bollocks its called a charge cooler beacause the inlet air is a charge in its own right< and its going through a cooler,. air to air cooler is what we are talking about anyway, and your thinking about stars or something Bollocks are not charge coolers, they really suck at that. Charge cooler is considered to be air-water, intercooler is considered to be air-air. And keep your bollocks to yourself please.

and what is an aftercooler, i have been taught that they are all the same with air to air VS air to water being a difference in how it cools rather than what its overall aim is which is to cool charge temps down

An aftercooler is a technically-correct, but little used term for a chargecooler, which in itself is a technically-correct name for a device which cools intake air (the charge) before it reaches the engine. The method of cooling the charge can be water or air (or rarely, both).
So, Zimpara is technically correct - a chargecooler is something that cools the charge - the method of cooling is irrelevant.
The term 'intercooler' comes from the fact that aero engines used to use multiple-stage compressors, with cooling systems between each stage (hence 'inter-cooler')
However, the 'intercooler' name stuck and is now associated almost exclusively with air-to-air chargecooling.
Similarly, the term 'chargecooler', although technically meaning ANY device that cools the inlet charge is now widely used to mean a water-to-air charge cooler
