Are the shortened number plates legal?

Say for example you have A1 ABC as your numberplate, can you have a shortened numberplate that shows the letters with the correct spacing but just have no space before the 1st A and the C

Like this

Normal
------------
! A1 ABC !
------------

Shortened
----------
!A1 ABC!
----------

Hope this makes sense..!

This is just a query, don't think I would ever go to the hassle of getting new plates made up, but have seen a few people with them...just wondered..

I don’t think the plate would be legal. I believe there has to be a set distance between letters.

Then again a lot of people do it anyway. Depends how friendly the Police are around your area!

I think there's also a set size for the plate itself.

IIRC there is a minimum spacing around the outer edge of the letters (11mm?) on mine I have trimmed it down to much less (7mm? 5mm?), and being as it's C1UPE it's not very long either, although all the spacing is legal. That's with the old style font, new font would be shorter still.

Trimmed tight like that it fits better on the front bumper and doesn't hardly block the air intakes

You can get a numberplate called a short standard, I only have 1 number in my plate and have looked into and they a perfectly legal, just not many places sell them, think they are actually quite a smaller than normal too.

All number plates can (offically) only be made by a company/person who has the DVLA licience to do so. This can cost around £5000+ per annum. With this agreement come a contract stating you WILL only make legal plates.

Only after you have completed this contract can you apply for the laptop and machine to make then. the loop hole are people who make 'show plates'

You will have to sign a disclaimer saying you WONT use them on the road and if you do that is down to you.

So to answer your question... your plate will be illegal if you use it on the road....

I think the regulations are a bit more forgiving for pre 50 / 51 series (ie up to 'Y' Reg).
Your desires might still be illegal though !!
Pop in a (number plate)shop.... ask to read through their regs book ??

The standard short plate is about 6 inches shorter than the normal size.
My local Ford dealer makes them up, he has an official DVLA plate guide up behind the counter with all the plates that are legal shown.
Downside is that he is pretty pricey.
I also found a site that does short standard as well for a very decent price so I will be getting a smaller front plate for my coop.
My friend has a short standard plate on his car and actually went to the police station to ask if it was legal and they told him it was OK after checking it.
I can find out for you how much they would be if you like.

Well its just a standard plate, trimmed down with a hacksaw and smoothed so it looks perfect, even close up. The spacing hasn't changed at all, to be honest this annoys me when people do that.

Looks a lot neater IMHO.

The stretch of road outside the old Rover works the police are always there on a friday with the vans that read your plate & tax disc. Iv had no problems with it. Even a copper said iv a nice car once and he was standing at the front of the car & didnt mention the number plate.

I was ok with mine for about 6 months, until one night when the police were bored and decided to give me a bollocking for it.

The cops are mostly fine about it. You'll need a proper plate to pass the MOT though.

I got a small number plate made up for the front of my first Coupe and the police were always pulling me over for it,i think the plate may have been a little on the small side though

Clicky

I cant see a problem with trimming the outside of a standard size plate though

From the DVLA website I would say the smallest you could go would be 79mm in height - 11mm + 79mm + 11mm

11mm is spacing 79mm letter height.

Width would be 338mm - 11mm 50mm(A) 11mm 50mm(1) 33mm 50mm(A) 11mm 50mm(B) 11mm 50mm(C) 11mm

11mm is spacing, 50mm letter width (1 would be less), 33mm group space.

I got my plate trimmed height wise but not length and am fairly sure the above was on the right side of the law.

Facyplates.com trim to any size. Just use legal font!!

Well if you have a number that's shorter than usual, eg A1 ABC, then the DVLA regs only state that you have to have a margin around the letters - doesn't say anything about plate size unless I missed that? So a shorter number could have a shorter plate and still be legal - if you space it correctly.

My plate is C8PPO, and I had it made with the gap between the 8 and the P being half the normal gap, i.e. 16mm instead of 33 mm. The gap between the other chars is 11mm, so it's all quite closely spaced. Haven't had a problem on the road yet, but they wouldn't MOT it until I paid for a "proper" set of plates

No it was normal size. It had incorrect spacing.

One of the numbers 'may' have been misrepresented slightly too.

The BS that numberplates have to adhere to, does not (I think) specify that they should have a black border around it - just that the border should be 'non reflective'. Could get away with dull yellow perhaps?.

Paint the back of the car yellow, buy a myriad of black numbers and letters and stick them all over the place. In amongst them put a 'legal' plate.

Now that would confuse the hell out of the ANR detectors, and be totally legal !!!.
You may spend half your life being pulled over though !!!

Dave agreed re Wightmans plate

Ive got the same size on the front as Wightman - and full size on the rear. In 3 years ive had 2 letters sent threatning that the DVLA would pull the plate from me if I continued etc.

I ve been pulled over twice in 2 weeks during the 3 years, got a £30 fine and second cooper told me to get an mot stamp on a document he gave me.

Ive stayed with the plate however ( Im stubborn ) Ive attached velcro to the back of the plate and if I get pulled again Ive got the full size in the boot and will say Ive just come from a car show/ meet or something and will immediately change over.

That plate is not going to be good for your rad - and if you decide on FMIC in the future will be bad for that too.

Why make life a hassle.. just use a standard plate with standard lettering and buy a nice private number to go on it e.g. FCC 123
