesterday (as the wall was coming down today). I moved the master socket to another outbuilding from where the wifi signal reaches the main house and also the temporary accommodation. I reckon the signal from the spare phone handset will also stretch to there, so bit of a result, and a bit of cash saved.

You should pop over and have a look Beggers.

We're making good progress. Coming up to 9 weeks into the main build (just over half a year more to go!) Foundations encircling the original property should be finished end of this week.

Cat is bemused.

A few months behind schedule but we are nearing the end. Temporary Internet phone fix worked well.

Currently sorting out electrics before plastering. Need help from the AV techno boffins. I happily confess my ignorance in this area but I am trying to learn.

Want to think ahead with the wiring. All suggestions welcome.

What I want to achieve

1. A room that will be a bedroom in the short term that can become a cinema room in a couple of years but with the option of being a spare room. This will involve ceiling speakers, projector and a screen that is housed within the ceiling. Room is about 5.5m by 3.5m. Gone for 4 ceiling speakers as compromise to limit visual intrusion. Will add additional non-ceiling ones and a subwoofer and presumably will need a receiver/amp of some sort.

2. 2 reception rooms that can be turned into areas with music for letting hair down rather than anything to keep hifi purists happy. Rooms are 6m x 7m and half vaulted and 9m x 5m half vaulted. There will also be TV in these room that I would want to have the sound coming from a part of the room rather than the whole room, but music in the whole room when I want music.

3. Ambient background music in a dining room, so maybe built in speakers. But I don't want to clutter it with any hi-fi equipment if I can avoid it.

5. Different music in different rooms and not piped throughout the house.

6. Don't have Sky but if decided to get I would want different TV viewing to be possible in different rooms.

Looking at hard wiring rather than rely on wireless in most rooms, just in case. Will be running trunking to allow updating/additional cables and using cat 6a to run to most rooms.

Want to limit what techno gubbins is permanently out and on show.

Oh yeah and I would love to do it on a sensible budget. No qualms about buying second hand. Won't be buying the cinema stuff for a couple of years - it is just the wiring for that room I want to sort now. Will be running trunking to allow updating/additional cables and using cat 6a to run to each room. Music audio equipment will be bought over the next couple of months so guidance on that - eg what would be needed in terms of amps/receivers Won't need to hook up an Xbox or anything like that.

TV would be sorted if you went for Sky Q. Then you can have sky anywhere by using homeplug.

Running cables is great until they are not where you want them.

As for music I love my Sonos system,so easy to add to any room and you could use the ceiling speakers too.
