Im looking at upgrading my rear speakers. Im not interested in a sub or amp. I think the misses will kill me if I keep spending all my money on the car!

I have a new Pioneer stereo and I have ordered some sound deadening material. What do you think is better 6x9 or replacing the 6.5" and mounting them in MDF

Whatever you put in the back will pull the soundstage to the rear of the car and sound pants, unless it's a dedicated sub.

However, it also depends on what you want to achieve;

Do you want a little extra bass? In that case, 6X9's will give you that over 6.5's but will pull soundstage to rear yadda, yadda, yadda.

Whichever size you go for, mount them on mdf baffles directly to inner metal skin as standard speakers are screwed directly to rear quarter trim.

EDIT; if it were me, I'd upgrade front end speakers and use sound deadening on inside of front doors. Forget rear speakers entirely and get a decent active sub setup. That way you have the classic 2:1 system; left / right front end and a sub for bass duties.

If you aren't going down the sub and amp route then as MABR says upgrade your front speakers first and then do the rears. I went with 6x9s mounted on MDF to add bass.

Ok cheers for advise. I think i'll replace all of them! What is the size for the fronts are they 6.5inch as well?

I think i'll stick with 6.5 for the rear and same for the front. By the sound of it 6x9 will pull to much to the rear

Are the tweeters easy to replace?

Yes they are 6.5 at the front. There's a guide on tweeter install in here.

It's worth putting some sound deadening in the doors and rear 3/4 while you're at it. There's plenty on this topic but ultimately you want to stop the panels vibrating. I used builders flashing tape.

Ive got a load of sound deadening all ready have some silent coat silver stuff! and some egg box sound adsorber for the back of the plastics.

Funny how things start. I was just simply taking the rear panels off to get to the rear wing Pininfarina badge to check for leaks and sealing up. Lucky for me no rust or leaks!

It's a slippery slope, enjoy the new sound system!
