I've never seen it as such in Britain. In my wife's culture it is mandatory, of course (Ukraine), but here people get offended if you ask them.

(Actually, in rural Wales it is pretty normal, but then again, their toilets are at the bottom of the garden, isn't it.)

I do actually have loads more male friends than female ones and the male friends are usually just that, friends.
