Ok,I know Stan will be along soon to tell me re caps and wrong section etc Right here goes!! As you maybe aware my last few postings have been about bad things happening in 3s!!! Since then,I have had both front and rear wheel bearings replaced, all brakes done ,coolant hose of death fixed,(I was lucky,no engine damage at all!!) Heres the final straw!! Driving on the M8 to work yesterday, moseying along around 60mph as I was early, listening to the Old Firm game on radio. I get to around 1km from the Kingston Bridge and I hear a thumping noise from the front drivers wheel, sounds like a flat, next thing I know the wheel has detached itsself from the car (maybe the [cloud9] was a Robin Reliant in a previous existance) I see the wheel disapear along the m8,manage to guide the car into the hard shoulder, sparks flying and excrement exploding from my shocked sphincter, without killing myself or any por sod coming behind me!I cant vouch for not killing some poor sod coming the other way by alloy wheel as the alloy wheel has not been found yet !!!!!!! While Im sitting trembling on the hard shoulder ,I spot an Inky passing me,ten minutes later its pulling up in front of me!! A big thanks to Marc (zsowner) newbie to the Forum, for doubling back to see if he could help!! It was more than Strathclyde Police Roads unit did!!!!!!!! Anyway,Marcs a spray painter to trade and said he was willing to respray the car for nothing!! (kidding mate sorry!!) Car gets recovered on a flatbed AA truck to D and M in Irvine, poor Mick has to come out and let me get the b**tard car into his workshop as its on 3 wheels and the thing wont start now!!!!! To put me window up!! No power at all to ignition, but plenty power in the battery!! Im looking for some Forum help on 1)Why the wheel sheared off, 2)Why the power died when the battery is charged 3) Why I dont just burn the b'strd thing!!!!!! Cheers Paul Is it the 666 reg number after all????????

Sorry to read this It won't start because the fuel cut off switch has been triggered becasue of the wheel coming off. Has the wheel sheared off or did the wheel bolts come loose?

Jeez, thats no good! Sounds like the bolts were loose unless the wheel bearing failed catastrophically. Any pics of the damage? Off to stand on the squinty bridge and look for an alloy floating past!

You had the wheels off to do the bearings. So i would start asking questions at that door mate. Bad luck you are having, apart from being safe and sound.

haha yeah I will respray it for free if you loan me a grand permanently. looked as if they were not tight because the disc spun round and wasn't centred with the bolt holes, I'd have thought if they were to tight the bolt heads would have came off and left the threaded part in locking the disc to the hub ? Not a mechanic or anything just a guess , ? Anyway give me a should if you get a wing and I will paint it for a small fee ,

When my wheel bolts sheared off my Bravo HGT (with Coupe alloys, BUT aftermarket bolts) they snapped and had to be drilled out of the disc and hub. Sorry to hear this anyway, and i hope you get everything sorted! Not a nice thing to happen, i have heard of a few cases like this recently and im blaming potholes

Joe... whats the likelyness of ALL 4 bolts coming undone though? Also the bearing was done on the otherside not the side where the wheel came off .... *If* the others hadn't been done up to the correct torque, then one pops out, the vibration works on the others and they wind themselves out of the hub. Happens on a far more regular basis than you'd believe. Snapped bolts on the other hand, all four, a lot more rare indeed! My bet is on one or two not being torqued correctly, or wear in the threads of the hub flange/bolt threads and then bingo, wheel works loose and leaves the vehicle.... Edit: the submit button fired all by itself! Before I had a chance to say, I agree with Joe, until "Stone-Age Steamer" can learn how to put up photos then we're all just guessing. I wonder if he has a 3yr old in the house that could show him how to post photos?

Most people just tighen the wheel bolts by hand with a breaker bar... so they must have been very loose...

Hell Paul, you're having a run of bad luck with that car. Sure you don't want to get rid and buy the unique spider vx?
This is how it should have come out of Torino!

Yes its shocking to read such stories, however the point about selling up and getting another one is not a bad idea. Simply for psychological reasons.
I am more than happy to host any pics..

if the wheel nuts started to work loose you would generally feel the wheel wobble and vibration before hand. I remember making that school boy error years ago when changing pads and forgetting to tighten the wheel bolts fully.

Did he mention the "wheels coming off" situations i've had when rallying in the forrest??? Just a thought... A large pothole or dip could be enough to shock the bolts/ hub.
60-70 mph through a forrest loosing a wheel is also "A-hole like a rabbits nose" kinda scary lol

Sorry to hear about that, horrible moment but good you came to a safe stop. Hate to think of what could happen! Just before Xmas a bolt snapped on me when taking off the wheel, I had to drill it out. Luckily there was a spare rolling around in the boot. Yesterday, same wheel (front drivers side) another snapped as I was putting the wheel on without any real force which was worrying. I managed to get this out with a stud extracter. Replaced it with one from a set of security bolts I had to get. I have just ordered a full new set and will use the new security ones too. And no motorway driving until I get them on.
