Hello, was just wondering wether there would be any benefit from fitting a fan for the oil cooler, to come on when the rad fans do,or maybe of a sensor in the oil,or a switch inside??? I was thinking the oil cools the engine aswell as the water and with a FMIC it might help keep things cooler, although you dont want to cool the oil to much.

Do you notice the oil temps differing wildly from the water temps? If so you would need to trigger it from the oil temp itself.

I would think that a decent fan would make a big difference to the temperatures though.

Dunno , I have a voltage gauge, so no idea what my oil temps are really, was just concerned that in traffic, or after hard driving that the oil could be getting way to warm, especially in warm weather. And I have a fmic which probally restricts the the fan will blow on to the rad, that a fan on the oil cooler would just help as i said before the oil also cools the engine aswell as the water.. Its just an idea, and wondered if it would be worth doing.

As an exercise it’s not going to do any harm. In terms of costs vs. benefits I suppose that’ll depend on how valuable you consider having one less paranoia multiplier?

well hopefully i will have a spare fan around the same size as the cooler, my biggest concern is making the oil too cool , But with my coop being modified it would not be a bad idea.

What I mean is that if the oil is much hotter than the water it will be transferring heat to the water via the block... which will then get cooled via the water radiator - even the fmic will help keep temperatures down to some extent.

I think it is probably a good mod to add the fan though - but you would definitely want to trigger it off actual temperature settings (how you work them out is a different question) - but you can get a kit to switch a fan off/on triggered off a voltage signal for £6-7

How are you going to do this? I wouldn't put the fan in front of the cooler and there isn't much space behind the cooler IIRC.

Sorry, i have to ask, why would you want a fan in the first place?

The oil cooler is there to cool the oil, the only time the oil cooler isn't up to scratch is repeated use of the car on a track, so unless you are turning it into a track car, i fail to see the point in installing a fan, when the stock oil cooler is adequate for short bursts

On a stock car with AC on a hot day, and being stock in stop start traffic for 45+mins I find the stock oil cooler doesn't do much because its passive.
Sometimes I see my oil temps go close to 100 in the above situations which I don't like much... I think a fan would be handy in this case.

Agree, once i'm on the move, even when ragging it, I never see more than 80. Also once your actually moving the fan would be pretty much redundant.

100 degrees is fine for oil temp, you want to be worried when it climbs to 120 degrees, this is when the chemical composition of the oil breaks down and isn't as effective at lubricating and taking the carbon deposits

As I said, I was just curious wether a fan would be usefull to keep the oil cool,Especially on hot days in stop start traffic.

Will hopefully be using my car on the track,TBH I am hoping to compete in TOTB next year aswell. Ijust thought/wanted to know if keeping the oil cooler, would help keep the engine cool, and assist the radiator fan aswell, It was only an Idea something to think about. \:\)

That is fair enough, I wasn't out to discredit your idea's just curious as to why.

I personally think, that it would be a waste of time and would be better off with the ongoing group buy of a larger oil cooler, because the way the weather is going, we dont get that many hot days anymore! \:D But the oil cooler should be uprated if you're going to look at running 50% - 100% more power than the stock engine, like the radiator should be done etc..
