I know they are old and slow, nothing like my coupe but I want one really badly, something to tick off my list.

Is it really going to be that much of a downgrade?

Adam

Had one myself, which I unexpectedly saw at a show at Castle Combe a year or so ago, some 10 years after I sold it to a guy I thought was going to scrap it!

Brought back a few happy memories, but now, it's a massive step back from the coop!

They are so cool, would be cheaper all round on everything and its something I've wanted to do for ages, my mates had a few and I loved them.

Although I was swaying away from one until pinnin chimed in........

The thing is, if you like the car and have driven your friends and enjoyed it then you should go for it. Doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks. Most of my friends think I'm crazy to be driving around in a 13 year old Fiat.

If you like it, you should go for it. Bet there are plenty of spare parts still to be had.

I liked the oak green GTi's with the big bumpers personally.

Yeah, the green ones are expensive though,

Its a white 3 door with the big bumpers, my only reservation is the speed and looks I won't have with the gti, there is nothing you can get for 1500 with the speed of a coupe

I'm a big fan of the late 80's and early 90's hot hatches, but if it were me i would have it as a second car. I'm too used to comfy leather, power and the safety an air bag gives for day to day driving.

If you can find a 16v close to standard spec that'd be the best bet.

There is nothing you can really get for 8-10K with the speed of a coupe (with a few mods)! That's the interesting thing about them smile

I'd have had the same dilema if I'd kept my Astra GTE, I really wouldn't know which to drive, the Coupe or the Astra, each for their own reasons.

Could you afford to keep the Coupe and get the Golf? Best of both worlds then cool

If not, then a difficult decision to make!

Lol, I'm 24 and live and home......affording it isn't a problem although 2 insurance bills would hurt, my mother on the hand would kill me, ill never remember when I bought a 200sx with smashed windscreen, went to work and she rang me in a panic saying she thought someone had dumped a stolen car on her driveway......priceless

They're sensible and that's all. Good engine but totally dull car. I actually traded one in for an Alfa 33! The Alfa salesman looked so happy...but there you have it. By any tickbox list the Golf was a much better car, but I had it a couple of years and never missed it for a moment. I kept the Alfa for 12 years and still remember it fondly.

I was looking a few years back and went for a 205 1.9 GTI instead - much more fun!

+1 on that. Still quick enough today. My only criticism is you'd struggle to do long distance in one.

I find mine good for a little commute each day. Imo the golf is probably a little better in the rattle and squeak department and seems to be made of thicker steel.

Golf is just a dull massively overrated hatchback - I have never understood what all the fuss is about. confused

So stick with a Coupe - unique styling, stylish interior and plenty of go. cool

My dad had a Mk2 8v GTi when they were not very old.

He hated it. Slow, people kept trying to steal it and the handling wasn't all that good.

Agree that they are very overrated.

I think some people are missing the point of the Mk2 Golf; it is nearly 30yrs old, nearly, and compared with what was on offer then it wasn't too shabby at all.

Anyway, who wouldn't want a car where it takes you 30mins and £20 to change the cam belt? tongue

It's sooo easy to work on it makes the coupé look like a Rubik's cube by comparison! Oh, and the handbrake works! tongue

Adam, you have to buy one.

In life, you regret the things you don't do more than the things you do! Don't look back in years to come and regret passing on the opportunity to ever own one.

Choosing the right car is one of the most difficult decisions a man can make. Only men suffer this, women (except for those on here of course) cannot as they see it as a more simplistic process - "ah, it's soooooo cute" laugh

My dad went from a Ford Capri 2.0 Laser to his Golf. At the time the Golf was meant to be the best thing since sliced bread.

The Capri handled better, was just as quick and didn't have people queueing up to steal it.

The Capri chassis was even older than the Golfs.

See, I hated the Capri, far too wallowy and imprecise for my style of driving, whereas with the Golf I can "point and squirt" knowing I'm going to get through the corner in the same direction as I entered it rather than backwards! laugh

Long (long) time ago now, but around 1990 the works insurance Company gave me the 16v version of these while the Pug 205 gti 1.9 was at the panel beaters.

Due to the wait for parts (French factory went on strike laugh ) I ended up with the VW for about 10 weeks.

Cried (with relief) when I got the Pug back.

Had a 1973 Mk1 Capri 1.6 GT. Bright orange, more fins than Flipper, more wings than Red Bull, more spoilers than a very spoilt thing, rattled along in a straight line, cornered like Dumbo. The cambelt blew on the way to MY engagement party, and I sold her (not the fiancee) the week after. My next car was a Mk1 Escort Mexico - the best car I ever owned until 2010 (see below) smile

Oddly enough, found myself next to a Capri in a traffic queue tonight... matt black with *six* stripes (two fat ones and four thin ones) front to back over the bonnet and roof in bright fluorescent green... noisy exhausts, too.

To be honest, I didn't like it any better than when they were new. I always promised myself a 240Z.

Andrew - I wondered if anyone would remember the adverts. I got the 240Z, too, years later, but it's gone now.
