Remapped 3.0 v6 S4? Autocar have a good video of one before and after remap vs an RS4 IF you're not sure on the grunt.

Remapped 3.0 v6 S4? Autocar have a good video of one before and after remap vs an RS4 IF you're not sure on the grunt. Aren't they just as thirsty in real-life use (rather than the EU fuel economy joke) as the 4.2 V8 they replaced?

Aren't they just as thirsty in real-life use (rather than the EU fuel economy joke) as the 4.2 V8 they replaced? Honestly, I have no idea but it's got to be cheaper to run? To ask for a car to be as fast, as big and cheaper to run is a big ask. Forced induction and smaller capacity all other things being equal is the only way as has been said above.

I still think a Focus RS500 is your answer, most are 400 horse, 30 mpg combined and they don't really depreciate. What's not to like? Unless you don't like the blue oval...

I still think a Focus RS500 is your answer, most are 400 horse, 30 mpg combined and they don't really depreciate. What's not to like? Unless you don't like the blue oval... Funny. I was thinking of the Focus too but thought it might be a bit of a "departure" from a Beemer.

Again another suggestion I looked into but put off by similar running costs and less build quality.
I looked at the 335i m sport for a long time and was my preference but like you said not as good looking and even though they can be made to be quick...not quite as quick as the m3 and certainly not as involving to drive. Vx220 is far too small. A modestly tuned 335i is quicker than an M3. A moderate/highly tuned 335i will wipe the floor with an M3. An M3 will handle better though. You can get RB turbos for £2000 for the 335i if you want brutal performance. It will beat 99.9% of cars your likely to come up against on the road. Type "RB turbo 335i" into youtube. RB turbo'd 335i vs Tuned E90 M3 RB turbo'd 335i Vs 2014 GTR No LSD though......

I went from a 330 CI to a coupe - the differences between German Luxo brands and the likes of Ford and Vauxhall are not what they used to be. They are still £34k?!?!? That's list price! Wish I had a spare £34k as it would be invested in that direction.
