My Derv has a serious starting issues,

Its the 1900 straight diesel.

I have googled the issues with some mixed results,

I bought the van and picked it up already running, Upon leaving it overnight It really didnt want to start, Nearly killed the battery gettingf it rolled backwards to initiate a downward bump start.... EVENTUALLY it JUST fired into life and worked fine, Untill the next morning after being left over night.

Glow plugs I was told, changed them, Its still the same, I heard of the glow plug relay being faulty? Anyone have any history with these?

Would it ave bumped if that was dead??

Have you checked the battery? Mine won't go unless it's decent, if it's old I'd change it. Shouldn't even really need glow plugs this time of year

Yes, if the new glow plugs haven't made a difference the electronic module is next in the firing line.

So it fires on the key and then dies? or it turns over but takes ages to catch?

Before you spend any cash it's well worth trying a jump start when you next have this problem. A diesel engine needs a first rate battery to start. It sounds strange you should hear the difference with the jump.

+1

Totally agree with this. You can charge the battery and it will appear fully charged even with a duff cell, and that duff cell will stop a diesel from starting from cold.

Top tip; once it is running, turn off the engine then try starting again, if it starts straight away and the battery is old get it changed, or get it tested properly; Halfords will test the battery free of charge.

I genuinely don't think it's anything to do with glow plugs. I really, really, think it'll go away with a battery. It's also the easiest and cheapest solution!

I bet it's still on it's first or second battery - 13 years old at 5 years a battery, it's due...
