I've got some shares in various companies, mostly acquired free through flotations or share options in the past. I have two shareholdings on old-fashioned certificates, and two more that seem to be electronic. Some places charge a 1% fee, which will cost me well over £100, I've seen dealing charges much lower but they are often for frequent traders, which I am not. This is likely to be a one-off sale of most or all the shareholdings, so I don't want a frequent trader account. Any tips as to where I should go to avoiding wasting too much money in charges?

I'd say 1% is pretty cheap for what you're looking for. The cheaper dealing rates aren't necessarily for regular traders, they're for online, non-certificated transactions.

Unfortunately, you're a bit limited for choice due to having certificates.

Also, you'll be charged a transfer fee (usually £10 - £25) by the company for the non-certificated corporate nominee shares you have, just to transfer them to you stickbroker to sell. It's often worthwhile selling these directly through the company (about 1% comm).

Cheapest options for certificated dealing off the top of my head are Walker Cripps and the Share Centre. Both are around 1% plus a few £ of add-ons.
