What to Nigel's contrabulous frabtraption? Hmmmm I think it may have been on the forum of old before the crash. I'll have a dig and see if I can find anything.

im sure it was an airbox with a sliding vent that he used like a bicycle cable to operate , keeping vents closed for lowdown and opening them up for more top end , was many years ago but thats what i think i remember smile

That's it now I remember! It had several vertical slats cut into the side which were covered with metal that would move with a pull of the cable! You've jogged my memory, cheers G.

Mityrare, try K&N Pt No 33-2689 as advertised here; http://www.knfilters.com/air_filter/fiat_coupe.aspx

Thank you for the link.

Thinking about getting this. Aside from the actual cone filter, what else is needed to change from the standard air box and is it easy to do?

You need an adapter plate and the right silicone hose. It's not cheap by any means but easy to fit. Just take the old airbox + gubbins off and attach the silicone hose to the AFM, screw the adaper plate onto the filter and then attach to the other end of the hose.
The best sound I've had was with a Blitz stainless mesh filter, but they're like rocking horse doo-doo.

I think the noise is very much down to the shape of the inlet, the Apexi has a cone shaped smooth inlet with an opposing cone mounted on the top of the filter. The K&N is a sharp edged lip inlet with a flat metal top.

The sound matches the inlet lip shape, the K&N being a very harsh suction sound where the Apexi is a little less harsh.

I don't believe more holes in air boxes works for one simple reason, the inlet tubing diameter is the limit, no matter how many holes you drill in the box- you aren't going to increase the amount of air going through the inlet tubing. Remove the air box all together (as you do when fitting a K&N or Apexi) and you see very little improvement, you actually see a loss in torque as you've shortened the inlet.

It would be interesting to see up to what point of tuning a standard air box becomes the limiting factor.

I'm sure I've read Flea has mapped 300BHP plus engines using the standard airbox and panel filter. Calling Flea!
