Technology has moved on tremendously in the last number of years, so tuning options have increased massively. ECU electronics and dyno technology are now cheaper and better than before.
Previously the only options were re-programming the existing ECU using a replacement Eprom (which Leighton had obviously put a lot of R&D into to get the maximum performance) or a very expensive replacement standalone ECU and a full remap from scratch.
The standard ECU has limitations as there arent enough mapping points to get everything perfectly tuned. Now you can get a high powered piggyback ECU for a few hundred quid which will allow any good mapper to significantly adjust the mapping (assuming you have added the recommended hardware upgrades). The modern hub dynos are really superb for remapping as they allow the tuner hold the engine for every rev and load mapping point.
I have a bit of a hybrid setup - a Flea tuned eprom standard ECU which I have further refined by fitting a piggyback ECU (ECU Master DET3) and dyno re-tune. It has safely squeezed another 15-20 HP and has also resolved the cold start issues which were a problem of to the limited mapping points.
I would say that Leighton is still a good option as he has pobiibly the best in depth knowledge of the Coupe, but that doesnt mean that another quality dyno Tuner couldnt do a good job using the modern technology.

Does the DET3 do 5 cylinder? I thought it was 4 cylinder only?

According to their website It can only drive 4 injectors directly.
But they also say that it can control more than 4 indirectly. So I guess when piggybacking onto the stock ECU it can control the 5 injectors.
