Given that the 2011 season is now well and truely over and has been for at least oooh 15 hours now. I think it's time to start a 2012 thread. Especially given the news which has already been released regarding it. So to start with : BBC F1 Calendar Brundle confirms move to Sky(that second link also confirms that Sky will be creating a dedicated SkySports F1 channel, which viewers will have to pay extra for ) Discuss

Wohoooo, my Sky subs are becoming better value by the day. I genuinely can't understand anyone who says they enjoy any sport (wimbledon excepted) who then says they haven't/won't subscribe to the best sports channels anywhere bar none.

I'm on the HD pack, so all of a sudden I'm watching the 2012 season. Thank god Brundle has moved to Sky

I have to pay the BBC ransom if i watch it or not And I have to pay an even bigger ransom to Sky if I want to watch it (which I increasingly don't anymore  ) which is a shame because I had been so looking forward to F1 in HD on BBC.

Nope, you pay to receive television signal - terrestrial or satellite. Even if you only watch sky, you still pay the licence fee. You also watch - even if you don't have a TV at all - the advertising budget for *every* UK commercial station, either terrestrial or satellite.

The license fee goes to pay for a whole lot more than just the TV channels Like what? Chris Moyles/Zane Lowe/Reg Yates et al on £loads per year for inane drivel? makes me feel much better then

I begrudge people like Moyles, Jonathon Woss etc being on millions of £££ a year for being inane, and I have no say in how the "grant" is used - if i don't like Sky i just cancel it....

Heeee's. Baackkk. K R But who will be gone petrov or senna ? Given this quote in the article, it seems people in F1 have short memories......... The Finn struggled to recapture that form in the next two seasons, where he was frequently outperformed by team-mate Felipe Massa, and left the team at the end of 2009 That is pretty damning stuff! Okay, Massa was better in those days, that spring/head interface never did him any favours but he's had flashes of his old style recently if not consistently. KR went off to WRC but in my opinion was bloody awful! Fair enough, you could spend hours debating the differences between the disciplines but I expected better performances from him, as I'm sure did his team! I reckon we could be witnessing another Schumacher-esque embarrassment, at least in his first season back. Hope I'm wrong..... Oh, and I'm still praying that "nasty old Frank Williams" will extend Reubens contract for one final year, just to let him go out with his head held high and no more begging in front of a worldwide television audience; that was cringeworthy and utterly demeaning!

It's extraordinary that it should be possible for a group of petrolheads to describe driving state of the art racing cars at insane speeds along narrow streets where one mistake could easily mean catastrophe as a yawnfest. Yet it's true. I think the problem is that for it to be possible to happen at all, it has to be proven to be safe, which - given the level of skill of the drivers and the design and reliability of the cars - it is. The in-car footage is still stunning, but as a sporting spectacle, with no overtaking, few mistakes and no breakdowns, it is almost guaranteed to be a non-event.
Presumably it is the amount of business that gets done in Monaco over race weekend and the images that are used to sell F1 to countries with no motor-racing heritage that ensure its continuation.

Interesting, dedicated F1 channel eh? Two things spring to mind, first is that this news 'might' be enough to tempt me to get Sky as I assume it means I don't have to receive endless hours of crappy football that I won't watch. Secondly, a dedicated channel??? How are they going to fill that? Or will it only broadcast on or around F1 weekends.

I'm sure they will probably fill out hours with 'classic' grand prixs and then possibly re-runs of F2, F3 under the guise of F1-Juniors or F1 feeder class.
Then there will be all the technical documentaries that Brundle seems to hint upon.

Ooh, that's purdy.
Shame we can only look at it, rather than know what it is like to sit in one, but I guess if anyone had had that experience they would have mentioned it on here before now.

This in The Times today: Sky Sports raid BBC for Formula One coverage
The job of guiding Formula One fans through next season’s world championship on Sky Sports has been handed to a man with a voice which is as familiar to followers of darts as it is motor racing.
David Croft has won the coveted role as chief commentator for the new Sky Sports coverage with Martin Brundle leaving the BBC to return to his old role as pundit and analyst.
Sky Sports have confirmed their line-up, which revealed a raid on the BBC talent coffers. As well as Brundle, Ted Kravitz joins Sky from his role in the pitlane for the BBC, along with Natalie Pinkham, who leaves BBC Radio Five Live to join the satellite channel. Kravitz will also present a new magazine show on Sky’s dedicated Formula One channel with Georgie Thompson, currently a Sky Sports presenter.
Simon Lazenby, already a regular on Sky Sports, particularly on the channel’s rugby presentations, will be the host with Jake Humphrey remaining at the BBC. Steve Rider, who hosted Formula One for ITV, returns to conduct major interviews, including pieces with former drivers and team owners.
Sky has won the rights to broadcast all 20 races live next season, although no one is certain yet which races they will be as the FIA World Motorsport Council meets in Delhi on Wednesday to consider the 2012 calendar.
There is speculation that the US Grand Prix scheduled for Austin in Texas might yet have been saved for its date in October, but the FIA still has to decide whether it is safe to sanction the go-ahead for the Bahrain Grand Prix after a bomb exploded outside the British Embassy in the capital of Manama last week.
The responsibility of guiding F1 viewers will fall to Croft, who has been commentating on BBC Five Live, but his is also a familiar voice at the microphone for the BDO World Darts Championships. Commentating for the BBC since 2006, Croft has one thing in common with one of the key figures in Formula One, Lewis Hamilton. They both come from the Stevenage area of Hertfordshire.
It is not yet known who will move into Croft’s seat at Five Live but David Coulthard, Eddie Jordan and Lee McKenzie will all stay with the television team committed to covering ten grands prix live next season with ten, 90-minute highlights packages.

New rules for 2012 I think there will be some confusion with: "Drivers will not be allowed to move back onto the racing line after having moved off it to defend their position." As surely they have to join the racing line again at some point, when can they do this? If a driver moves off the racing line to defend a position but still makes it to the apex of the corner first, and is therefore back on the racing line before the other car has completed a maneuver, what happens then? Also, there will be no more Canadian epics, with maximum race time set to 4 hours including any stoppages. And finally, we will have 4-5 laps of safety cars EVERY time a safety car is called because: "all lapped cars will be allowed to unlap themselves and then join at the back of the field during safety car periods, ensuring a clean restart without slower cars in front of the leaders." Not happy at all about that one.

"Drivers will not be allowed to move back onto the racing line after having moved off it to defend their position."
That's quite vague. Is it...
"Drivers will not be allowed to move back onto the racing line after having moved off it to defend their position."
Meaning they can't move back to the racing line at all AFTER they (even unsuccesfully) defended their position. Or that if they moved off it (eg. evasive action / picking up water on a drying track to cool their tyres) for any reason whatsoever, they cannot go back to it if anyone was coming up behind them. So all in all, this means they have to stay away from any racing line after defending their position.
or could it be interpreted as
"Drivers will not be allowed to move back onto the racing line after having moved off it to defend their position"
Which means they can't move back to the line in order to (further) defend their position. But they CAN move back to if they're no longer defending their position. Actually, this means that you lose a place as soon as you go off the line in order to defend your position, as you will not be allowed to go back to the racing line as long as you are defending - which will NATURALLY happen as soon as you've reached the corner - as soon as you're defending, you actually have to let the other guy through because you're BOUND to obstruct him (and thus defend your position) when going back to the racing line.
It's one of the most vague rules they ever had. The rule should specify when it IS allowed to rejoin the racing line. Ef " Drivers are allowed to move off the racing line to defend their position, but - unless they have lost their position - may not move back onto the racing line until the track layout would make it impossible to stay off the racing line without leaving the circuit."

Speculation that Reubens *might* still have a drive although my money is hovering over Adrian Sutil. I reckon from a publicity point of view Williams would be very wise to go with Reubens for one last season; 20yrs in the business is going to see a LOT of airtime/camera focus on the car and be attractive to investors/sponsors, especially if it is made clear he is in his final season..... I genuinely hope they do plump for Reubens, he's been a hell of a character in F1 even if he's always been seen as the "almost" man. It would be a real pity to lose him without a whimper and I'd just love a wee fairytale ending, like a podium finish in his final home grand prix, that would the icing on the cake!

oh they're going with Renault, interesting... who knows then!
I think it'll be a carrot on the Quatar sponsorship deal, "pick our second driver".

"The future of the European Grand Prix in Valencia is in doubt after the city's government indicated that it wants to renegotiate its race fee."
Hallelujah, lets hope they ask too much and it goes. It is boring to watch and even more boring to drive on F1 2011 It's a crap place to spectate at too

CEO of oil company OGX who are sponsors of Bruno Senna has tweeted this morning that Bruno *will* be driving for Williams next season. No doubt more to follow, as even Bruno says he doesn't know! Found this snippet on the BBC F1 homepage. A good move for Bruno if it's true.

BBC's presenting line-up announced But I found the predicted viewing stats at the end of this article (linked from above) more interesting reading! 4-6m per race for the BBC vs 0.5-1m per race for Sky.The likely impact (as discussed) on interview times, etc will be interesting to see. I certainly have no plans to go out and get Sky for a few F1 races this year

Apparently i have the the required Virgin package to get the F1 channel (although it wont be in HD without paying extra). So i think i will be watching the Sky only ones on sky and the joint ones i'll go with the BBC (unless i find the Sky offering is brilliant)

From what i've read you will get the F1 channel (non-HD) if you have the Sky Sports package (1,2,3,4 not just 1,2)
You'll only get HD if you're paying the £5 or whatever it is for HD Sports.

Yes. the chance of it happening does look a bit remote.
It looks like an interministerial meeting has agreed in principle to form a committee to finance a Grand Prix with public money. It talks of the big question being negotiating with F1 paymaster Bernie Ecclestone.
It seems that Spa could be taken off the calendar after 2012 as it's contract expires then and the Walloon government has to be prepared to make financial guarantees to the ownners of Formula 1 which could be difficult with far east rivals being prepared to pay a lot for the privilege of hosting GPs.
The French want to bring it back to the Paul Ricard circuit at Castellet in the Var which held GPs until 4 years ago, alternating with the Belgian Spa- Francorchamps circuit.

Has anyone listened to Gary Anderson's view on the new McLaren via the iPlayer? He seems to think they've gone down the wrong path with their 'pretty' interpretation of the new rules. Could be McLaren are the odd ones out

Can I propose negative points for having a car that's sodding ugly? To be decided by the Coupe Club F1 threads. Make F1 a bit more like QI.
Seriously, F1 wants to be a global sport. And has chosen to achieve this by having a grid of cars that look like they have been in a fight. And lost. WTF?

Hmmm. So that's Caterham, Ferrari and Force India all going down the duck billed platypus route, and only McLaren (so far) building something 'pretty'. I hope the old adage of it looks right it goes right works here, and the others soon adopt a similar approach. Or hav McLaren got it badly wrong for the sake of aesthetics?
Time will tell I guess.

Seems they've found a half way house between platypus and pretty.
I just hope McLaren have got it right about compromising the floor!

Well almost. Wonder what the air intake atop the nose does? It allows air to enter....obvious, innit!

Well almost. Wonder what the air intake atop the nose does? Possibly to cool KERS as RB had problems with it over-heating last year.....either that or it helps the smoke from a burning KERS unit escape?

I don't know who is in charge of BBC Web design (or, more importantly, who they use to assess "usability") but the BBC site, so long a paragon of good Web usability, is a right mess. Even with cookies set, it takes me about 4 clicks to get to a detailed breakdown of the weather yet, after one click, I get to find out where the coldest and warmest place in the world is... WTF? The BBC Sport site is now truly cack.

The other thing to note is that he's out in front on the slower medium tyre, everyone else is trying on the faster softs. seems strange to me. True!

Quoting from Autosport Live; By way of a meaningless comparison, the fastest time on the first day of last year's Jerez test was a 1m20.709s by Massa. Fastest today so far is Raikkonen in 1m19.670s. Don't read too much into that though. In other words, like we all know, first day of testing pre-season means sod all! There were a few people that I spoke with last year who appeared confident that Ferrari had it "in the bag" after pre-season testing and the McLarens performed so miserably....then again, we now know that McLaren had to do a massive amount of work to catch up before the season started!

Quoting from BBC Sport - Day one of pre-season testing; That 1:20.5 is a decent time from Kimi Raikkonen this early in the running. The fastest time in last year's Jerez test was a 1:19.8 from Rubens Barrichello's Williams....

Ok its not exactly F1 news but:
KV Racing have announced that veteran racer Rubens Barrichello, who was dropped in favour of Bruno Senna at Williams, will join the team alongside Tony Kanaan for the upcoming IndyCar season.

Ok its not exactly F1 news but:
KV Racing have announced that veteran racer Rubens Barrichello, who was dropped in favour of Bruno Senna at Williams, will join the team alongside Tony Kanaan for the upcoming IndyCar season. I think that's really sad. I liked Reubens, he never lived up to expectations but he was a really nice guy (probably why he didn't live up to expectations) He should have announced his retirement (maybe a year ago ) and stepped down with grace rather than see out his years in Indy Surrounded by madmen and wannabe drivers he'll only come a cropper F1 channel....subscribe or not to subscribe I wish Virgin would come up with a dedicated F1 channel on it's own. i don't want all that other crap but I'd happily pay a tenner or whatever just for F1

Red Bull redesign their 2012 chassis Are they taking the mickey or did they really have issues? And should the other teams be worried that RB were already fast anyway before the fairly hefty redesign? I have my doubts that Adrian Newey has suddenly lost his ability to "see" air flow, so I think I'd be very worried.....
