Airplane.

"My orders came through. My squadron ships out tomorrow. We're bombing the storage depots at Daiquiri at 1800 hours. We're coming in from the north, below their radar."
"When will you be back? "
"I can't tell you that. It's classified. "

I'd list the following, some already mentioned.

Get Carter (the Caine 1970 original)

Smokey & The Bandit (best bit for me is Jackie Gleason's venom spitting Sheriff Buford T. Justice)

The Italian Job (the Caine original)

The Long Good Friday (Bob 'oskins at his bullish best)

Airplane (we've gotta get these people to a hospital) [what is it Doctor?] (its a big building full of sick people, but that doesnt matter right now)

Sexy Beast (not a dutch film before anybody mentions it - Ben Kingsley is a one man tour de force as Don Logan)

The French Connection

Bullitt

Scarface

In Bruges

Team America: World Police

Carry on Cleo (or Carry on Camping)

Lock Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels

Nuns on the Run

The Third Man

The Day of the Jackal (Edward Fox 1960's original)

Dirty Harry (or Magnum Force - the better of the Dirty Harry films)

In The Loop

Shaun of the Dead

The Poseidon Adventure (the original again)

Raiders Of The Lost Ark is a full 60 places above Full Metal Jacket so I'd argue that yes, they can.

Some great suggestions on here though, loads I've seen but should probably watch again. Loads that I haven't seen and will be going on the list.

Keep up the good work forum.

Scent of a woman
Fargo
Taxi (french)
Delicatessen (french)

There are some very good Hitchcock films, but I have to agree that Citizen Kane is the greatest film of all time.

I also think the Truman Show if fantastic

Hard Candy - Not many know about this film. It's amazing; the movie is almost entirely shot in one house, with 2 actors! Brilliant stuff! laugh

I'm suprised Full Metal Jacket is only 60 places below Raiders of the Lost Ark tongue

Give me Platoon, Hamburger Hill or Hanoi Hilton before FMJ anytime.

Well obviously not everyone will agree.

I wouldn't really compare FMJ to other war films though as I don't really see it as a film about war as such. I think it's much more about the mindset and there's very little action in it. Much like Jarhead in a way.

But Indiana Jones......do me a favour.

Agreed, its not really a Vietnam 'War' film, more about boot camp. Just a film I've never taken to.

Indiana Jones cool

Don't get me wrong, I think the Indiana Jones films are good fun, but then I also enjoy Dumb and Dumber and I wouldn't put that in the top 250 films of all time.

I've just watched 'there will be blood' what a good film, I also loved 'no country for old men' so perhaps it's the filming style that I prefer?

Some great films mentioned, so agree with:

Scarface
Godfather Collection
The Big Blue
Schindler's List
The Deer Hunter
Planes, Trains and Automobiles

But would add -

Once Upon a Time in America
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - stupid film, but always make's me laugh
The Omen
Gandhi

Lawrence of Arabia. Superb movie, truly superb!

Oh, and Apollo 13, even though we know what happens at the end....
