It can do, to give a little extra silencing, but most are just a straight pipe I think. As long as it is a 'straight-through' design, it shouldn't effect performance greatly, and will still flow a lot better than a cat .

Can you see straight-through the pipe? A lot of exhaust boxes just have a perforated pipe surrounded by wire wool or something similar, so they allow the gases to pass 'straight-through' but just expend a little on the way. These are best for performance .
Cheaper ones may not actually have a pipe going right the way through, rather two sections of pipe next to each other with holes in to let gases pass from one to the other. These are cr*p !

Rog - have you now swapped your straight decat pipe for a silenced one?
A couple of weeks ago I was going to re-fit my cat as I thought my exhaust was just too loud, but recently it seems to have got quieter and now sounds (although as I mentioned in my post about undertrays, I'm not sure if running without the tray has some how made it sound different )

When i bought the Blueflame I asked the same question and was told it helped drown out some sound and make it less obvious that no cat was fitted

it does work.
the silencing makes no difference to performance, but it just takes the edge of the aggresive sound of an un-sileneced pipe.
Rog is right. I've got a decat (which is kinda of a 'bullet' design which is a perforated mini-expansion chamber) , the gains are still there without the sharpish noise and droning at motorway speeds. hey , Rog , haven't seen you posting in a while. cheers.

How long had the decat been on? Only ask as new exhaust pipes can sound loud until they carbon up a bit and bed in. just a thought.

I had my local exhaust place make me up a straight piece of pipe for £30 fitted i think it was. Had to put my cat backon for the mot the other day and hated it with the cat back on, quiet and noticed a slight performance difference. Happily the decat is now back on for that lovely burble. Took a few weeks to carbon up but get lovely pops and bangs from it now too!!

I got CSC de-cat for my 20v n/a from Lars @ Gazzella. Cost under a 100 and a lot cheaper than a new cat. Rolling road showed it gave me 4bhp top end (191) and 10lb extra peak torque (175 I think)

Oh, but it did shift my power band/characteristic 500rpm further up the revs, so sacrificed a bit of power lower down

When i bought the Blueflame I asked the same question and was told it helped drown out some sound and make it less obvious that no cat was fitted Can you get a cat-bypass that actually looks like a proper cat ? So if ol plod stick happen to stick his nose in it would still look right? Surely they would take it off and test the thing incase of an accident...
F****** b****** thing...

The police wont but an insurance assessor will. Remember Neil from Greenlight said on here recently that your insurance wont payout if they find out your car is catless. Really not worth the risk IMO. Also kills the seals on your turbo.

Cosmo, he's hardly going to say anything alse Yes if you are caught without a cat you do risk the insurance company not paying out.

I think you see where I am heading here ... cheers.
