Doing those speeds in a hatch back would be even scarier

It might well do as the coupe would be out of it's power band at the top end of the rev range so it would need higher peak power to allow for the 400 bhp needed at nearly 8000 rpm as trappy worked out All 400bhp+ coupes will be making that power at 7,000 rpm or more....

well one day you might see a coupe do 200mph but it wont be a 20vt engine pushing it lol There is no reason why not. There are a few 2lr four pots that have done it. One scoob at TOTB hit 202 over a mile....that's with the aerodynamics and AWD transmission losses. Even an engine that is built for it would be stressed to its limit - so of course there is the chance that it would let go if something was out of tolerance. I would be far more concerned about the aerodynamics of the car being able to cope with the airflow under the car. I've hit just shy of 150mph down the long straight at Bedford in a coupe, and I'm not sure that I would like to go much quicker in one unless it had been in a wind tunnel etc. The same would apply to a sccob or skyline, though the latter does feel like a far more 'planted' car cruising at speed that a coupe!

It was Matt from South Africa that was attempting to break the 200mph barrier.
I think he hit 88mph and ended up in the year 1955, he's still struggling to get back ! LMFAO @ Jimbo!! Suba, what road was this in Bedford?? im sure you can get the coupe 20vt to 200mph, i was watching a 5th gear series where they attempting cracking the 200mph barrier, some guy in a cossie with no helmet did it and the car looked like a dog. From memory it didn’t have that much done to it! any thing is possible, just depends on funding, a road suitable for the speed and the big one...balls of risking your life if any thing goes wrong.

Keeping it cool is one thing, replicating the air resistance is another. That is what is stopping the car getting to 200mph.
Suba will be talking about Bedford Aerodrome.

Haha I sorted the two steves out with one hugh snail fan and loads of midi size ones years ago when they first moved, when they first used the big one it was louder then the engines they rollered and they had to box it and sound proof it, came from a factory being knocked down in chemlsford, I'l never forget I stuffed as many as I could into my mk1 blue Renault 19 16v 1.8 chamaid, turned up at 12am at night and was like "oh found a solution to your air supply".........,.where the f**k did you get them from ?

should be able to do 200mph taking the coupe into super car territory. The Ferrari 355's top speed is 186mph. The Ferrari 348's is about 175mph-ish. The Honda NSX is about 174mph-ish. Essentially, less than 200mph. Most importantly, all these cars are from the Coupe's era. Since some of the big bhp Coupes are capable of near these speeds, wouldn't that mean that they are already in super car territory?

From what I can work out, I reckon my Coupe is geared for around 195 at the (raised) rev limiter
However, there's no chance of it getting near this speed with the power and aerodynamics it has
It could do 200 with the power its got with vastly imroved aero (flat floor, faired in wheels, removed and smoothed handles - that sort of thing)
Alternatively, I reckon it would do 200 with another 200bhp and an even higher rev limit (like 8,000rpm)
I reckon JohnS' car would have done it, given a long enough straight.
IIRC, the longest straight in the UK is Bruntingthorpe at 2 miles (but where you can get an entry speed of around 70-80) However, at recent V-Max events, it was taking silly bhp to hit 200 (like a 700+bhp RUF911) within the 2 miles.
For what its worth though, I've seen 170+ in my Coupe and it was still accelerating quite noticeably (I'd not long changed to 6th gear). It was also perfectly stable - not a hint of wander and the steering still felt well weighted - all this suggests the Coupe is inherently aerodynamically stable and probably capable of 200 without any aero mods to keep it straight and flat

I'll settle this! If I win the lotto tonight then I WILL DO 200 MPH in my coop and post lots of videos and try and get Top Gear to air it as an "up yours" to the 5th gear crew and their rubbish Porsche.

Suba, what road was this in Bedford??
im sure you can get the coupe 20vt to 200mph, i was watching a 5th gear series where they attempting cracking the 200mph barrier, some guy in a cossie with no helmet did it and the car looked like a dog. From memory it didn’t have that much done to it! any thing is possible, just depends on funding, a road suitable for the speed and the big one...balls of risking your life if any thing goes wrong.
the cosworth is NOT a dog!it was a rainy day and its a white car so looked a little dirty!its an incredibly well designed car owned by Rod Tarry, the "bloke" in the cardigan driving it was Mark Shead the owner of MA Developments.i think at the time of shooting the car was running 600bhp BEFORE the nitrous (another 200bhp iirc),it has a MASSIVE spec with everything being designed down to the last little detail:gear ratios (tremec tko box),10 inch diff with a custom rear end, wheel and tyre sizes, all of which were checked and rechecked for suitability for the event.it also runs a custom roll cage which is hidden away so as not to give the game away. the car now runs even more power (800 odd bhp plus n2o)and has hit in the region of 215-220mph within bruntingthorpe.there are a handful of cars in the country that can do this is road going trim, with full interior etc. you will NOT get to 200mph on any road in this country,or on any runway without a huge budget and a real understanding of high speed runs.you need to be on full throttle in top gear for 30 odd seconds, the mapping has to be top notch. this is his website, see what it really takes.400bhp will not get you there, not in a coupe. http://fastestcosworth.com/

Mate chill out, I said from memory it LOOKED like a dog, didn't say it's a shed or slate the car did I??
No!
I love cossie's and respect the nature and history of the cosworth breed.
I was just sayin that with a lot of money you can do any thing!
Thanks for the spec of the car and a little history lesson on it!

gs racing..welcome to the forum mate ..no harm intended by the dog comment i'm sure.. what marco was really saying was its not the prettiest of cars however well designed and put together..coupes however are and thats one of the reasons we are passionate about them... i would try with my car if i thought i had a chance of getting near... with the forged i am building i would definately be prepared to change my plans at this stage if i could get enough help and knowledge to take on that challenge.. i would put a certain amount in monies in but i suspect i would need help or sponsorship as i couldn't afford to do it on my own..i suspect the 9.1 accralites i have bought also may be wrong for this as i expect it would be a very big turbo and big boost involved..so any wealthy coupe enthusiasts out there here is a car a driver an engine out ready to be turned into the first 200mph coupe and some of the money toward the build any takers?
