With the summer heat and humidity here my brakes are squealing like a pig!

I currently have mtec grooved and mintex pads.

I know this is a major issue with lots of people and I don't want to waste my money trying loads of different combos.

What disc and pad combo will gaurantee no squeal?

Can budget £200 to solve this.

Is it true that ferodo pads are squeal free?

Stock pads are the only ones that do not squeal.

Otherwise you can add shims to the mintex pads that you have - it will help, but not eliminate the squeal completely

Alex; hmm, I've also got mtec, just grooved though, all round, maybe if I stick yellow stuff on the front then it might cure it.

I think mine only squeal at the front.

i have OMP pads and DBA grooved discs and no squeal, the OMP pads were £45 and perform great so bit of a bargain, had pagid on before that and they squealed

make sure you use lots of copper slip when fitting the pads

It's the Mintex pads that are the source of your squealing. They're utter crap IMO. Hate them!

I liked the mintex 1155's that I had on my coupe - if they squealed I just got them really hot, that would fix it for a few days. smile

I agree suba! My mintex didn't squeel after I had my brembo's properly serviced. laugh

I think some pads are more *likely* to squeel than others. But with the pad guides clear an plenty of copper slip used, none should squeel.

Well the omp pads have just turned up. Will fit them Fri or sat.

I take it the 2 leads on 2 of the pads are abs leads? My mintex pads didn't have them so will have to look to see if there's any connectors under the wheel arch.

I'm interested in doing the exact setup you've got - my pads and disk and due in the next few months.

Has no one experienced any squeal with the yellow stuffs?

I've read on the TT forum some of the guys had real problems with squealing.

Oh I had a nightmare with some those discs but apparently there was an issue with the batch mine came from. They were helpful and pretty good about a refund.

Mtec drilled/grooved + standard pads.

They dont squeal (after initial bedding in)

Just dont expect to go all the way to Spa, and be able to stop from 100mph + more than a couple of times before the pads overheat grr

Ok I suppose You don't stress them brakes that hard then... smile
I think they're ok but definately not better than std Fiat pads.
If You want serious stopping power; look for Carbotech, etc.
Then EBC looks like a joke... smile

Er...... fiat pads are pure mush after some hard braking, whereas the yellowstuff's still have some feeling in them and still work.

Yes more expensive pads will be better, but for general day to day use, EBC are a good choice (apart from green stuff)

UPDATE: fitted the omp pads this afternoon whilst at work, didn't have a lot on so got stuck in.

The pads needed grinding down each end as they were a bit of a tight fit.

Just took the coop out to test and so far no squealing!

I'm off out for a little drive to bed them in tonight so will post feedback.

you shouldn't need to file the ends of the pads, did you clean all the crud from underneath the pad guides as they should sit flush with the caliper and there should then be plenty of room for the pads to go in

Hey Doug, gave them a quick clean, didn't strip the calipers though.

Only had to file down both outer pads on the calipers, insides fitted snug.

Just been out for a few hours and given them a bit of a breaking in.

All seems good. Don't want to speak to soon but might have been where my mintex were too easy fitting that produced the squeal.

Loving the no noise slow breaking at the mo, will update as I go.

ok, hopefully you won't get any squeal although might be worth cleaning the crud behind them if you get any recurring probs

VERY true, but Carbotechs squeal like a duo of drunk donkeys at a karaoke party. But boy, do they stop, you'll be eating the windscreen before you can say "When" as in "When I tap the dashboard, brake" smile

My last squeal free setup were 3G discs and Pagid RS14 yellows, pretty good for road use and track days tbh. Carbotechs are simply another level.

And M-TEC and EBC yellows, cheaper option still and work fine on the road, bit vague when cold mind shocked

I've had them for a around 2 years and theyve only started to squeal in the last few months. The squeal isnt every time I brake either.

You can chamfer the leading and trailing edge of the new pads to help stop squealing.

Why do you think the standard fiat pads don't squeal, it's not due to material, it's because they have a large chamfer on them.

ST- the OMP road and sport are what ive just fitted with mtec grooved discs front and rear.

i only had to grind down the the edges of the front outer pads, the insides fitted good.

they've been on nearly a week now and so far so good.

im LOVING hearing the engine and exhaust and not EEEEEEEEKKKKKK!! lol.

The ones on my Sprinty are the loudest squealing pads I've ever heard. Think I'm gonna go for Yellow stuff's on the front and see if it cures it!

Driven to changing the front pads today as a last resort to the excruciating racket - the suppliers said "Fiat 20vt? Brembos? SIGH!" I said I've seen a lot worse comments than that...

So the only ones they could get locally on the day [in Falkirk] were Delphi. Now bedding them in, and they haven't squeaked once smile
