Feel sorry for Iran after the show they put up. How galling can it be...the only consolation is it couldn't have been scored by a better player.

We're certainly seeing the era of former "minnows" becoming giantkillers, given half a chance.

Nigeria also really entertaining. This sort of athletic football makes our game look quite pedestrian.

It's as if England's oppositions have worked out that their opponent tends to dilly-dally on the ball so they rush the ball-carrier in passing errors. It's noticeable how much more space there seems to be in the game when teams play at a faster pace.

Ah, what happened to those days when we'd have England, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland (remember Jack Charlton?) in the finals?

I just watched the Italia 90 programme on the BBC, narrated by Edward Woodward. What a disgrace that tournament was. It was an absolutely terrible final between Germany & Argentina, with over 20 bookings and two red cards.

The game still has a few dirty players, prepared to dive and play act, but it is clearly significantly better than it was back then. Only thing that was better back then was the England team rolleyes

Pathetic. When you think of all the money that has gone into training up the best possible England squad, to result in THIS .....

Case dismissed.

Let the feast of football resume...no more England (or Italy or Spain games) to interrupt what has simply been THE best World Cup I have witnessed

No more England, no more Italy, no more Spain and almost certainly no more Suarez.

What on earth goes through his head?

I really don't do football and am probably the worst person to pass comment but the games I've seen have been pretty uninspiring. With exception of some decent moments in the Germany Ghana match.
As for all the money spent + what these guys earn, how is it that Suarez was expected to play against Italy on an empty stomach?

Suarez must wear a gum shield or a Hannibal mask before he's let near a football match again

Well it seems FIFA are at least acting swiftly. He has until 5pm today to respond to the allegations and reports are that he could be banned for up to two years although it's unlikely to affect him at club level (WTF?!)

With the eyes of the world on FIFA they have to throw the book at him. Anything less than a season's ban from all football will make them look weak IMO.

With the eyes of the world on FIFA they have to be confident that the size of the bribe heading their way is going to be much higher than anything they've managed before.

Banned for 9 international games and 4 months from all football.

Very soft IMO.

He'll miss the first 9 premier league games.

I know it's a different governing body handing down the punishment, but considering it's the off season he has effectively been banned for fewer games than his last bite.

BBC are saying that the 9 game ban means he will miss the rest of the world cup but presumably it means games that Uruguay qualify for so if they get knocked out in the next round he'll have 8 left to serve going on for, potentially, several years?
