I have noticed Range Rover L322's are now readily available for around £10k. Their design has aged well and seem better value than a Defender or Discovery 2? Thus they seem to offer a chance for high raised motoring without hammer blowing depreciation??? They have a poor reputation for reliability, yet they still retain their appeal, particularly perhaps as a second or third car, but not a main runabout? They will certainly be handy if we have a repeat of last winters flooding. From my investigations the things to look out for seem to be failing diffs, worn out air suspension, exploding td6 gearboxes, signs of abuse offroad and dodgy electrics. Probably a daft question then - can they be run on a manageable budget? Can non franchise dealers keep them in good order?

The garage I work at has had a few in for resale and they vary - if you had 2 with similar mileage one of them could require a wash and the other could require a couple of thousand pounds spent on it.
Failed electronic handbrake modules are not uncommon - the handbrake sticks on and you wreck the rear discs & pads plus need a new module. I'm told that's an easy £1200 bill.

I'm one year into Discovery 3 ownership... Not the same car but similar issues with running...
In 12 months I've spent around £2000 on servicing, running repairs and 12 months road tax.
I'd say you'd want at least £1000 in the bank for unexpected bills and repairs.
Lots of the owners have extended warranties.
You'll want a decent local indie as well... You'll cry if you have to pay main dealer pricing.
Coupe now sold!

Cheers RusH Any Land Rover's are clearly not for the light hearted or the severely strapped. Other than the servicing costs, what do you think of your Discovery 3? Do you consider it is worth the running costs?
A Disco 3 is less flash than the Range Rover (which is a good thing) but a tad bigger than I really need? Has it got a better gearbox (more reliable) then the TD6 RR? I recon I'd only do approx. 5k pa, which might keep the running costs down.
