A really old mini SIM card in a really old phone - no signal problems at all.

A new micro SIM card in the above old phone (by putting it back into the mini SIM size plastic surround that you push it out of to make it a micro SIM) - the signal permanently drops after a couple of hours, so you have to turn the phone off and on again.

click to enlarge Basically, imagine in this picture, pushing out the micro SIM and then putting it back into place in the mini SIM size plastic bit that originally surrounded it. So in essence, it's like putting a micro SIM into an adapter to make it a mini SIM, right? confused

Has anyone else experienced problems when using a micro SIM (whatever way they may have used it - either like the above or in a proper adapter) in an old phone?

It's not like the SIM card is moving. Once I place it into the SIM slot, there is a clip that partially goes over it, thus holding it in place, and then of course the battery goes on top, therefore totally keeping it in place.

One thing though - the micro SIM is from a phone that I dropped, resulting in the screen getting damaged (so quite an impact) - could it somehow have damaged the SIM card? confused

I did this for the other half's iPhone a while back after the screen broke. I did have to use a little tape to hold the two bits in place, but it worked just fine.

The only issue i ever had was some newish sims would not work at all in an old phone i believe thats due to not 3g compatible?

Possibly the phone does not have the ability to switch to the different signals 2g 3g 4g so looses its signal and needs a reboot to find it again
Is it a pre 3g phone?

Of course! That's it! It's GSM.

Time for a new phone.

Just a few more things...

All new SIMs are now 3G enabled aren't they?

So if I was to put a new micro SIM into a newish GSM only phone, would that have the same problem?

Or would it be able to stay locked onto the 2G signal and if it lost it, just be able to recognise the incompatible 3G signal, ignore it, then find a 2G signal again, without needing to restart it? As after all, it would be a post 3G phone?

confused

I suspect trial and error is the only way you'll find out for sure...
