Mods can we sticky this? Cheers

Thought it would be good to have a list of times and specs for everyone to see.

This thread is basically just going to be for your ET (elapsed time; how quick your car gets down the 1/4 in seconds), your trap speed (the speed in mph you crossed the 1/4 mile marker), your user name, and finally your brief spec of your car(no essays needed just a few details, one sentence should do) you could also include which dragstrip you achieved this time at.

There will be a seperate discussion thread running alongside this for comments etc, but if we could keep this just for the above details.

When updating the list please insert your time appropriately where it belongs from faster times at the top, slower at the bottom.

Mmm I'm going to have a go at that. Just got to sort out how to do it in France.

What's the best way to set off.

At the moment at hill climbs I break traction when boost hits in from standing start.

Toyo 888s all round. Helix organic clutch.

Its a fine line between bogging down and breaking traction. The more power and more boost you have, the harder it is to get the balance right.

For me, bogging down is a complete pain, as you either have to wait for the turbo to spool up again, or you have to dip the clutch to pick the revs up.

I tend towards the opposite end - give me some wheelspin, which I then manage with the throttle.

From memory (its a long time since I did a full-bore launch and the result was lots of gearbox internals all over the track....) my technique is as follows:-

1) Warm the tyres as best you can - you'll have to remove any mechanical sympathy - pull the handbrake on HARD, dial in lots of revs and dump the clutch. The front wheels will spin up instantly and then its just a case of holding the revs high enough to keep the wheels spinning until you see LOTS of smoke

2) Stage

3) Dial in 4-5k rpm and drop the clutch quite hard whilst at the same time increasing the throttle (to avoid the engine bogging down)

4) The car will launch pretty hard, but wheelspin will be imminent. As soon as the wheels start to spin up, feather the throttle back slightly (but don't lift off, otherwise the turbo will stall and you'll be off-boost when you come back on the throttle)

5) as soon as the wheels have stopped spinning, use full throttle again all the way to the lights, with only the slightest lift of the throttle between gears in order to keep the turbo spinning

Its definitely a case of trial and error and knowing the boost characteristics of the car, but if you persevere, you'll find the right way of getting it off the line.

As a yardstick, you should look at your 60-foot times, as this is the best measure of the launch (everything after that is down to power and gearchange times). A decent 60-foot time in a Coupe is under 2.5 seconds. An epic launch is two seconds and anything under 2 seconds is either a fluke, or involves some very sticky tyres and a treated surface.

Bear in mind that sticky tyres and a treated surface is NOT good for a Coupe gearbox - I destroyed the planet gears in my diff, which then got jammed up between the crown wheel and the casing, and punched a big hole in the casing

Thanks Nigel.
I need to remind myself that the hill climbs are only demo/historic and non chrono.
I have had good launches and mediocre ones.
Track days are no problems.

Still loving taking the coupe on track and the attention it gets.

In that case, save your clutch and gearbox - do a "granny start" and then floor it when rolling

one year, at Ten of the Best, I did one of my best quarter mile times at the start of a top speed run - I did a really gentle start, but ended up with a very respectable time and a high terminal speed - go figure....

Yup - thinking of doing a trackday or two this year and it certainly won't be treated gently....
