Courtesy of PeteP and his association and efforts with Spa Italia I've had the pleasure of attending the Spa weekend for the past 3 years running. Unfortunately this year it's looking very likely it's not going to happen so I've been looking at similar venues that can give the same on track exhilaration and social side and I've found that Trackdays are offering a fantastic deal for Le Mans on the 2nd and 3rd August. Accommodation for myself with either be campsite/chalet or Ibis hotel so if you fancy this do please let me know as I'll be making reservations very soon and I'm sure a group booking can secure a reduction in costs

Just to add a bit of info. It is 274 miles (433 klm) from Calais ferry port to Le Man on the auto route and will take a very easy 5 hours and a fast 4 hours or less.
Non auto route is near on the same distance and would save you about £20 on tolls.
Whatever you choose its a very nice drive. It is the start of the French holidays that weekend ,so the roads will be busy and ferry cost at their peak prices due to school holidays etc.
But there are still deals to be had. You could use another departure port or the tunnel etc. Obvious advice would be to book early.

£75 is a great price Joe. Seems like it could be fun. Just 3 hours up the road for me.

But on the other hand, you spend so much longer going up and down, side to side, up and down instead of sitting nicely on the underground train! Understandable coming from someone who's been used to ups and downs at one time or another Yes, Neil has his own interpretation of circuits and bumps.

Ok, so here's the plan.
Travel down to Le Mans on Thursday 1st August crossing the channel on Eurotunnel at £94 return for one car and up to 9 (yes 9!) occupants. Then a very enjoyable convoy down to Le Mans on the French roads (French roads, not Belgian pot holed monstrosities!) of approx 420kms.
Accomodation currently being arranged for these 3 nights (Thursday-Saturday, returning Sunday 4th), will be two options of campsite with static homes, or a hotel nearby.
Open pit lane at Le Mans for Saturday 3rd August. I have negotiated a 5% discount on their listed price of £250 (so £237.50 giving a £12.50 discount for a free lunch). This is to drive the longer 2.7 mile Bugatti circuit, which is part of the historic 24 hour race circuit and an infield section. Additional drivers are only £1 too!
The main circuit is mainly public roads, and so can be driven at anyones leisure (with many excellent photographic opportunities).
Aside from the trackday on the Saturday, there are many sights to see, as well as very enjoyable socials, i.e evenings out and no doubt a big BBQ!
Sights include (and I thank Wikipedia):
- Le Mans has a well-preserved old town (Cité Plantagenêt, also called Vieux Mans), where the cobbled streets and half-timbered house fronts provided setting for Gérard Depardieu in Cyrano de Bergerac (1989) and a cathedral: Cathédrale St-Julien, is dedicated to St Julian of Le Mans, who is honoured as the city's first bishop. - There are remnants of a Roman wall in the old town and Roman baths by the river. These walls are highlighted every summer (July and August) evening in a light show that tells the history of the town. - Arboretum de la Grand Prée - Jardin des Plantes du Mans - Musée de la reine Bérengère, a museum of Le Mans history located in a gothic manor house. - Musée de Tessé, the fine arts museum of the city, displaying painting (including artworks by Philippe de Champaigne, Charles Le Brun, François Boucher, John Constable, Ingres, Théodore Géricault and Camille Corot) and archaeological collections as well as decorative arts.
All this, before returning on Sunday 4th August.
One further thing - this is not exclusive to Coupe's, so anyone is welcome to "run what they brung"
Please confirm if you'd like to join this merry gathering by scribing your names on the list below (or updating to confirm if you wish to participate in the track day);
Appreciate if this can be done soon as is possible to reserve spaces for the track day with the organisers.
1. Countrycruising (track day) 2. HoveDan (track day) 3. Coupedummy (track day) 4. Neil & Chris (track day) 5. Minimetaller 6. Senny Dave 7. Flea (track day) 8. 9. 10.
Any queries please throw them up here...

oh and Neil doesn't like going up and down, only around and around Round and round and round it goes, and where it stops, nobody knows! Given that Le Mans is a quicker track than Spa, I'm a little concerned about all these 20vts with go faster bits haring past with forty mph speed differentials...

The full circuit is Neil (with it's 200mph straights!), but it's only part of the circuit and an infield section we are driving won't be so disadvantageous to you!

Update for today is Dan and I are working with Trackdays to get a better discount, more to follow tomorrow.
I asked about deposits to secure your place, can't be done I'm afraid, full payment will be required on booking.
There are two campsites offering chalet accomodation, I've contacted both so waiting for reply. Can't wait.So pissed I'm not going to experience SPA as planned but I have a feeling this is going to be awesome.

End of week update:Hoping this update will cover every question raised so far. Joe and I have been working through the layers of track day agents to now be in direct contact with the organisers on the day of the track day. Whilst this will not result in any further discount than the 5% already negotiated, there may be significant other benefitsThese benefits are: 1 - A specific coupe only session on track in the afternoon. 2 - I'll say this word very quietly. Possibly free camping in the circuit for the 3 nights, using their camping facilities behind the pits (with showers, etc). This campsite is a pitch your own tents or mobile homes only (no static homes). But, there, said the "free" word This campsite is often used by race teams during their events. 3 - Free additional drivers 4 - Future discounted events Now, I'd have liked to have firmed up agreement for all the above this week, but we are expecting confirmation on all the above early next week. So now, this is PROVISIONAL. Additionally, there is an alternative campsite 8km from the circuit, which has static homes (like Spa). However, they are currently closed until April and we've been told not to expect any response until then. This is their website : http://www.eurocampings.co.uk/en/europe/...-romain-118235/So, what I'd like all who've expressed interest so far to do is to add whether they'd be wishing to use this campsite, the alternative campsite option or would prefer a hotel nearby - so we have some numbers.

Just a quick note to stress that this 4 day/ 3 night jaunt is as much, if not more than, for the social side rather than simply for a track day. The social element of Spa is what I've enjoyed equally to driving the circuit.
We have 3 evenings to fill with restaurants, good food and conversation. A whole day free to explore Le Mans as well.
Even on the track day itself, there will be more idle time in the pits for chat than there will be on track!
So please, don't feel this is track day oriented as this offers a great opportunity for anyone to attend and spend a few warm summer days exploring and in good company with potentially free accommodation - just travel down or jump in a car with 4 people and split the travel costs to an absolute minimum!
Great post Dan For us hardened Spa followers we'll miss the Belgium trip that's for sure, but maybe this can be a close second. The track might not be as long or as exhilarating in comparison but added together with the social gathering of one passion it'll bring forth memories and stories that'll be remembered much like times past, it is what we make it

Thanks for clarifying that it is not just about driving round the track Dan.
As you know, that is not really my thing. I will put myself down as a provisional.

Delighted to see this is taking off so well after the disappointment of Spa, and it sounds really attractive Unfortunately it's so near other commitments up here I couldn't afford the time off in spite of generous offers of assistance Will be expecting the customary vids and pics to drool over afterwards though!

Have I missed the details of hotel accommodation? Also, is the intention just to meander down during Thursday after getting a later train or what? Or are we going to arrange convoys/meets nearer the time? Be better to travel together in many respects, I imagine?

I've been chatting with a few Hotels around Le Mans about a group booking and I've found the Brit Hotel to be the best for their discount. They're 25 minutes/14km north of the circuit and closer to Le Mans town center for anyone planning on dinning out in the evening. There's a main ring road for easy access to the circuit so no hold ups with having to drive through the center. The hotel was fully refitted last year so it's still nice and fresh so I've been told.
I inquired for prices showing a discount for a group booking of around 10 rooms, their rates are very reasonable so if you fancy this Hotel they'll require a deposit to secure your booking, booking reference is:
/MF/175/02/13 Fiat Coupe club UK.
It would be good if we could all stay in one hotel, at these rates I'll be changing my choice to the Brit so I've a comfy bed instead of a tent.
I've still not heard anything back yet from the chalet campsite, and I'm still awaiting 100% confirmation that we're able to camp at the circuit so more to follow on that as I'm still chasing.

I'm already practicing er Sorry chaps, but having done a good few laps in the Sim, I have to be honest and say; boy this Bugatti track is pretty dull. Those not doing the track day part of the trip wont be missing much, and you can have a few more refreshments the night before, knowing you don't have to drive it next day

If this trip happens Steve i have a tent spare just for you mate !
@ Countrycruising. Can we get some confirmation on the actual trackday cost with what discount on how many people? Is it only the 5% with however many numbers ?
I would also want confirmation on th free camping or not bfore i commit to this.
With my cards on the table,my opinion is that this could flounder soon if not attended to.
No malice intended.

I can confirm for anyone planning on camping at the track that you have permission and it's fine. I've also been told that you won't be alone as there's a couple of other car clubs there over the weekend along with some bikes. We have a 5% discount for a group booking so track time will cost £237.50 for the day. I've requested a copy of the track liability waiver paperwork so we know what we're covered for before the day. The liability only covers damage to the track, our own vehicles are not covered so further insurance will be required but it's not compulsorily. I hope this answers your questions Joe

It looks like I won't be able to make it, just spent a lot of money on a new set of 225/45 16 Falkens for the coupe.
Pity.

I know we're 6 months off the date for Le Mans but the Brit Hotel needs confirmation from the people who plan to stay.
They require people to book so if we don't get 10 rooms we won't get the discount I'm afraid.
So far for the Brit we have:
1. Countrycruising 2. 3. MCMike 4. Sedicivalvoline 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.
Can the names below please confirm their accomodation plans.
Minimetaller Flea (track day) JBT (track day) Crazylegs (track day) Taffy (track day) - hotel TrevM (track day) - hotel Gray20vt (track day) - hotel Nismo (track day) Petep (no track) - Hotel, provisional
Have to pull out of this sorry as I am putting the car up for sale.

Monthly update on the Le Mans trip. Trackdays have rung me to ask if anyone else is planning on booking track time, if you are give them a bell as spaces are filling quickly now.

Hi just come back from france and just incase your not aware, thought i would let you know about roadworks in Rouen its on route to Le Mans via Calais there appears to be road closures also the main bridge over the River is closed, there are diversions in place but were a bit confusing on the way down as they caught me unaware and sat nav became useless as it just kept telling me to turn around, not too much of a delay just had no idea where we were going for a while! Not to much bother coming back! Have fun look forwarn to seeing some photos

The weather forcast is extremly hot at the weekend starting from Thursday the hotest, possible 36c then a bit cooler friday and Saturday but still very warm. I would imagine a storm or two also. We have had a couple of violent storms last week after high temps.

I can't believe it's already been a week since we travelled down Le Mans, I've now had time to write up what we got up to along the way, the highs and lows, the adrenaline rush because of driving on such a famous track, and of course the good company, the chilling, banter and great food which is half of doing something like this. Le Mans is very easy to get to from the UK, a morning ferry means you'll get to your chosen accommodation well before sunset so lots of time to freshen up and find a place for dinner. The roads down were superb, if you take the toll roads the total is around £30.00 each way, non-toll roads are slower but the scenery is very special so I'd allow 6 hours from Calais. On our arrival at the Brit Hotel I felt rather under-dressed to say the least, we faced a car park full of super cars and track toys that totalled maybe £2M including a brand new F12 Ferrari, as the majority of the number plates were Jersey and Guernsey I soon understood the situation, lol Despite the stares we were all there safe and sound so we checked in, drank a large cold beer and freshened up before heading round the corner for some dinner at the steak grill restaurant. Saturday's start was easy and the weather was spot on for the day, dry and sunny, perfect So off to the track, changed my car over onto E85 race fuel, did the drivers briefing and then a sighting with Mrs CC's in her 2.4. Delta Racing who organise the weekends events were great to be fair, they were very laid back, it wasn't a race so just "enjoy yourself and be safe". Any issues come and see them, any problems come and see them so with this we went off, checked our cars and prepared to drive in my opinion one of the most famous tracks in Europe, the pit lane horn was already sounding which was giving me flash backs and goose bumps of watching the Steve McQueen film "Le Mans", you needed to be there The morning session was faultless, no break downs or red flags, other drivers on track were very courteous and gave plenty of room for us to overtake. The Fiat Coupes were holding their own, we tussled with a few but as mine has a few more horses I was just enjoying trying to get my lines and breaking distances right. Lunch was spent at a pleasant restaurant in Arnage, two hours for lunch so plenty of time to relax, eat buckets of moules marniere and reflect on how to improve the afternoon session. 1.5 miles back to the track, check fluids and tyres and off we went again. The track in the afternoon was faster, there seemed to be a fresh batch of cars on track that were putting their foot down so as I'd learnt the lines in the morning it was time to start having some fun. The raw power of my Coupe was awesome, running the E85 map meant my temps were 10 to 15 degrees lower, so the highest temp I saw all day was around 95 degrees and it was a very hot day. The engine ran superbly, no hesitation and pulling right through to redline, it just stormed on like a steam train in every gear and sounding so at home on track. Many other cars just indicated and moved out the way, the Radicals would buzz around me in the bends as they handle so well but as soon as I came out of the corners with them I just squeezed the loud pedal and I was past them quicker then anything, the same went for the GT3's, BMW's, Lambos and a 458 owner who actually checked his dash as I went past smiling. Ronnie was a true Rocket and I can't thank Jake and Dan enough, we built a great car which was endorsed by the legend Keith Flint on the day as "F***ing Fast" I didn't have the same effect on track with a GT4RS though, he had more power and better handling so I hung on to the rear of him for as long as I could but I started to get untidy and nearly binned it in the kitty litter so lifted off to cool down, great fun trying though I'd been running on and off for 4 hours in the afternoon hard and like most things in life, good things came to an end when something either in the box or diff went bang while I was changing from 2nd to 3rd! I'm unsure what the problem is yet but the RAC are repatriating the car before the end of the month so I'll find out then. Oh well, Fix It Again Tomorrow, and I did follow my technicians instructions which were" go hard or go home" In all we all had loads of fun on track, Mrs CC now needs a new set of tyres as the new ones fitted before we went are now knackered, she drove the wheels off her 2.4 and certainly held her own against some much bigger and faster cars, next track day she'll have some 888's for sure. Saturday night was spent drinking a few beers and chatting about the day, Sunday we recovered and looked round the Le Mans Museum which was really interesting. They hold many Le Mans winning cars as well as prototypes, rarities and to be quite frank, oddities Monday morning my car was picked up on a low loader for storage so we packed and came back to the UK to be faced with...... Massive thanks to Reuben and Laura for being the pit van crew, fuel van and convoy leader to and from Le Mans Nick, Mike for also coming along to join in the weekend's fun and frolics, and to Joe and Gill for travelling up to watch from the South in their wicked new camper, I've gota get me one of them along with a trailer so I can take my broken cars home should an issue arise again, and lets face it, it will happen again I'm sure, lol My biggest appreciation goes to Mrs CC for her patients and understanding with a project like this, we will buy that new sofa one day It might not have been Spa but it was a very close second, Le Mans was great value for money as an OPL day, Oulton park is the same money so you can judge for yourself which I'd choose again I wouldn't describe this circuit as boring, far from it. It's fast and technical and one to be driven if you like pushing your Coupe. It's taught me what I need to improve with my driving and the next changes to the car, also a greater understanding of the importance of the aerodynamics and future designs to increase corner speeds, but that's what it's about so onwards and upwards Hope you enjoyed the post, further pics and videos on the weekends events can be found below as well as our FCSS Facebook page Le Mans pictures Le Mans Museum Video courtesy of MJ productions.https://www.facebook.com/fiatcoupes

Looks like it was a great trip Joe and that was an interesting read. What was the total travelling time from Worcestershire to Le Mans? 10 hours?
How much didi the temperatures there (I believe it was hot) affect the performance do you think?
As usual, I missed out, god damn this working abroad malarky!

Gearbox/diff aside, great to see it performing so well. Awesome performance, and the first UK car to use E85 in anger Joe's coupe really did put the pace down, watching from the tribune the coupe made space from alot of expensive machines in an outright drag on the pit straight. I was standing with a ferrari owner and as usual giving him an earfull about coupes. As joe entered the pit straight i told him that none of the cars will pass him. At the end of the straight the guy just laughed and said thats fast!
