From the engine bay..........

Ok, perhaps we can see how random and obscure we can get. But first, here is a relatively easy one.

1. What's the engine ? (extra points for historical facts)
2. What's the car ?... Make, model and approx year range.

This car was mine for a few weeks..... but was too big for the garage, and rotten to the core.... sold for peanuts... cry

Ok well done To GrahamL and ARM !!

A DeLorean featured on Wheeler Dealers the other day (a repeat) and they got £20k for it. A £6 profit.

So, here is the next one. I would love to have it in my collection (noting that my collection is just in my imagination). We had one in the late 1970's, but not quite as good as this one.

Ok, hint time. On the right track with Jag but as you say, it's not in my price range. Think poor man's Jag....

Second one. ARM is on the right lines. It's a V6.... Second bank is hidden behind.

Wel, it's a 6, so either a GT6 or a TR6?

Yup, that would be my guess too. Not really familiar with the TR to be honest.

Spent many hours perching on the front wheel of a Spitfire, trying to balance the twin SU's...

About the only car I know with a bigger bonnet than the coupe!

Another trophy for PeteP there. It is indeed a Triumph GT6. The Coupe version of the Spitfire with the nice grunty straight six. Came close to getting one after the club chairman took me out in his concours one. Stunning. Still, you were talking £4k for a dog eared one, and you could get a nice Fiat Coupé for that...

So, any more guesses for number 2 ?

You can have a 1/2 point Jim. laugh

Yes it was TSSC. I was a member for a year while I tried to decide what car to get. The club put me in contact with the guy with a Concours GT6. It is the one pictured. He said it was worth £10,000. But that was in 2005ish.

It was a lovely car and it sounded more like a V8 than a 6. But it was extremely agricultural compared to modern cars. The suspension was somewhat rudimentary!!

In the end, the reliability and low price of the Coupe swung it.

Still points to be gained for picture 2. It is a Mazda.... but what...?

Pic 2 - I would guess at a 6 cylinder 323 or Mazda's Ford Probe, Coupe equivalent?

And the Gloucestershire Shield Trophy goes Brilly - well done Mark ! I think ARMs name has also been engraved on the trophy for his correct identification of Mazda. beer

Mazda 323F 2 litre V6. Not the obvious choice for a classic Coupe, but it was on my list as it had the all important V6 sound. Luckily, the 5 cylinder sounds good in its own way. The Ford probe was never a car I could fall in love with though.

Back in the 1990's there were a few magazine articles about Coupe comparisons as mentioned - like the Peugeot 406 Coupe, the 200SX, Corrado, Probe etc...made interesting reading at the time, especially as the Fiat came out rather well.

See you later, when I shall dig out some more exotica for your delectation and confusion.

Well Joe, you are on the right lines with the first one, but have a look at the cryptic clue...

Second one - count the manifold headers.....

Nice one Neil. And it's a special Volvo, in my book at least. Care to identify model and type?

How about this one (that I've just put a deposit down on)...

I've obscured the name otherwise too much of a give away. Points for car, engine type and year.

Ooooh! I had a feeling I might get a few interceptor responses... You're very close, but no dice I'm afraid. Although, that guess is about as hot as an interceptor idling on a summer's day in stop-start traffic...

Very close. It is a Jensen...

Here's a clue - it is almost identical to an interceptor in appearance, but was more sophisticated (and had a slightly longer wheelbase as a result)

Yep! Jensen FF Mk1.

The engine bay is slightly longer in the FF compared with the interceptor to accommodate the front axle and transfer box for the 4WD system.

My interceptor is currently minus an engine rolleyes

Here it is: a 1966 series 1 fulvia. Style over substance as the engines only 1,216 cc, making no more than a measily <80 bhp.

I can't really explain the attraction, but it's just got under my skin and I've been lusting after one for years.

I blame the Petrolicious videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UUbhmx0qK0

It's nowhere near as desirable as the 1.3 rally spec HF models, but think I prefer the earlier ones. Must be getting old. As Clarkson's said "it really is as pretty as the sun setting over Charlize Theron"

as you can see - needs a bit of work, but I liked the fact it's all original, never even repainted, and I want to keep the oily rag look so I'm not looking retrim or anything.

Fabulous car Cyborg and completely understandable. I'm completely lusting after the Zagato version with the desire having been there for a long time. Currently working hard on man maths to make it viable.

Evening Joe. It is Italian.... and a V6... but it ain't an Alfa.

PS, I'd LOVE a 75 V6. They were the first car to get me into V6 engines.

The first car to get me into Fiats, was the original Panda. My Uncle had one in blue, with the iconic 1000cc FIRE engine. Rev it 'till it screams !

As it is a Quad Cam engine, would it be a Fiat Dino?

Are there 3 Webers hiding under the air cleaner and would that be the Digiplex just visible in the bottom of the picture?

Thought it looked familiar as one of my mates has a Dino Coupe.

And my elder daughter's dream car is a Dino Spider.

Ok

A bit left field now. Two very normal cars from my youth. Who knows, maybe you had one too.

1. A Swede with a little Je ne sais quoi...

2. This engine should need no introduction...

Car and engine for both if you please laugh

Second one is a mini, a 1250 I think.

First one looks awfully like a Renault 16, but you say it's Swedish. Renault owns a lot of Volvo, so are we feeling Volvic, perhaps?

1. Mr Barnes is on the right track. There is some French in there. Care to narrow down your choice ?

2. Close, but not quite the car or the cc.

oh, oh, me, me... 1. a Volvo 340?

My Mum had one of these so it was the first car I used out on my own after I'd learnt to drive. Foot loose and fancy free at 18 but unfortunately minus the chick magnet. Co-incidentally I was reading a review about them the other day - didn't realise at the time how slated and hated they were. Pre-internet ignorance is bliss.

My one abiding memory is driving my Mum (and my little sister in the back) from Maidstone to Lewisham when halfway up Sidcup hill I hit an Austin Princess up the ar$e. It was turning right which I'd seen too late. It was just past the registry office which had a wedding going on. "Oh look a wedding - what a lovely bride" says Mum. The bride was indeed v. attractive I observed for slightly too long at which point I hit the brakes and ended up smacking it probably at no more than about 15mph. But it shoved it's back bumper right under it's rear wheels so it was going nowhere. Nor was the 1 miles tailback reported on the traffic news (the shame!).

Volvo - true to form had only minor cosmetic injuries - bonnet creased and bumper split, but amazingly radiator was fine. My pride took a lot longer to recover.

Quality !!!!

I love a good old Volvo story. Yes, it is a 340.... but extra points for the engine / spec....... any guesses?

I also crashed mine into the back of someone back in 1996 on the A487 to Aberystwyth. I was on the way back to college with the back seats down full of gear, bike, bong, tins of value beans, tie-dye, other clichés and a tv.

I round a corner in the dark, and these red lights appear in my peripheral vision. By the time I realised, it was too late. A car had pulled out in front of me. I was doing 50 - 60mph. Car in front was doing 20. I remember the sound of locked up breaks and screaming tyres, then a shunt.

The TV flew off the front seat into the dashboard. Various pot plants lost their compost, and I lost my fender-bender virginity.

Needless to say. His boot would no longer shut, (his car was now only 2 feet long) but the Volvo was ok, apart from the headlight wiper was constantly on.

Yes, they were crap cars, but they had character !
Both Mrs G and Me had a 340 each at the same time. Good memories. Both died the same year in Lancashire. Mine through rust at only 90,000 miles, hers through a catalogue of Friday afternoon car crapness.

Still points to be gained for number 2 !!

Well it's not a moggy minor because the engine points the wrong way. How about a Riley Elf? 998cc.

Correct cc this time, but not quite there. Clue: Princess Di had one.

I'm going to go for the 1.4 GLE?

Agree the car had character. I knew they had the renault engine but didn't realise they were assembled in holland. My mum's went on for about 20 years and I've just remembered that after I've left uni. it was even the "1st date with the Mrs" car some 25 years ago before I finally got a job and bought my own. Happy memories.

Yep, my first car. A 1.0L. No frills. You had to change to 1st to get up steep hills.

The joke was, it was stolen and used as a getaway car. Then torched on a remote hillside. cry

Not the 1.4, but the epic power of the 1.7GL !!!!

Same Renault engine as the Renault 19, 21 and others. It liked to eat distributors as I recall. Fuel economy was also pretty shocking. Felt pretty pokey compared to the 998cc metro.

I think I have one "old" car left to post....

Phew! Is that a pic if your old car?
I borrowed a new 75 td in that colour and someone feigned a spew at a junction when they saw it.
Some folk have no taste.
I only got 95 mph out of that car. I borrowed a 'new' Corsa 1.5 td and cracked the tonne in that. On a closed Welsh road.
That was a good engine in its day.

Aha,

No, mine was faded red (pink). Still loved it though. Similar to the NA Coupe, once you got to 4,500rpm the engine came alive.

I loved the old Corsa 1.5Td. It was an Isuzu engine I think. My dad had a series of them.
