Not sure this is really a handing issue but didn't know where else to post it.

I'm thinking about fitting four point harnesses in my Coupe but wonder if the headrest posts might be a little close together for them. Has anyone done this and got any views? I'm thinking that using the rear seat belt mounting points for the shoulder straps should work OK, and for the lap straps there are the standard outer one and either the seat mount or a hole drilled through the tunnel with a strengthening plate should be OK. Just a bit worried about angles through the headrest.

Thoughts and ideally experience would be really appreciated.

Ideally a better seat for them would be used, but that may have to come later!

I use 3 point harnesses when I go to spa and I use the rear seat belt mounting point on the parcel shelf for the top belt and the 2 rear front seat mounting points for the lap belt and it works well , No problem with feeding the belts threw the headrest and they don't touch my neck just hold your shoulders in .

Thanks Nismo, interesting thought about 3 point belts and mounting that way - good to know that works through the standard seat. As I'm using my car for hillclimbing I would rather use 4 point belts (5 would be even better but pretty complex to fit I think). Also contemplating upgrading the seats though.

For the 4 point harness in mine, I've used the rear seatbelt points for the shoulder straps, the 2 for the lap is bolted into the existing seatbelt rail and drilled a hole with a plate for the other side.

Thanks Begbie - do you mean the lower mounts for the rear seat belts? Also, are you still on standard seats? Sorry for so many questions, it seems to be a bit of a minefield once you start looking into 4 point harnesses!

standard belts are fine for spa , its just when your pushing it a bit more with more power you want to be held in .

I use a cg lock which slightly improves the standard belts.
It locks the lap belt to keep you in place and is very easy to fit and remove.

Oh, and Andy I have a three point harness kicking about you can have for a beer token or two.
I am pretty sure it won't be in date for an msa events though. Let me know.

Thanks Phil - date doesn't matter for me as I am in the roadgoing class so it is an allowable mod that doesn't need approval.

I've been doing a bit of reading up on fitting a harness to a car and I came across this line which got me thinking

"Worth bearing in mind that unless you have proper roll-over protection you don't want to be using fixed harnesses anyway, inertia belts would be safer in some incidents."

That is one of my thoughts Phil - worst case of a roll over and if you have full harnesses you have no way of getting your head out of the way of a roof collapsing towards you.

I keep thinking of getting a roll bar in the back though - I don't really want to hack the interior around as much as the full cage requires but hoop and back stays would be nice to have. Need to get a quote for one in suitable tubing.
